Steffen, 70 Mary L. Steffen, 70, of Osceola died of cancer Wednesday, Aug. 27, at the Osceola Medical Center. She was born Aug. 15, 1933, in Ellsworth, the daughter of Frank and Leone Murphy. In 1955 she received a bachelor of science degree in physical education and biology at River Falls State Teachers College (now University of Wisconsin-River Falls). She taught school in both Sparta and St. Croix Falls. On Aug. 8, 1959, she was married to Philip Steffen and they settled eventually in Osceola to raise their family. She was a constant figure in the Osceola community as a substitue teacher, coach and athletics booster at Osceola High School until retirement last year and touched many lives during her 24 years there. She was active in her church as a lector, was previously an avid bowler and golfer and was a dedicated Twins and Vikings fan. She also enjoyed working in her yard and having coffee with her friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, and a brother, Robert (Connie) Murphy of Lone Rock. Survivors are her husband, Philip of Osceola; three daughters, Jane (Arvid) Maki of Osceola, Catherine (Greg) Brunsell of Madison and Nancy (Jeff) Craft of Ham Lake, Minn.; a son, Daniel P. (Heather) Steffen of Hudson; seven grandchildren, Carl, Derek, Justin, Alec, Mickenzie, Spencer, and Delaney; a brother, James (Joanne) Murphy of Stevensville, Mich.; and a sister, Rita J. (Ronald J.) Skone of Osceola. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Osceola with Fr. Dan Dahlberg officiating. A visitation was at the church from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29.
