Hirsch, 80 James V. Hirsch, 80, died Monday Feb. 17, in Sequim, Wash., after a two-month battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Brigetta (Fleischmann) Hirsch, in 1992; and two sisters, Mary Scheurman and Flora Ann Hirsch. He is survived by his friend Evelyn Anderson of Mesa, Ariz.; a son, Steven J. Hirsch and fiancee Pamela Rosseth; two grandchildren, Mike and Leila Hirsch of Hudson; a daughter, Linda A. Hirsch of Denver, Colo.; a sister, Marjory Lange of Medford; two brothers, Alan Hirsch of Plover and Donald Hirsch of Medford. A private burial was Feb. 24 at Willow River Cemetery in Hudson with Father Dennis Meulemans, pastor at Holy Rosary Church of Medford, officiating. Steven Hirsch read a eulogy, and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No. 2115, of Hudson provided the honor guard. Hirsch was born Nov. 22, 1922, in Medford, the son of Vincent A. and Annie M. Hirsch. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Notre Dame’s school of architecture in South Bend, Ind. Drafted before he finished college during World War II, he became a lieutenant in rifle Company A, C-66 of the 12th Armored Division of the U.S. Army. He landed in France in September 1944. His company crossed France and entered Ludwigshafen, Germany, March 24, 1945. His ability to speak German was used to question prisoners and help get his fellow soldiers extra food from the locals they encountered. Wounded by a sniper, he received the Purple Heart decoration and was one of 60 men out of 245 in his original company that made it through the war. After returning from the war, he married his high school sweetheart, Brigetta Fleischmann of Medford, on Aug. 16, 1946. They moved to Minneapolis, where he attended the school of architecture at the University of Minnesota, graduating cum laude in 1948. In 1948 he was first employed by Ingemann & Bergstedt in St. Paul and in 1952 joined in the partnership of Bergstedt & Hirsch in the Highland Park area of St. Paul. He went on his own in 1962 and founded Hirsch Associates Inc. in Hudson on Second Street in what would be half of the space now occupied by the Daily Grind coffee shop. His family moved from St. Paul to Hudson in 1964 and lived on Sunset Lane on Lake Mallalieu. He designed and built the Professional Building at 619 Second St. The top floor housed Hirsch & Stevens, Architects and Engineers which later became Hirsch, Stevens & Samuelson Inc. In his last years in business in Hudson, the firm was known as Hirsch Associates Inc. It would be hard to find a town in western Wisconsin that Hirsch did not have a building that was designed by his firm. In Hudson there is the former St. Croix County Courthouse (now the Hudson Public Library), Hudson Senior High School, E.P. Rock addition, Hudson Hospital addition and Trinity Lutheran Church on St. Croix Street. Other buildings include the Barron County campus of the University of Wisconsin in Rice Lake, Polk County Courthouse, hospitals in Stanley, Medford and Shell Lake. The State Bank of Medford and State Bank of Hudson (now Wells Fargo) were also designed by Hirsch Associates. One of the finest churches done by his firm is St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in Frederic. He was one of the founders of the State Bank of Hudson and was a director and served as chairman of the board. He sold his interest in the bank in 1980, when he also sold his architectural firm he had left in St. Paul in 1962, which was now called BWBR. He and his wife then moved to Whidbey Island north of Seattle. Over the next seven years they remodeled one house and built another on Useless Bay Golf Course. Sailing and golfing were among his strongest passions in life, and he owned a large sailboat. In 1987 they moved to Rancho Bernardo near San Diego, Calif. There they remodeled another home and golfed. In 1991 they moved again, this time to Mesa, Ariz., where they built their last home together, in a community called Leisure World. After his wife, Brigetta, died in 1992, he returned in 1995 to the Seattle area, where he designed and built his dream house north of Sequim, Wash., on Sunland Golf Course. © 2003 Hudson Star-Observer - Reposted by permission http://www.hudsonstarobserver.com/Main.asp?SectionID=3&SubSectionID=54&ArticleID=7582
