Matthew was born Feb. 3, 1980, the son of Carl and Rosanne (Walhaug) Erickson in Ames, Iowa. He attended school in Hudson thru his sophomore year of high school when he moved with his family to Deer Park, and completed high school graduating with New Richmond High Class of 1998. While in Hudson he was a member of the golf, soccer and varsity hockey teams, was confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church, Hudson. While in New Richmond he was a member of the varsity golf, hockey and football teams, was selected as student of the month during his junior year and graduated in the top 1/4 of his class. Matthew was selected and played on the Wisconsin Select Hockey team in 1996, 1997 and 1998. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church of New Richmond. He had a passion for golf and was a member of the Krooked Kreek golf club in Osceola. He also loved to read, being on the computer, enjoyed outdoors, hunting, fishing, 4-wheeling, snowmobiling and spending time with his family at the lake home up in northern Minnesota. He had attended WITC for the Programmer Analyst/Tool and Die programs, and was currently attending Century College for Engineering. He was employed by the Polaris Co. as a quality control engineer. Matthew is survived by his loving parents, Carl and Rosanne of Deer Park; brother, Philip who is currently serving in the U.S. Army in Iraq; grandmothers, Betty Erickson of St. Paul, Louella Walhaug of International Falls, Minn.; his godparents, aunt and uncle, Shelly (Terry) Anderson of Bemidji, Minn., uncles, Roy (Patty) Erickson of Roseville, Minn., Paul (Linda) Erickson of Bellevue, Neb., Mark (Debbie) Erickson of White Bear Lake, Minn., and aunt, Denette Erickson of White Bear Lake, Minn. and by many great aunts and uncles, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Lawrence Erickson, Lloyd Walhaug and his uncle John L. Erickson. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20 at the First Lutheran Church of New Richmond with the Pastor Larry Jorstad officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19 in the O’Connell Family Funeral Home, Hudson. Interment will be in the Lakeview Cemetery, Aitkin, Minn. Memorials are preferred. Matthew is able to continue living through his gift of organ donation, especially his big heart.
