He was born Nov. 29, 1923, the son of Iver Herbert “Herb” and Ida (Lee) Ellefson, in Woodville. He attended the Bell Country School and graduated from Woodville High School in the class of 1943. On Oct. 23, 1965, he was married to Gladys Holt at Zion Lutheran Church in Woodville. They lived in Hammond for a few years until building a home in the town of Cady in 1985. He first worked at American Hoist in St. Paul and then went to work for the town of Cady and was employed there for 38 years until retirement. He loved bowling, fishing, traveling and volunteered at Park View Home in Woodville. Preceding him in death were his parents. Surviving are his wife, Gladys, of Wilson; two brothers, Curtis (Helen) Ellefson of Menomonie and Donald (Grace) Ellefson of Lakeland, Fla.; and a sister, Doris Vick of Duluth, Minn. Funeral services were Tuesday, Aug. 3, at Zion Lutheran Church in Woodville with the Rev. Keith Anderson officiating. Burial was in Lone Pine Cemetery in Woodville where honorary bearers were Murry Lestrud and Kenneth Dworschak. Active pallbearers were Cletus Wilson, Curtis Wilson, Larry Dworschak, Mark Ellefson, David Ellefson and Richard Ellefson. He was born June 13, 1911, in Somerset, the son of Ernest and Martha (Roettger) Ostendorf, and attended Landing Hill School in the town of Somerset. The oldest of four children, he helped his father cut wood to support the family and he and his father hauled the wood to Stillwater with a horse and wagon. In December of 1934 he was married to Lucille Ann Leisch, who died in 1952. He later married Marie Larsen on Aug. 16, 1958, in Denmark, Wis., and they made their home in Hudson. For many years he worked for the Burkhardt (Wis.) Co-operative as a driver and manager. Both he and his wife, Marie, retired in 1978. He was an enthusiastic baseball fan and in the 1940s and 1950s he played ball for the St. Croix County Tavern League. A memorable game in his baseball career occurred when he played against the famous Bud Grant, a Hall of Famer and Viking coach, and won! He also enjoyed hunting in the Danbury area, fishing for lake trout in Canada in May and playing cribbage, pinochle and bowling. Surviving are his wife, Marie; two sons, Richard H. “Dick” (Rose) Ostendorf of Hudson and Robert L. (Cindy) Ostendorf of North Hudson; two daughters, Donna Mae Seim and Geraldine Ann Waldroff, both of Hudson; 11 grandchildren Dale (Kris) Ostendorf, David (Chris) Ostendorf, Kristi Ostendorf, Vicki Ostendorf, Dennis (Jeanne) Ostendorf, Linda Jameson, Pat Cote, Lanette (Mike) Holland, Ruth Ann (Troy) Flaten, Nancy (Kevin) Frusher and Tara (Ilan) Boico; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Doris (Ralph) Sette of New Richmond. Preceding him in death besides his first wife, Lucille, in 1952 were his parents and two brothers, Raymond in 2002 and Wilbur. The funeral service was at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 6, at Christ Lutheran Church in Somerset with the Rev. Marilyn Thurber officiating. Music was provided by organist Kathy Brakke and vocalists Dennis and Mary Thorsen. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery in Somerset with grandchildren acting as casketbearers. A visitation was from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson and one hour prior to the service at church Friday. Memorials are preferred to the Burkhardt Redeemer Lutheran Church Land Fund. She was born Aug. 8, 1922, in Minneapolis, the daughter of Roy H. and Esther (Bergseng) Sakrison. Her father was a banker in both Deer Park and Bayport, Minn., and later a vice president, secretary and board member of the Andersen Corporation in Bayport. She graduated from Stillwater High School in 1940 and attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., for two years. On June 27, 1946, in People’s Congregational Church in Bayport, she was married to her high school sweetheart, Richard Atherton Reed. Her husband was a descendant of a warden at the Minnesota State Prison in Stillwater. During her residence in Hudson, she was employed as a teller at the First National Bank of Hudson for 11 years. She also was active in the affairs of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Hudson, singing in the choir and serving as longtime treasurer of the Episcopal Church Women and as a diocesan officer. She was