Anderson, 79 Friday, October 08, 2004 Laverne B. Anderson, 79, a lifelong farmer in the town of St. Joseph, died Thursday, Sept. 30, at his farm. He was born Feb. 23, 1925, at the family farm in Houlton, the son of John and Emma (Thelen) Anderson. He attended elementary school in the Houlton and walked everyday to the Stillwater High School from which he graduated in 1942. On June 14, 1949, he was married to Betty Ann Schafer in Bayport. The couple raised their five children on their Riverview Acres Farm in the town of St. Joseph. . He was a dedicated and successful farmer and collected both big and small antique tractors which he dutifully restored and kept in pristine condition. He was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 94 in Stillwater. Survivors are his wife, Betty; three sons, Kenneth J. (Colleen) Anderson of Plymouth, Minn.; James K. Anderson (fiancee Cathy Thoemke) and Donald A. (Gwen) Anderson, both of Hudson; two daughters, Karen Jean Huftel of Hudson and Kathleen Mary “Kathy” (Craig) Strom of Maplewood, Minn.; six grandchildren, Nicole (Paul) Lemmerman, Kristen Anderson, Kelly Jo Anderson, Brandon Huftel, Lisa Huftel and Alyssa Anderson; two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Connor Lemmerman; and a sister, Clarice Smith of New Richmond. Preceding him in death were his parents, John and Emma Anderson; and his sister, Geraldine Waldroff. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 4, at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson with Deacon Bernie Drevnick officiating. Music was provided by vocal soloist Deborah O’Keefe. Burial was in the Houlton Cemetery with nephews John Dulon, Bob Dulon, Joe Dulon, Tom Dulon, Dave Waldroff, Howard Smith and Dick Smith serving as casket bearers. David Dulon and Jim Schafer were honorary casketbearers. He was born May 28, 1949, in Baldwin, the son of Earl J. and Linda (Moline) Bates, and was raised there, attending Baldwin schools. In 1969, he enlisted in the U. S. Army and served in Vietnam in Southeast Asia, receiving the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars. He was discharged in Fort Lewis, Wash., in 1971. Upon his return from the Vietnam War, he was employed in the clothing industry as a sales clerk in the stores of Oscar Chillstrom and Wally TeGrotenhuis in Baldwin. He was a railroad buff and loved reading literature about the railroad and its history. He also enjoyed reading and following the career of one of his favorite movie stars, Elizabeth Taylor. Surviving are his father, Earl J. Bates of Hudson; two sisters, Theodora (James) Stone and Penelope (Bruce) Siegersma, both of Baldwin; two nephews, William BJ (Shelby) Denzer and Nicholas Siegersma; a niece, Janna Stone; and an uncle, Theodore G. (Violet) Moline of St. Peter, Minn. Preceding him in death was his mother, Linda Bates. The funeral service was at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Baldwin with Pastor Steven Rice officiating. Visitation was one hour prior to the service. Surviving are his wife, Geraldine, of Ellsworth; six children, Ronald Clingenpeel of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Debbie Blodgett of Hudson, Gordon (Shirley) Clingenpeel of West Salem, Paul Clingenpeel of Rice Lake, Dale (Diane) Clingenpeel of Holmen and Lorri (William) Mattes of Mason; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Verla Mae (Melvin) Boyens of Marion, Iowa. Preceding him in death were his parents; two sons, Richard and Glenn Jr.; a brother, Darrell; and two sisters, Genevieve and Nathalia. Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at the Hill Funeral Home in Ellsworth with the Rev. Harlen Menk officiating. He was born in St. Paul, Sept. 22, 1920, the son of Theodore S. Sr. and Dorothy Abbott, and attended schools in St. Paul. During World War II, from 1940 to 1946, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a tank commander in the Pacific Theater of War, participating in the battles of the Islands of Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa. He also participated in the occupation of Kyushu, Japan, and from there observed the effects of the dropping of the atom bomb on the city of Nagasaki. There he was awarded the Purple Heart medal. On May 18, 1946, he was married in Laguna Beach, Calif., to Maxine Dorothy (Schultz) Luse of Hudson, the daughter of Alfred R. and Helene (Burkhardt) Schultz, and the granddaughter of Christian Burkhardt, the founder of the village of Burkhardt. For two years, 1947 to 1949, he and Vernon Jensen owned and operated a sports business, St. Croix Sport and Marine, at 113 Walnut St., but after two years the business closed. He received a bachelor of science degree in 1951 from River Falls State Teachers College (now University of Wisconsin-River Falls) and did additional studies at the University of Arizona in Tucson. He taught junior high school in Hudson, and Prescott, Ariz., and was a guidance counselor at several middle schools in Madison. Later he was a substitute teacher at Minong Northwood High School. Surviving are three children, Judge Steven L. (Jean) Abbott of Sparta, Barbara (Richard) Deming of Brockport, N.Y., and Theodore S. Abbott III (special friend Connie Konrady) of Lake Worth, Fla.; five grandchildren, Barry (Nichole) Abbott of New London, Richard (Nancy) Deming of New Haven, Conn., Kathryn (Rob) Morgan of Andover, Mass., Jennifer (Ryan) Hawblitzel of Tampa, Fla., and Theodore (Julie) Abbott IV of Clearwater, Fla.; and one great-granddaughter, Jacqueline Deming of Andover, Mass. Preceding him in death were his parents; and his wife, Maxine, on Jan. 24, 1994. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Brown Funeral Home in Solon Springs. Burial will be in the Gordon Memorial Cemetery in Gordon. Brown, 77 Friday, October 01, 2004 Richard E. Brown, 77, of Menomonie died Friday, Sept. 24, at his home. He was born Dec. 9, 1926, in Menomonie, the son of Harvey and Rose (Kochendorfer) Brown. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was discharged in 1946. On Oct. 24, 1946, in Stillwater, he was married to Maxine Ziehme. They lived in the Hatchville area until returning to Menomonie in 1952. He was a cheese maker at Summit Cheese Factory in Wilson for several years and also worked at Twin City Milk Producers in Elmwood and Menomonie before working in the maintenance department at University of Wisconsin-Stout from 1966 until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Menomonie and the American Legion. He loved gardening, making wine, fishing, hunting, ice fishing and camping. After retirement, he and his wife liked traveling, especially to their favorite places, Branson, Mo., and the House on the Rock near Spring Green. Surviving are three daughters, Linda (Allen) McIntyre of Menomonie, Connie (Michael) Johnson of Hudson and Cindy (Jerry) Tape of Cottage Grove, Minn; five grandsons, Kevin (Jean) Jacobs and Kurt (Patricia) Jacobs, both of Menomonie, Scott Johnson of Hammond, Jason Johnson (fiancee Abby) of Hudson and Joshua Tape of Cottage Grove; four granddaughters, Kari Lange of Colfax, Shannon Johnson of New Richmond, Jenna and Kelsey Tape, both of Cottage Grove; two great-grandsons, Cody Jacobs of Menomonie and Dakotah Jacobs of Colfax; one great-granddaughter, Sydney Jacobs of Menomonie; two step-grandsons, Michael (Melva) McIntyre and Patrick (Carol) McIntyre, both of Wheeler; and two brothers, Harvey (Mary) Brown of Prescott and Harold Brown of Weatherford, Okla. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Maxine; two sisters, Janet Florence and Mary Foslid; and three brothers, Robert “Midge,” John and Ed. A Memorial Service was at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, at the United Methodist Church in Menomonie with the Rev. Rosalind Dryver-Scott officiating. Burial of his cremains was in Forest Hill Cemetery in Knapp with military honors provided by the Menomonie Veterans Honor Guard. She was born in Somerset, Feb. 18, 1913, the youngest daughter of Joseph and Eugenia (Francois) Plourde, and was the last of her immediate family. She graduated in 1932 from Somerset High School, where she took part in theater, was an award-winning vocalist and a class officer. She attended Superior State Teacher’s College in 1932-1933 and then Lee Beauty School in St. Paul from 1933 to 1934 to become a beautician. After graduation she began her career at the Chareze Salon and from 1935 to 1937 she worked at the Emporium Beauty Salon, both in St. Paul. She moved to Hudson in 1937and bought the Mae Becker Beauty Shop, at 503 Second St., and changed the name to La Vogue. She operated that shop and another in Shakopee, Minn., until 1943. On April 6, 1940, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Somerset, she was married to Flavian A. Gagnon. In 1949 she and her husband formed Gagnon Inc., and she was actively involved in the day-to-day operations of the business until 1985. From 1985 to 2000 she remained an officer and consultant to Gagnon Inc. She was active with local charities. She and some of her friends would meet weekly and sew clothes for leper missions. She was also an active member of the St. Patrick’s Parish Council of Catholic Women. Other enjoyments included knitting, cooking, traveling with her family, playing cards and spending a day on the golf course. She took pleasure in the big band era and ballroom dancing. Over the years she enjoyed collecting stamps and tending her meticulous gardens. Surviving are three children, Ronald J. (Martha) Gagnon, Mark Gagnon and Jean (Lawrence) Clausen, all of Hudson; eight grandchildren, Lisa (Erik) Sun of Walnut Creek, Calif., Peter (Deb) Gagnon of Hudson, Amy (Keith) Knoke of Hudson, Jacquie (Steve) Graham of New Richmond, Brian (Candee) Clausen of St. Paul, Michel (Matthew Tigan) Clausen of Hudson, Madeleine Gagnon of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., and Marquelle Gagnon of Hudson; 12 great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Claire, Patrick, Thomas, Nathan, Andrew, Abby, Melissa, Tony, Jennifer, Sam and Sophie. Preceding her in death were her parents, Joseph and Eugenie Plourde; her husband, Flavian Gagnon, in 1968; four brothers, Joseph, Edward Sr., Anthony (Tony) and Francis Plourde; and four sisters, Esther Berlin, Cecelia Schroeder, Viola Cartier and Marie Hartman. Mass of Christian Burial was at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hudson with Fr. Peter Szleszinski officiating. Music was provided by the Hope Choir. Burial was in the St. Patrick’s Cemetery with her grandchildren serving as casketbearers and great-grandchildren as honorary casketbearers.
