Baker, 89 Merle Hazel Baker, 89, of Baldwin, and formerly of Hudson, died Sunday, Aug. 31, at the Park View Home in Woodville where she had resided since 1997. She was born in the town of Emerald, St. Croix County, April 19, 1914, the daughter of Herman and Minnie (Heinen) TeBeest, and graduated from Baldwin High School. On June 10, 1960, she was married at the First Reformed Church in Baldwin to Arch Joiner Baker of Hudson. The couple lived in Hudson until moving to Baldwin in 1961. As a member of First Reformed Church, she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Ladies Aid and Friendly Class. For many years she was a clerk in the Eggen Supermarket in Baldwin and was a member of the Happy Homemakers Club. Among her many accomplishments, she was fluent in the Dutch language. She loved to sew, bake and garden, but most of all she loved people. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Arch, in 2001, and a brother, Orien. Surviving are her sister, Arlene Wernlund of Baldwin; two sisters-in-law, Rose (James) Schug of Baldwin and Charlotte Baker of Iowa; and a brother-in-law, Williard Vrieze of Baldwin. The funeral service was at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, at the First Reformed Church in Baldwin with Pastor Leon Draayer officiating. Music for the service was provided by vocalist Brenda Lokker accompanied by Jule Hudson. The visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at the Bakken-Young Funeral Home in Baldwin and also one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial was in the Baldwin Cemetery where Francis Dees, Kenneth Klanderman, Melvin VanderMeer, Jerry Pederstuen and Don Kahler were pallbearers.
