He was born, Dec. 8, 1946, in Omaha, Neb., the son of General and Malinda (Lowell) Broadus. He was raised in Kansas City and attended high school and college there. In 1967, he enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He worked as a forklift operator for the Owens and Corning Fiberglass Corp. in the Twin Cities. On May 16, 1997, at the Assembly of God Church in River Falls, he was married to Sadie A. Curtis. He was an avid fisherman. Survivors are his wife, Sadie; a son, Damon Broadus of Kansas City; a stepson, Michael Curtis; and two brothers, Eugene Broadus of Kansas City and Kenneth Broadus of Fresno, Calif. The funeral service is at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27, at the Assembly of God Church in River Falls with Pastor Mike Brechtold officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. She taught English 1 and 2 and dramatics in Hudson High School from 1935 to 1939. While in Hudson she roomed at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Harding on Sixth Street. Helen Selle was born in Milwaukee, March 25, 1912, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Selle. She attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she earned a bachelor of science degree. At the university, she was a close friend of Dorothy Nagel of Hudson, the daughter of the late Emil and Mabel Nagel. She left Hudson to marry Paul Bay in Copenhagen, Denmark, Aug. 4, 1939, and remained there for the entire German occupation of Denmark during World War II. After the war, she and her small daughter returned to Milwaukee and she resumed teaching. She later married John Fairbairn. In 1986, at the prodding of family and friends, she wrote a memoir entitled “The King Grants Permission and other True Stories” that detailed her experiences in Denmark during the German occupation. She remained the rest of her life in Milwaukee where she taught grade and high school students. She returned to Hudson, June 15, 1993, to renew old acquaintances at a luncheon at the Hudson House where 40 of her former students and associates gathered to greet her. For the past few years, she has lived at the Milwaukee Protestant Home. She died Nov. 29, 2003, after a brief illness. Surviving are her daughter, Elizabeth (Charles) Miller of Fond du Lac; and two grandchildren, Erika and Christopher Miller. Preceding her in death were her parents and a brother, Carl Selle. A memorial service is planned. Memorials were suggested to St. Marcus Lutheran Church, 22215 N. Surviving are her husband, James; a daughter JoAnn (Wayne) McKenzie of Roberts; three grandchildren, Cheryl (Jeff) Olsen of Stillwater, Scott McKenzie of Portland, Ore., and, Jerry (Tamara) McKenzie of Houlton; five great-grandchildren, Meghan, Lauren and Ryan Olsen, Max, Kaitlyn and Rachel McKenzie; and two brothers Roger, (Cassie) Ronning and Al Ronning. Preceding her is death were a son, Thomas; her parents, Edward and Elizabeth Ronning; and two brothers, Mitchell and Grant Ronning. A funeral service was at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson. A visitation was from 6 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. She was devoted to volunteering for the Girl Scouts and Brownies and 4-H Club. She was an active member of the Congregational Church in Spring Valley and was recently a member of the Calvary Assembly of God Church at Wilson. She was an avid reader, loved to listen to music and visit family and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Lawrence, who died in July 2000; four brothers, Leslie, LeRoy, Floyd and Vern White; and two sisters, Alice Abbott and Lyla Dahlman. Survivors are a daughter, Judy (Roger) Johnson of Woodville; two granddaughters, Melissa (Allen) Steinhauer of Roberts and Roxanne (Anthony) Kopp of New Richmond; and two great- granddaughters, Lydia and Mia. Funeral services followed at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, at Calvary Assembly of God Church in Wilson with Rev. Rick Mannon officiating. Music was provided by organist Gail Lewis and vocalist John Terkelsen. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Woodville. He was born Jan. 19, 1942, in Baldwin, the son of Donald and Mae (Grotenhuis) DeYoung, and graduated from Baldwin High School with the class of 1960. On June 1, 1962, at the First Reformed Church in Baldwin, he was married to Janet Johnson. As a young man he worked as a parts manager for both the International Implement dealership in Baldwin and later for CIR Plumbing and Heating in River Falls. He started Chuck’s Recycling business in Baldwin by first picking up cardboard and aluminum cans, which soon evolved into a much larger operation. He collected recyclable material in adjacent counties and even from Stout University in Menomonie. He worked long hours, sometimes starting at 3 a.m., and not finishing until suppertime. He did enjoy the fresh vegetables from his garden