As a young woman, she worked at the original Malted Milk Shop in Hudson and as a secretary for Dr. Kenneth L. Brandt. Through her mother, she was a descendant of Dr. Philip Aldrich (1792-1858), one of the first pioneers in what is now Hudson. He arrived here as early as 1847 when Wisconsin was still a territory. He served on the first county board, was Hudson’s first postmaster and the first probate judge of this district of Wisconsin Territory. A resident of Marquette since 1963, she worked for many years as a desk clerk at the former Northland Hotel (Landmark Inn) in Marquette. She was married Aug. 2, 1969, to Frank J. Tonella in Marquette and together they owned Tonella’s Funeral Home, where she assisted her husband until they both retired in 1986. She received much enjoyment from the friends and camaraderie she received at cardiac rehab at Marquette General Hospital, where she volunteered for 10 years. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. Surviving are one son, Frederick (Nancy) Evenson of Holt, Mich.; two daughters, Karen Johnson of Brandon, Fla., and Margaret “Peggy” Finger of Marquette; seven grandchildren, Scott (Jennifer) Johnson, Pam Johnson, Heidi Evenson, Daniel (Cathy) Evenson, Travis Evenson, Erin (Jim) Bowen and Jeff Finger; four great-grandsons, Jacob, Isaac, Matthew and Lukas; and an expected great-granddaughter, Grace; two sisters, Vycella Waxon and Olive (Leo) Crimmins, both of Hudson; and two brothers, Charles (Bev) Smith of Madison and Marlin (Meiko) Smith of Rockledge, Fla. Preceding her in death, besides her parents, were her husband, Frank Tonella, on April 18, 2001, and three sisters, Elwyn Waxon, Leora Mayer and Inez Boney. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, at Messiah Lutheran Church in Marquette with the Rev. Nancy Amacher officiating. Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, where pallbearers were Scott Johnson, Daniel Evenson, Travis Evenson, Jeff Finger, Jim Bowen and Larry Bergwall. © 2003 Hudson Star-Observer - Reposted by permission http://www.hudsonstarobserver.com/main.asp?Search=1&ArticleID=7962&SectionID=3&SubSectionID=54&S=1
