Newgard, 72 Gerald “Jerry” Ove Merton Newgard, 72, of Hudson died Saturday, Aug. 30, at Hudson Hospital. He was born June 9, 1931, in Steel County, Minn., the son of Ove Merton and Gilma Elizabeth (Strand) Newgard, and attended school in Ellendale, Minn. As a young man he worked in the gold mines of the Black Hills of South Dakota and owned and operated his own Standard Gas Station. On May 1, 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict. In 1951 he was married to Bonnie Olson, and they were later divorced. After he moved to the Twin Cities in 1951 he found employment in the automotive industry. He worked for Downtown Chrysler, was sales manager for Brambilla Motors, then at Hopkins Dodge, Coon Rapids Chrysler/Plymouth and Hancord Pontiac. He was married to Ann Maunu in 1961. During the 1990s he owned Twin City Salad and Produce, and Bloodstalk Breeding in Geneva, Minn. Most recently he had worked for his son, Scott, at Star Renovators Inc. of Hudson. He was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed Minnesota sports, especially the Vikings. He also liked reading mystery and western novels and cooking. He claimed his 12 years of sobriety was one of his greatest accomplishment of life. Surviving are his six children, Betty (Mike) Huerd and Debbie (Mark Chapman) Newgard, both of Williams, Minn., Ron Newgard of Eden Prairie, Minn., Kathy Ericksen of Bloomington, Minn., Jerry (Pennie) Newgard of Warroad, Minn., and Scott (Elizabeth) Newgard of Hudson; two sisters, Caroline (Herb) Sorenson of Albert Lea, Minn., and Donna (Ed) Gaul of Owatonna, Minn.; two brothers, Dave (Bev) Newgard of Geneva, Minn., and Chuck (Nancy) Newgard of Owatonna; 12 grandchildren, Nicole Gustafson, Jolynn Ericksen, Tiffany Ericksen, Jennifer Newgard, Amber Newgard, Katie Newgard, John Huerd, Casey Huerd, Stephanie Spina, Shauna Newgard, David Newgard and Hailey Newgard; and four great-grandchildren, Katrina Brown, Isabella Brown, Gabrielle Gustafson and Jada Lilleboe. The funeral was at 11 a.m. Sept. 4 at Mount Zion Lutheran Church in Hudson with Pastor Keith Lueneburg officiating and organist Susie Lueneburg accompanying congregational singing. The visitation was one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial, with full military honors, was at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Memorials are preferred.
