Eleanor Petersen Nelson, 86 C. Eleanor Petersen Nelson, 86, of Edina, Minn., and formerly of Hudson, died at her home, Thursday, Aug. 28, after a short illness. She was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Dec. 25, 1916, the daughter of J. Harry and Bertha Estella (Newson) Flett, and attended River Bend School for Girls in Winnipeg. She graduated in 1939 from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, where she was a top athlete and lettered in numerous sports. On Nov. 18, 1939, in Winnipeg, she was married to Wendell Alfred Petersen. As newlyweds they moved to Hudson, her husband’s hometown, where he was an attorney. While in Hudson she was active in many organizations. She was president of the Hudson Women’s Club, president of the Hudson Hospital Auxiliary and served as chairman of the annual SnoBall. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the PEO Sisterhood, Chapter BJ. After the death of her husband, Wendell Petersen, in 1956, she continued to make Hudson her home. In 1961, at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, she was married to A. Herbert Nelson, a former Minnesota insurance commissioner and later president of Lutheran Brotherhood Insurance Co., in Minneapolis. In Minneapolis, she was active in the Minneapolis Woman’s Club for more than 20 years and the American-Swedish Institute. When the King of Sweden, Carl XVI Gustaf, made a two-day stay in Minneapolis, Mrs. Nelson was chairman in charge of decorations for the royal welcome at the Minneapolis Auditorium. She also was a past president of the St. Croix Yacht Club auxiliary. Preceding her in death, besides her parents and two husbands, Wendell Petersen and Herbert Nelson, were a brother, Harry J. Flett and two grandchildren, Scott Ellingson and Deborah (Foulke) Waldbillig. Survivors are two sons, Wendell A. Petersen Jr. of Lake Elmo, Minn., and A. Herbert “Skip” Nelson of Edina, Minn.; a daughter, Catherine (Dale) Feste of Minnetonka, Minn.; two stepdaughters, Patricia (Robert) Foulke of Lake George, N.Y., and Judy (David) Ellingson of Eden Prairie, Minn.; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. Burial will be in Willow River Cemetery in Hudson. Memorials may be directed to the Woman’s Club of Minneapolis or Mount Olivet Church.