and spending time camping at Moon Lake. He is survived by his wife, Janet; two sons, Duane (Michele) DeYoung of Woodville and Scott (Michelle) DeYoung of Cambridge, Iowa; three daughters, Cindy Kay (Christopher) Mansfield and Karen (Fred) Pesik, both of River Falls, and Nadine (Kevin) Skaare of Hudson; 13 grandchildren, Joshua and Abigail DeYoung, Ryan and Jacob Mansfield, Morgan, Cody, Jessica, Alexander and Sydney DeYoung, Lindsay and Hunter Pesik and Zachary and Andrew Skaare; his father, Donald DeYoung of Hammond; a sister, Doreen (Howard) Kruschke of Roberts; and a brother, James (Carol) DeYoung of New Richmond. Preceding him in death were his mother, Mae DeYoung; parents-in-law, Clarence and Edna (Kappers) Johnson; and a brother-in-law, Eldon (Ella) Johnson. The funeral service was at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 13, at Peace Lutheran Church in Baldwin with Pastor Dennis Nelson officiating. Organist was Jan Hanson, who accompanied singers Mike and John Murtha. He was born Jan. 23, 1936, in Hammond, the son of Merle B. and Florence (Wurzinger) Medes, and attended school in Hammond. As a young man, he enlisted in the United States Army. After his return from the military he was married to Margaret Ann Meistad in Gilmanton. The marriage would later end. He was employed for many years at Waldorf Paper Company in Minneapolis before entering the hardware business. He began his career with VandeBerg Hardware store in Baldwin and then with Gregerson’s Hardware, where he became the “go-to guy” for repairing broken screens, lawnmowers or bicycles. He retired in 1998 because of health reasons. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman and camper. Earlier in life, he enjoyed videotaping horse pulls and chatting on the citizens band radio where his handle was Red Fox. Surviving are three sons, Brian (Ericka) Medes of Austin, Minn., Keith (Tracy) Medes and Dean (Amy) Medes, both of Rochester, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Faith, Shawn, Denise, Brianna, Taylor, Devin, and Emily; two sisters, Anna Mae Hennessey of Osceola and Marlene Eggen of Hudson; three brothers, Clifford (Bev) Medes of Hammond, William (Jean) Medes of Denver, Colo., and Gerald Medes of Baldwin. Preceding him in death were his parents; and a brother, LeRoy Robert Medes, in 1967. The funeral is at 11a.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hammond with Pastor Michael Briggs officiating. She was born Aug. 29, 1935, in St. Paul, the daughter of Joseph and Naomi Ryan, and graduated from Monroe High School in 1953 and the University of Minnesota in 1955. On Feb 25, 1961, in St. Paul she was married to Donald G. Olson. In early 1969, the family moved to Hudson, when Donald Olson accepted a position with Erickson Foods. He held his post with the Erickson firm until his retirement in 1988, when the family moved to Florida. Nancy Olson was a longtime employee at Regions Hospital in St. Paul. After her move to Florida she continued to work in the medical field. She enjoyed reading, traveling, bowling and spending time with her grandchildren. Surviving are her husband, Donald Olson of Cape Coral; two daughters, Christine (John) Zorn of Stillwater and Karen Olson of Woodbury, Minn.; a son, Donald J. “DJ” Olson of Houlton; and two grandchildren, Joe and Liz Zorn. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, at the Simonet Funeral Home in Stillwater. She was born at Hudson Memorial Hospital Nov. 17, 1989, the daughter of Todd and Bonnie Simon. Fishing, swimming, drawing and being with her family were among her enjoyments. She was involved in 4-H, and graduated from the eighth grade at St. Croix Central Middle School in Hammond. She was the co-chairman of the 2003 Hudson Relay For Life, and earlier this year she lit the torch and participated in activities at the 2004 Hudson Relay. She is survived by her mother, Bonnie (Anderson) Munns (Mrs. Michael); her father, Todd (Audrey) Simon; two sisters, Angel and Jessica; and her grandparents. Memorials are preferred to Make-A-Wish Foundation of Wisconsin, 13195 W. Hampton Ave., Butler WI 53007. Funeral services were at 1 p.m. at Ezekiel Lutheran Church in River Falls on Monday, Aug. 16, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. He enjoyed hunting deer and bear, hanging out with his friends, and bon fires. Surviving are his parents, Ervin and Carla Symanietz of Roberts; a brother, Craig (Angie) Symanietz of Hammond; four sisters, Lisa Guffy of Hudson, Kris (Jon) Ottarson of River Falls, Jenny (Tim) Pedersen of Woodville and Meri (Travis) Most of Prescott; and 11 nieces and nephews. The funeral service was Friday, July 30, at St. Bridget Catholic Church in River Falls with Fr. Gerald Harris officiating. Burial was in St. Bridget Cemetery in River Falls with Eric Most, Dan LaVenture, Joe Fern, Zac Wittstock, Gavin Johnson and Jason Feyereisen serving as pallbearers.
