He completed in journeyman machinist apprentice in 1987 and was a member of the Machinists Union AFL-CIO Local 459. From 1960 to 1968 he was a member of the National Guard. He was a member of the ULLR Ski Club, served as its president 1991-92 and was named ULLR of the year in 1998 On Oct 11, 1968, he was married to Carol Juaire and they were later divorced. His second marriage on July 26, 1991 was to Dottie (Stebbins) Farrar. Preceding him in death were his parents. Surviving are his wife, Dottie and her three children, Cindy (Craig) Treptow of Lake City, Minn., Tammy (David) Willner of Caddo Mills, Texas, and Brett (Angela) Farrar of Rowlette City, Texas; the children of his first wife, Carol: Todd, Wayne and Bonnie Juaire; three brothers, Tom (Ann) Wald of Oakdale, Minn., Dave (Carol) Wald of Lake St. Croix Beach, Minn., and Frank Wald of Woodbury, Minn.; two sisters, Sally (Roy) Dick of Woodbury and Lou Ann (Mark) Minea of Cottage Grove, Minn., and eight grandchildren. The funeral service was at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 8 at Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Oakdale with Fr. Bill Marten officiating. David Lawrence Anderson, the son of Lawrence “Lars” and Harriet (Malberg) Anderson, was born in St. Paul Jan. 20, 1942 and died unexpectedly of a heart attack, Feb. 18, 2004, in Hudson. He was a graduate of Hudson High School in the class of 1960, and earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie . He taught industrial arts in Robbinsdale, Anoka and Brooklyn Park, all in Minnesota. Later he had a change in careers when he became a locomotive engineer for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad running a freight train from Minneapolis to Altoona and started his own construction company. Survivors are a son, Leif (Jean) Anderson of Beavercreek, Ohio; a brother, Daniel (Caroline) Anderson of Edwardsville, Ill., three grandchildren and a number of cousins in the area. She was born Feb. 11, 1917, in Herbert, Saskatchewan, Canada, the daughter of Patrick J. and Mary (Malley) Scoles and the granddaughter of Irish immigrants. Her mother died at a young age, and Geraldine was raised by an aunt in St. Paul. On June 27, 1940, in St. Paul, she was married to a young law student, Lawrence P. Gherty, a native of the Emerald-Erin Prairie area of St. Croix County. Her husband received his law degree in 1942 from the St. Paul College of Law, and then received an appointment as a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He served in Birmingham, Ala., New York City, Chicago and St. Paul. She and her husband came to Hudson in 1946 when he opened his practice of law which he continued until the time of his death, April 8, 1980. He also served as St. Croix County judge in the 1960s. His law practice is continued in the present firm of Gherty and Gherty, by his two sons, Terrence Gherty and Mark Gherty and daughter-in-law, Susan Schleif Gherty. Gerry Gherty was a widow for more than 10 years when she married Edward J. Quillin, Dec. 29, 1990, and moved to La Crosse. He died Oct. 15, 2002 and she returned to Hudson in Nov. 2003 to make her home at WinterGreen Apartments. Surviving are three sons, Lawrence P. (Eaine) Gherty Jr., of Woodbury, Minn., Terrence M. (Susan Schleif) Gherty and Mark J. (Maeta McKenzie) Gherty both of Hudson; four daughters, Barbara A. (Maurice) Moore of Eugene, Ore., Joan M. “Joni” (Douglas) Henningsen of Isle, Minn., Mary E. (Arthur R. Lehman) Gherty of New York, N.Y., and Maureen R. (Christopher) Tuggle of Ames, Iowa; three stepsons, Phil (Barbara) Quillin, Lyle (Sandy) Quillin and Larry (Barbara) Quillin, all of La Crosse; two sisters, Kathleen Kyle of St. Paul and Marian (Larry) Ruhde of Marshfield; a brother, Patrick J. Scoles of Maplewood, Minn. There are 16 grandchildren, Kelly (Julius) Butler, Dawn, Becky, Courtney, Katie, Michael, Collin, and Megan Gherty, David (Amy) Moore, Kevin Moore, Tod (Bridget) Henningsen, Charles Lehman, and Laurel, Hannah, Ben, Madison Tuggle and one great-grandchild, Nolan Butler. Preceding her in death, beside her parents and two husbands, are grandchildren, Christine Gherty in 1970, and Lawrence Gherty III in 1992 and a brother, Gordon Scoles. Mass of Christian Burial was at 11 a.m., Monday, July 12 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hudson, with Fr. John Parr officiating. Music was provided by three granddaughters, Laurel and Hannah Tuggle, as a harp and violin duo, a vocal soloist Katie Gherty and the Hope Choir. Burial was in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Hudson where casketbearers were Tod Henningsen, Michael Gherty, Collin Gherty, Charles Lehman, Ben Tuggle, and Phil, Lyle and Larry Quillin. Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m., Sunday, July 11, and from 9 to 10: 30 a.m., Monday July 12 at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson. He was born on March 28, 1920, in North Hudson, the son of John W. and Priscilla (Wright) Spencer. He was raised in the area and attended local schools, graduating from Hudson High School. On April 17, 1940, in St. Paul, he was married to Shirley Odell Zentzis. During World War II he was drafted into the United States Army and served in the Asiatic- Pacific Theatre of War with the 38th Infantry Division and was awarded the Asiatic Ribbon with one Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and the Combat Infantry Badge. For many years he was a fuel deliveryman for the Standard Oil Company and was known for his friendly service and upbeat attitude. After his retirement from Standard Oil, he worked for a time at B&L Liquor Store in Houlton and then Sutler's Wines and Spirits in Stillwater. He was a lifetime member of the Hudson Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No. 2115 and Disabled American Veterans. Survivors are his three sons, David J. (Lila) Spencer, and Michael J. Spencer (Diane Hathaway) both of Hudson, and Donald G. Spencer of Oakdale, Minn.; five grandchildren, Dawn Spencer of Hudson, Theresa Spencer of New Richmond, Lisa Spencer of St. Paul, Tammy (Edward) Payton of River Falls and Carrie (Brian) DeLoy of Star Prairie; six great-grandchildren, Travis Spencer, Bailey and Miranda LaFavor, Zachary Glassing, Garrett and Courtney DeLoy. