Zappa, Sr., 82 Ernie Lee Zappa, Sr., 82, of Rice Lake and formerly of Hudson, died Saturday, July 5 at Lakeview Medical Center in Rice Lake. He was born June 21, 1921, in Cumberland, the son of Angelo and Margaret (Moulett) Zappa. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. On April 15, 1944, he was married to Shirley Organ, who preceded him in death, March 16, 1978. He remarried on Aug. 2, 1980, Shirley Neely Howell, in Rice Lake. While living in Hudson, he was caretaker for many years of the homes of the Herman G. Erickson family. Surviving are his wife, Shirley Zappa of Rice Lake; a son, Ernest “Lee” (Betty) Zappa, Jr., of Clear Lake; two daughters, Gloria (Dan) Murray of Ladysmith and Susan Zappa of Hudson; a step-daughter, Andrea Howell of Milwaukee; three grandchildren; three brothers, Ralph and Charles Zappa, both of Cumberland and Richard Zappa of Brainerd, Minn., and four sisters, Angie Lauda and Lorraine Lasseigne, both of Riverside, Calif., Irene Haynes of Morton Grove, Ill., and Rose Bolin of Minneapolis. Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 9 at St. Anthony Abbot Catholic Church in Cumberland with Fr. Dennis Mullen officiating. Burial was in the St. Anthony Cemetery where pallbearers were Walt Organ, Jim Donatell, Jerry Organ, David Zappa, Jeff Zappa and Jerry Zappa. Graveside military rites were accorded by the Anderson-Thomson American Legion Post No. 98 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
