Hunter, 87 Harold J. Hunter, 86, a prominent Roberts dairy farmer, died in his sleep at his home, Monday, Sept. 1. He was a lifelong dairy farmer in the town of Kinnickinnic on the farm property purchased in 1853 by his German immigrant grandfather, Christian Bonnes (1827-1900). He was born April 18, 1916, to James and Gertrude (Bonnes) Hunter. After he graduated from Hudson High School in 1932, he began farming with his father. In 1947, in St. Paul, he was married to Vivian Braem. During the 1940s and 1950s, he played saxophone with a popular area dance band called the Harold Hunter Orchestra and later the Blackhawks. He served a total of 27 years on three different school boards, the Oak Valley country school, Roberts and St. Croix Central. He was elected to the St. Croix Central board for 18 years, including the last 10 as president, stepping down in 1986. He also served for several years on the River Falls Creamery Board. The Hunter farm centered on registered Milking Shorthorn cattle. He was president of the Wisconsin Milking Shorthorn Association for eight years and a member of the state and national associations for more than half a century. Additionally, he served for many years on the board of the St. Croix Farm Bureau. He retired from milking cows at the age of 75. He and his wife, Vivian, were recognized this year at the Wisconsin State Fair in West Allis for owning a 150-year old farm. Surviving are his wife, Vivian of Roberts; a son, James C. Hunter of Chico, Calif.; and a daughter, Kathleen Louise “Kathy” Hunter of Hudson; also surviving is his sister, Helen Haugen of St. Paul; and seven nieces and nephews. Services are at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at Ezekiel Lutheran Church in River Falls, with burial in the German Settlement Cemetery in the town of Troy.
