He was the father of Hudson Dr. Kevin Helmen. He was born Jan. 23, 1918, in Milaca, son of Elmer and Laura (Mathison) Helmen, and attended the Chase Brook Country School near his home through the eighth grade. He stayed at home to help on the farm for several years before he started high school so that his younger siblings could attend school. His own graduation from Milaca High School was delayed until 1937. On Jan. 17, 1942, he joined the U.S Army Air Corps guarding the Panama Canal and also serving on the Galapagos Islands earning the rank of staff sergeant before his honorable discharge Oct. 31, 1945. On Sept. 9, 1942, he was married to Elizabeth I. Tuffin in Bagley, Iowa. After the war, he returned to Milaca with his new wife, where he worked for many years as an artificial inseminator for 21st Century Genetics. He served as district manager in a career that spanned more than 30 years. He also worked as the manager of the local Milaca Co-op service station for a number of years. He was active in his community and was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church in Milaca where he served on a variety of boards and committees.. He was a former member of the Milaca Lions Club, the Civil Defense board and Mile Lacs County Fair Board. With his four sons involved in 4-H, he served as a 4-H leader with the Brookside 4-H Club and worked with the Saddle Dusters 4-H Horse Club. Surviving are four sons, Larry Dean (Marilou) Helmen of Ronan, Mont., Pastor Jerry Lee (Toni) Helmen of Sacramento, Calif.., Dr. Kevin Duane Helmen of Hudson and Craig Eugene (Ruth) Helmen of Orlando, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; great grandchildren; two sisters, Inez Erickson and Lois Packard, both of Milaca; and two brothers, Bud (Dottie) Helmen of Roseville, Minn., and Lyle (Corrine) Helmen of Duluth, Minn. Preceding him in death were his parents; two sons in infancy; his wife, Elizabeth, in 2001; two sisters and four brothers. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at the United Methodist Church in Milaca with the Rev. Kevin Dunn officiating. A niece, Cheryl Bailey, will be organist and two nieces, Diane Billmark and Laurie Murrer, will sing. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Milaca with sons and grandsons as casketbearers.. Hines, 96 Friday, November 19, 2004 James F. Hines, 96, of Hudson, formerly of Ellsworth and of Leigh, Fla., as a winter resident, died Saturday, Nov. 13. He was born Sept. 26, 1908, in Ellsworth, the son of Fred and Anna (Mallon) Hines, and was a 1926 graduate of Ellsworth High School. Following graduation he received his teaching certificate in 1927 and taught at a one-room school house for two years before entering the banking business. He began as a teller at the Citizens State Bank (now the First National Bank of Ellsworth) and worked his way up the ranks to become the bank vice-president, the position he held until his retirement in 1973. He met his future wife, Lolah Guenter, when he was working at the East Ellsworth Bank where she would bring in deposits from her family’s grocery store. They were married July 29, 1940, in Ellsworth. He was instrumental in the development and building of the Ellsworth County Club’s golf course that opened in 1963. He was an active member of St. Francis Catholic Church, where he did the church financial operations for many years, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed golf, fishing on family vacations at Balsam Lake and was an avid gardener. He cherished being with his wife, Lolah, and his family. Surviving are his three children, Gary (Jean) Hines of North Hudson, Jeanine (Paul) Marlin of Quincy, Ill., and Janelle (Bob) Hill of Minneapolis; eight grandchildren, Tara (Todd) Patet of Maplewood, Minn., Bretta Hines of La Crosse, Jessalyn Hines of Hudson, Kevin (Nicole) Marlin and Diann Marlin, both of Denver, Colo., Yvonne Marlin of Hurricane, Utah, Renee Hill of St. Paul and Natalie Hill of Minneapolis; and five great grandchildren, Matthew, Emma, Cali, Izabella and Sydney. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lolah Hines, on March 13; and a sister, Virgil Pulling. Mass of Christian Burial was at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, in the St. Francis Catholic Church in Ellsworth, with visitation one hour prior to Mass at the church. Burial was in the St. Francis Cemetery where pallbearers were Gary Hines, Bob Hill, Fred Pulling, Kevin Marlin, Todd Patet and Paul Marlin. He was born in Marshfield, May 9, 1984, the son of Kelly and Judy (Pence) Kuenn. While at Hudson High School he played trumpet and saxophone in the band, was on the swim and tennis teams, was goal tender on the hockey team and photographer on the school newspaper, the True Blue Times. He was a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In Hudson he was a member of the NETworks youth group and Faith Community Church and recently had membership in the Crystal Cove Community Church in Palm Harbor, Fla. He also was a member of the Ultimate Frisbee team at the university. He loved fishing and was an avid hockey player, went on two mission trips for Habitat for Humanity in Montana and