a member of the Willow River Owls, Prairie Enthusiasts, St. Croix County Historical Society and the Phipps Center for the Arts. Besides her husband, Richard, she is survived by a son, Richard A. (Mary) Reed Jr, of Stillwater; and two daughters, Patricia (Robert) Angleson of Stillwater and Judith Reed of Lake St. Croix Beach, Minn. (Bob Angleson was a former mayor of Hudson in 1990-91); four grandchildren, Eric Reed of Minneapolis, Robert Reed of Reno, Nev., Matthew (Kristin Austrum) Angleson of St. Louis Park, Minn., and Stephanie Angleson of Mason City, Iowa; and a brother, John Gilbert Sakrison of Ballston Lake, N.Y. Preceding her in death were her parents, Roy and Esther Sakrison, and her sister, Patti Ann Sakrison. Private family burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Stillwater. A memorial service is pending in September. The family suggests memorials. She was born in St. Paul, June 25, 1911, the daughter of Harry and Clara (Sheeks) Hardenbrook, raised in St. Paul’s Eastside and graduated from Johnson High School in 1931. On Oct. 23, 1947, she married Elmer Schreiner. She and her husband continued to live on the Eastside where she was primarily a wife, mother and homemaker. When her husband retired from Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company in 1978, they moved to Deer Park. However, after her husband’s death, in 1987, she moved to Hudson to be with her son, Jim. While in Hudson, she volunteered at the Christian Community Home and her church. In 2002 she was named an “Outstanding Senior Citizen” finalist for St. Croix County. Surviving are her son, Jim, and wife Becky of the U.S. Air Force; two grandchildren, Timothy J. (Amy) Schreiner of Hudson and Christina (Kevin) Baker of River Falls; and a brother, Clinton Hardenbrook of Frederick, Md. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 9, at the United Methodist Church in Hudson with the Rev. Dr. Joan Goebel officiating. Music was provided by the Commitment Quartet accompanied by Jodell Krause and vocalist Adele Dolan. A visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, at Bakken-Young Funeral Home in Hudson. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Mahtomedi, Minn., with Timothy Schreiner, Amy Schreiner, Christina Baker, Jack Hardenbrook, Peter Post, Mary Post, Jeanette Plummer and Dave Naegeli as the pallbearers. Simon, 14, just recently moved to Colorado from Hammond with her mother and stepfather. At this year’s Hudson Relay, Simon said she hoped to be able to make the move with her family and to see where they would be living before she died. Simon’s health was clearly deteriorating at this year’s event, but with the help of her sisters, Angel and Jessica, she was able to light the torch that officially opened the 2004 Hudson Relay. She participated throughout the entire 18 hours of the event. Simon is survived by her father, Todd Simon, her mother, Bonnie, her stepfather and her sisters. Simon’s family will be bringing her back to Wisconsin for the funeral and burial. He was born Oct. 24, 1914, at Three Lakes in the town of Warren, St. Croix County, the son of Lester and Margaret (McGaughey) Greenfield. His paternal great-grandparents, James and Mary (Henry) Runions, County Derry, Ireland, homesteaded in the Three Lakes area in 1861 and were among the earliest pioneers in the town of Warren and St. Croix County. Their daughter, Margaret, with her husband, Clark Greenfield, expanded the family farm which William’s father and mother later operated. He received his eight years of elementary education in the Three Lakes one-room school and graduated from Roberts High School in 1934. In 1938 he married Irma Daily, the daughter of Guy and Pearl Daily. They operated the Consolidated Lumber Yard on Main Street in Roberts for several years prior to moving in 1941 to Portland, Ore., where William was involved in building material sales. Irma died in 1985 and he later married Garnet. William was a passionate and caring gentleman who deeply loved his family and friends. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was extremely proud of his Irish heritage. He never forgot his Wisconsin roots, and he and his family made many trips from Portland to visit relatives and friends in the area. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Irma; a son, Lt. Guy Greenfield, who was killed in the Vietnam War; a daughter, Margaret Ann Greenfield, who died April 16; his sisters, Betty Greenfield, Mary Schwalen and Imelda Madden; three brothers-in-law, Niles Westby, Bob Schwalen and James Madden. Survivors are his wife, Garnet; a daughter, Mary Kay (Ray) Page; a son, Kevin; a stepdaughter, Patti; a sister, Patricia Westby; and several grandchildren. Surviving in the Roberts area are cousins Richard and Don Greenfield and Dora Marie and Barbara Rohl. Memorial services for William and his daughter, Margaret Ann, were Thursday, July 8, at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Portland with Father Stephen E. Bossi, CSP, officiating. She was born in Oakland, Calif., Feb. 16, 1947, the daughter of Gene and Carol Paquette. She graduated from high school and nursing school in Superior. On July 22, 1967, in Superior, she married E. Frank Howenstine. The couple has lived in the area since the 1980s and she worked for Chiropractic Family Health Center in River Falls for 18 years. She was an active member of the Assembly of God Church in River Falls, enjoyed going on mission trips and loved to make greeting cards. Preceding her in death was her father, Gene. Surviving are her husband, E. Frank Howenstine; a daughter, Shelly Howenstine of Pullman, Wash.; her mother, Carol Paquette of Sartell, Minn.; and a sister-in-law, Kathy Prosecky of Superior. A memorial service was at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, at the Assembly of God Church in River Falls with the Rev. Mike Becktold officiating. A memorial visitation was Monday from 6-9 p.m. at the church. She was born in St. Paul, April 6, 1913, the daughter of Peter and Lucia (Meala) Idanza. She attended Lincoln Elementary, Cleveland High School and Rasmussen Business College, all in St. Paul. For several years she was employed in the payroll department of Seeger Refrigeration now the Whirlpool Corporation. On July 9, 1938, she was married to Fred F. Mangine in the St. Ambrose Parish in St. Paul. Recently they celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. During World War II, while her husband was in the U.S. Army, she was employed at the Twin Cities Arsenal plant in New Brighton, Minn. While living in St. Paul she was active in the Transfiguration Parish. She and her husband moved to Hudson in 1963 and spent more than 30 years at their home on Cove Road in the town of Troy before moving to the Mont Croix Apartments in Hudson. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and was known for her baking ability. She was the caregiver for her mother until she died in 1970 at the age of 94 years old. Surviving are her husband, Fred F. Mangine; a daughter, Consoline Lucille (James) Brugler of Hudson; a son, Frederick Joseph (Katherine) Mangine of Osceola; three grandchildren, James (Aimee) Brugler of New Richmond, Frederick P. (Jennie) Mangine of Somerset and Karrie (Joseph) Bruns of Mound, Minn.; six great-grandchildren, Alecia, Madeline, Emma and Joseph Brugler, Freddie and Bethanie Mangine; a brother-in-law, Albert (Adlyne) Mangine; and three sisters-in-law, Margaret Bielicki and Helen and Eleanor Mangine. Preceding her in death were her parents. Mass of Christian Burial was 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hudson with Fr. Peter Szleszinski officiating. Vocalist Michael Manders was accompanied by organist Christopher Hnasko. Visitation was from 9 a.m. until the hour of service. Burial was in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery. She was born Sept. 30, 1948, in the town of Cady, St. Croix County, the daughter of Hagner and Linda (Robole) Gunderson, was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Woodville. Presently she was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hammond. She attended Baldwin-Woodville School, graduating with the class of 1967. On March 23, 1968, she was married to Lamoine Roatch at Zion Lutheran Church in Woodville. Over the years, Jan worked a variety of jobs. She also continued her education by taking classes in accounting and business at Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College in New Richmond. While living in Ellsworth she worked at the Ben Franklin Store. A few years later, she and her husband moved to Hammond where Jan stayed at home