Burtis, 70 James “Jim” Henry Burtis, 70, of North Hudson died unexpectedly Sunday morning, Aug. 24, at Hudson Hospital, where he had been taken by ambulance. He was born Oct. 28, 1932, in Mount Vernon, N.Y., the son of James Hoyt and Helen (Merkel) Burtis. He attended grade school in New York and Chicago before graduating from Evanston (Ill.) High School. He furthered his education at Northwestern University in Evanston, where he received a bachelor’s degree in business administration. On Sept. 20, 1958, he was married to Carol G. Grund in St. Louis, Mo. They were later divorced, in 1985. He began his career with Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (3M) in St. Louis and worked for the firm for 36 years until retiring in 1991. His marriage to Beverly (O’Brien) Costello took place Aug. 6, 1988, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Hudson. They lived in Jacksonville, Fla., for some years before returning to Hudson in 2002. His sense of humor and positive outlook on life were well known to his family and friends. He enjoyed good cooking, watching football on television and was a Civil War buff. Surviving are his wife, Beverly; two daughters, Carolyn (Mitchell) Greunke of North Hudson and Amy (Bob) Schlichenmaier of Woodbury, Minn.; a son, John A. (Ann R.) Burtis of Woodbury; four stepchildren, William (Vivian) Smith of Oak Brook, Ill., Teresa (James) Dickman of Hudson, James (Lori) Costello of Tomah, and Tom (Pam) Costello of Becker, Minn.; a sister, Marjorie (Carl) Weiss of New Berlin; six grandchildren, Brittany, Kristin and Jacob Greunke, Dillon Granholm, Kaycie Schlichenmaier and Jack Henry Burtis; eight step grandchildren, Craig Smith, Colleen Krohn, Brian Dickman, Gary and Stacey Mitchell, Lindsay, Tanner and Hunter Costello. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hudson with Pastor Mark Tewes officiating. Burial was in St. Patrick’s Cemetery where casketbearers were Mitch Greunke, Bob Schlichenmaier, Jeff Weiss, Jim Dickman, Brian Dickman and Jason Krohn. Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