was a fan of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Green Bay Packers and Chicago Cubs. Survivors are his parents, Kelly and Judy Kuenn of Holiday, Fla.; a brother, Kyle Kuenn of Palm Harbor, Fla.; a sister, Stephanie M. (Keith) Phipps of Chicago; paternal grandmother, Laurel Kuenn of St. Germain and Dunedin, Fla.; and maternal grandparents Everett and Marion Pence of Hobart, Ind.; four uncles, John Kuenn of Madison, Doug (Lon) Kuenn of La Crosse, Mark Pence and Joe Pence, both of Hobart; and an aunt, Mary Ricci of Cumberland. He attended high school and later was a student at River Fall Normal and received a teaching certificate. He was principally a farmer, was an assessor and was treasurer for the town of Troy for more than 25 years. He was a member of the Methodist Church, the farm Bureau, Order of the Moose and a past governor of the lodge several times, Good Sams Travel Club and served on the board of Glover Station school board. Survivors are a son, William Owens of New Richmond; five daughters, Donna (Clair) Wilcoxson, Judy (Marvin) Nielsen and Rita (Dale) Griffey, all of River Falls, Wilma Smith of Minneapolis and Joy (John) Reis of Baldwin; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Osen of Roberts. Preceding him in death was his wife, Mary June Owens, in 1997; a daughter, Merry Christine Nelson; a granddaughter, Jill Renee Reis; and a sister, Florence Sather. Stutzman, 62 Friday, November 19, 2004 James P. Stutzman, 62, of Hudson died at his home Wednesday, Nov. 10, after battling cancer since January. He was born April 14, 1942, in Kansas City, Mo. He attended William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., and it was there he met his future wife. On Aug. 16 , 1963, in Kirkwood, Mo., he was married to Susan Klenk. After they were married they moved to St. Paul where he started his career in management at Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company. He worked at the 3M plant in Prairie du Chien until 1990 when he and his wife moved to Hudson. While in Hudson he was involved in the activities of the Hudson County Club and served several terms on its board of directors. He was appointed in 2003 as a board member of the Wisconsin State Golf Association. Golf was an important part of his life and Stutzman was a state amateur competitor for more than 30 years. David Gray of Hudson, director of course ratings and member services for WSGA, and Dan Loken, head golf pro at the Hudson Golf Club, both had high praise for Stutzman and his promotion of all aspects of golf. His interests were varied. He enjoyed pheasant hunting, training hunting dogs and was a master carpenter. He was an avid fan of the Minnesota women’s basketball team. In his retirement he worked part time at St. Croix Cabinetry in Hudson. Surviving are his wife, Susan; two daughters, Julie (Wade) Halvorson of St. Louis Park, Minn., and Jenny (Kerry) Ojibway of Barneveld; and five grandchildren Cara, Reid, Benjamin, Gabriel and Brenden. A memorial service was at the United Methodist Church in Hudson at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14. Officiating at the service were Pastor Dr. Laurence Goebel and Pastor Dr. Joan Goebel. Memorials are suggested to Heartland Hospice and Access to Independence/Rolling Flames Hockey team in Madison. She was born Feb. 18, 1912 in the town of Troy, the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth (Mayer) Von Kuster. Her family was among the original pioneers in the German Settlement in the town of Troy, St. Croix County, in 1852. She was born and raised on the family farm and attended school until the eighth grade at the Pleasant View Country School. On Sept. 17, 1934, at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in River Falls, she was married to Edwin J. Stock.. She was a dedicated homemaker and lived and worked on the farm since her childhood and continued farming side by side with her husband. They farmed in the River Falls and Hudson areas until 1972, when they moved to Hudson. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, playing cards, and helping friends, family and neighbors. Surviving are two daughters, Lucille (Darwin) Edgar of Hallsville, Mo., and Shirley (Norman) Matzek of Hudson; nine grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great- grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her husband, Edwin, in 1999 and an infant son, Edward, in 1942. She was the last of her immediate family, being preceded by six brothers and two sisters. Mass of Christian Burial was at 11a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hudson with Father Peter Szleszinski officiating. Elsie Sandquist was the organist and accompanied vocalist Barbara Gagliardi. Music was also provided by the Hope Choir. Burial was in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Hudson with grandsons, Ronald, Gregory and Bradley Edgar, Jeffrey and Michael Matzek and great-grandson Shawn Weilep serving as pallbearers. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and was active in the American Legion Auxiliary, the United Methodist Church and United Church Women. For a number of years she sang with the Sweet Adelines. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Thomas; and two infant grandchildren. Surviving are three daughters, Cindy (Peter) Maki of Houston, Mo., Judy (Dietmar) Wyatt-Schlei of Hudson and Nancy (William) Unbehaun of Lago Vista, Texas; a brother, Douglas (Helen) Thompson of St. Croix Falls; six grandchildren, Alison and Christopher Maki, Derek Schlei, Gabriel, Michael and Bethany; and nieces and nephews Loren (Michelle) Thompson of Houlton, LaVonne Rost of Hammond, Jeff (Debbie) Wyatt of Shoreview, Minn., Richard (Nancy) Wyatt of Mounds View, Minn., and Laurie Osborne of Anoka, Minn. She was born in Baldwin, July 12, 1920, the daughter of George B. and Minnie O. (Peterson) Mennes, and came to Hudson with her family in the 1927 when her father became sheriff of St. Croix County. In 1938 she graduated from Hudson High School and during World War II she worked at Northern Pump in Minneapolis. On Jan.3l, 1942, in Washington, D.C., she was married to Donovan Jerome Thompson, then serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was the son of the Rev. Oscar C. and Matilda (Stene) Thompson. The Rev. Thompson was pastor of Bethel Lutheran Church in Hudson from 1923-1948. After World War II, she and her husband lived in Pennsylvania for a number of years where he taught at the University of Pittsburgh until 1966 when they moved to Seattle. In Seattle he was the dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Washington and the longtime chair in the Department of Biostatistics. In the early 1980s they spent a year in Hiroshima, Japan, where he was director of the Radiation Effects Research Foundation. In her later years in Seattle, she and some of her friends from the Sand Point Country Club worked in the buyback departments at the university bookstore. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Dr. Donovan Thompson, in 1991; and a sister, Ruby M. (Kyle) Fossum, of Atlanta in 1997. Survivors are her two daughters, Tove Thompson, who is married to Rolf Rundquist of Seattle; and Michel (Burdett) Loomis of Lawrence, Kansas; two grandsons, Casey Rundquist and Dakota Loomis; a sister, Marjorie (Edward) Bruns of Middleton; and a sister-in-law, Mary Ann (George D.) Klinker of Edgar. A private memorial service will be at a later date. Memorials are suggested to Providence Hospice or her favorite charity, the Donovan J. He was born Feb. 28, 1949, in River Falls, the seventh son of John and Harriett (Brathall) Prause. He was raised in Roberts where he went to grade school and later attended St. Croix Central High School. In 1967 he enlisted with the United States Marine Corps and served in Vietnam. On March 18, 1972, he married Nancy Medes of Boyceville, and they lived in River Falls until moving to Hudson in 1974. For nearly 20 years, he was employed with Standard Color of St. Paul and ended his career with Keystone of Minneapolis before leaving in September 2003 for health reasons. Surviving are his wife, Nancy; a daughter, Rustie (David) Prechel of Stoughton; a son, Lucas Prause of Hudson; three grandchildren, Seth, Bryce and Fiona Prechel; five brothers, Eugene (Janice) Prause of Fergus Falls, Minn.; Bruce (Jeanette) Prause of Glenwood, Minn.; Ronald (Diana) Prause of St. Peters, Mo., Jerry (Marie) Prause of Woodville and Donald (Christine) Prause of Altoona; and two sisters, Joanne (Robert) Werner of Eau Claire and Linda Lomblo of New Richmond. Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, David Prause, in 1992. He requested a simple funeral service and an open house was conducted in his honor, from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, at the Bakken-Young Funeral Home in Hudson. A private family committal service will be at the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner. She was born May 7, 1904, in the town of Cady, St. Croix County, the daughter of John and Gusta (Olson) Lunde. She was raised in rural Woodville and attended Cady School until the eighth grade, when she could no longer attend because of health reasons. On Oct. 31, 1925, in Woodville, she was married to Hobart A. Norvold. The couple lived and raised their children in Hudson. She was a longtime member of Bethel Lutheran Church and had worked for many years as a clerk in Olson’s Department Store in Hudson. Surviving are two sons, Howard D. (Joyce) Norvold of Woodville and Florida, and Robert J. Norvold of Hudson; two daughters, Donna I. (Richard G.) Mueller and Irene M. Norvold, both of Hudson; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Preceding her in death were her two husbands, Hobart Norvold in 1945 and Rufus St. Ores in 1957; a grandson, James, in 1996; and a great-grandson, Michael. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Hudson with Pastor Joanne Sorenson officiating. Organist Layton James accompanied congregational singing. Visitation was one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial was in the Lone Pine Cemetery in Woodville where grandchildren Peter Norvold, Mark Norvold, Paul Norvold, Scott Mueller, Bruce Mueller and Jonathan Mueller served as casketbearers. Memorials are suggested to charities of the donor’s choice.