and cared for the children. From 1979 until 1991 she was employed at Realty World Dowd Reliance in Baldwin doing secretarial work, and during the 1990s, she worked as an assistant closer for Minnesota Title, then as administrative manager at Heritage Title Company and Century 21, all in Hudson. Since 1998, she has worked for the Estreen and Ogland law firm in Hudson. She loved being with her family spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed her time at the lake/river, vacationing with her family and sisters, going for walks, shopping, golfing, camping and playing the organ. Preceding her in death was a nephew, Steven Serier, and her grandparents, Ole and Nana (Swenson) Gunderson and Eric and Clara (Holt) Robole. Survivors are her husband, Lamoine; a son, Troy (Jenny) Roatch of Campbellsport; a daughter, Wendy (Ben) Heinrich of Hammond; three grandchildren, Nicole Roatch, and Taylor and Peyton Heinrich; her parents, Hagner and Linda Gunderson of Hudson; three brothers, Lyle (Sonja) Gunderson of Baldwin, Auldin (Bonnie) Gunderson of Roberts and Dennis (Bonnie) Gunderson of Woodville; six sisters, Gloria (Frank) Schulte of Baldwin, Carolyn (Chuck) Serier of Woodville, Kathy (Brian) Lundquist of Lakeville, Minn., Kay (Arlyn) Pax of Menomonie, Amy (John) Betchwars of Hudson and Patty (Gary) Fern of Baldwin; two brothers-in-law, Wayne (Sharon) Roatch of Spring Valley and Richard Roatch of Elmwood; two sisters-in-law, Donna (Eugene) Andrle of River Falls and Mary Hines of Ellsworth. Visitation was Friday, July 30, from 4-8 p.m. at Keehr Funeral Home in Spring Valley. Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 31, at Zion Lutheran Church in Woodville with the Rev. Keith Anderson officiating. Special music was provided by organist Judy Albrightson and vocalist Amy Ballew. Private family burial will be at a later date in the Hammond Cemetery in Hammond. Barrett, 94 Wednesday, August 04, 2004 Helen F. Barrett, 94, formerly of Hudson and Downing, died Friday, July 30, at the Terrace View Living Center in Shell Lake. She was born April 1, 1910, in Chetek, the daughter of William and Laura (Hessel) Birkholz. She graduated from Rice Lake High School in 1928 and attended St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Rochester, Minn., were she graduated in 1931 as a registered nurse. On July 12, 1934, in Iowa she was married to Jean L. Barrett. They returned to the Rice Lake area where they lived until 1942 when they moved to Vancouver, Wash. In 1945 they came to Hudson, where they operated Barrett Printing Co., 422 Second St., until retiring in 1977 and moving to Downing. She remained in Downing until 1994 when she moved to West St. Paul. She was a registered nurse for 52 years and worked in a number of institutions including Hudson Memorial Hospital. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Jean L., in 1983; three sons, Roger F., Ronald J., and Robert M.; three sisters, Ann Birkholz, Agnes Kolf and Lorraine; and a brother, Arthur. She is survived by two sons, Jerry (Cindy) Barrett of Barronett and Richard (Lois) Barrett of Plum City; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mabel (Bill) Johnson of New Richmond, Clara (Randall) Peavey of Tacoma, and Billie (Anthony) Ingrassia of Arlington, Va.; and a brother, Fred (Ann) Birkholz of Albuquerque, N.M. Mass of Christian Burial was at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Boyceville with Father Jerry Hoeser as celebrant. Burial was in New Hope Cemetery in Osceola. She excelled at softball, pitching for the varsity, which she lettered in this spring. She enjoyed time with friends and family and also participated in snowboarding and quilting. As a lover of animals, she and had many pets: Gizmo, her guinea pig; Ali and Moe, her cats; Otis, the family dog; and her rabbit, Bunny. Preceding her in death was her grandfather, Donald Russell. Surviving are her parents, Mark and Teresa; a sister, Holly Sigler; a brother, Dean; grandparents Dean and Sylvia Bierbrauer, Kathryn Bierbrauer and Kenneth Youngdahl, and Patricia and Clifford Hilden; and godparents Dick and Marie Saltness. Funeral services were Wednesday, Aug. 4, at West Immanuel Lutheran church with the Rev. Rexford Brandt officiating. Music was provided by Diane Kammerud. Burial was in the West Immanuel Cemetery.