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Shirley Spencer on Jan. 10, 2002; two brothers, Marion Franklin Spencer in 1993 and Virgil Leroy Spencer in 1975, and two sisters, Ruby Clayton in 2003 and Viola L. Linnerooth in 1981. A memorial service was at 3 p.m., Thursday, July 8 at the O' Connell Family Funeral Home of Hudson with Pastor Dr. Laurence R. Goebel officiating. His grandparents were the late Gust and Martha (Gregerson) Flattum of Hudson and Rueben and Vivian (Eaton) Larson of New Richmond. She was born June 17, 1939, in Spring Valley, the daughter of Henry and Myrtle Sorenson. She was a graduate of Spring Valley High School and the Miller School of Nursing. On Oct. 29, 1960, in Spring Valley, she was married to Leonard William Vanasse. She was a member of Milltown Lutheran Church and a former member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Hudson. Throughout her life, she was involved in many activities including teaching Sunday school, Republican Party committees, church functions, boating, camping and spending time with her family. Surviving are her two sons, Peter (Taxi) Vanasse of Hudson and Jason (Julie) Vanasse of Milltown; two daughters, Julie (Roy) Rose of Milltown and Amy Vanasse of Superior; eight grandchildren, Ryan, Michael and Alec Vanasse, Tiffany, Bethany, Brittany and Robert Rose and Logan Vanasse; four brothers, Rollin (Sue) Sorenson of Stillwater, Wayne (Marge) Sorenson of White Bear Lake, Minn., Jim (Marlene) Sorenson of Lakeville, Minn., and David Sorenson of Ellsworth; and two sisters, Arlene Nelson of Madison and Shirley Anderson of Hudson. Preceding her in death, were husband, Leonard Vanasse, in 2002; a son, Mark Vanasse; her parents, Henry and Myrtle Sorenson; and a sister, Donna Butts. Visitation was from 4 to 11 p.m. at Rowe Funeral Home Wednesday, June 30. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 1, at Milltown Lutheran Church in Milltown with Pastor Danny Wheeler officiating. Active pallbearers were Ryan and Michael Vanasse, Jim, Wayne and Rollin Sorenson and Dick Nelson. Born in McGrath, Minn., April 8, 1924, he was the oldest of the two sons of Emmett M. and Zoella (Christenson) Wicklander. He was a 13th generation descendant in the line of Samuel Fuller, the Pilgrim who came on the Mayflower, arriving in Plymouth, Mass., in 1620. Wicklander was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. He spent his early years in McGrath and came with his parents to Hudson as a teenager. After graduating from Hudson High School in 1941, he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943 and trained in Lincoln, Neb., and Yuma, Ariz., as a radio gunner. He served overseas in England with the 445th Bombardment Group in 12 combat operations over Germany. In 1945, while in England, he was awarded the Air Medal for Meritorious Achievement in Aerial Combat. On Sept. 20, 1944, at the parsonage of the First Baptist Church in Stillwater, he was married to Arlene Doris Johnson of Stillwater. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harris Johnson. He was in the construction and lumber business throughout his entire working career and was associated with the building firm of Benoy and Wicklander and later B&W Construction, Inc. After retiring from the construction business he was an outside salesman for Lambert Lumber Yard. For more than 50 years he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hudson, where he served as a deacon and trustee and was instrumental in the major restoration of the historic church building, that dates from 1866. He also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the Elks Lodge. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and spent many weekends at the family’s lake home. He enjoyed raising Arabian horses, loved gardening and was an excellent cook, famous for his Swedish pancakes. Surviving are his wife, Arlene, of Stillwater; two daughters, Patricia (Ronald) Kiderlen of Livingston, Mont., and Suzanne Laatsch of Hudson; four grandchildren, Emily Strong of Livingston, Mont., and Hailley, Michael and Mallory Laatsch of Hudson; a special niece and nephew, Judy Ruka of Oakdale, Minn., and Ronald A. Stohl of Hudson. Preceding him in death were his parents; and a brother, Dale Eugene Wicklander, in 1990. The family received condolences from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 5, at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Hudson. Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, at the First Baptist Church in Hudson with Pastor Randy Fredrikson officiating. At the service, organist Jody Branson accompanied vocalist Cheryl Forester. Private burial was in the Houlton Cemetery, where he was the fifth generation of his family to use the historic burying ground. Casketbearers were Michael Ryan Laatsch, Ronald Stohl, David Orf, Bob Ruke, Mike Laatsch, Steve O’Connell and Bob Lee. Full military honors were conducted by members of the Hudson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2115. Memorials may be directed to Lakeview Hospice in Stillwater, Minn., or First Baptist Church of Hudson. Visitation was at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.
