Miller, 85 Isabelle E. Miller, 85, formerly of La Crosse, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, at the Christian Community Home in Hudson where she resided for the past two years. She was born Sept. 17, 1917, in Elroy, the daughter of George and Catherine (Bruggen) Ebert. On June 17, 1917, in La Crosse, she was married to LeRoy Frederick Miller. She was a member of the Garden Club, the Volunteer Ministries at Lutheran Hospital and an active member of St. Ann’s Ladies Society of Holy Trinity Parish, all in La Crosse. She enjoyed painting, sewing, dancing and traveling. Surviving are five daughters, Judith Shilling of St. Paul, Donna (Phil) Miller-Hicks of St. George, Vt., Mary (James) Hass of Cottage Grove, Minn., Gloria (Thomas L.) Clark of North Hudson, and Katherine Miller of Kissimmee, Fla.; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, George and Katherine Ebert; her husband LeRoy, in 1997; her son, LeRoy Louis, in 1968; 11 brothers and sisters. Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in La Crosse with Father Lawrence Berger officiating. Mary Kulas was organist for the church choir. Visitation was one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery in La Crosse where casketbearers were Justin Miller, John Clark, Michael Sarazin, David Fulmer, Dan Anderson, David Sparks, Bradman Smith and Joe Sarazin. Samarotto, 69 Robert (Bob) L. Samarotto, 69, a former UW-River Falls professor and father of Hudsonite Janet (Mark) Hoffman, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, in San Francisco, Calif., where he was visiting during the holidays. The son of Louis and Rita (Vercelli) Samarotto, he was born May 3, 1933, in New York. He completed his undergraduate work at the State University of New York, Fredonia, his master’s degree in music at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and did further postgraduate work at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 1962 he began teaching music and humanities at UW-River Falls, retiring in 1990. Music, poetry, fly-fishing and gardening were his lifelong work and play. He was a performing member of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Minnesota Opera and the Zeitgeist Ensemble, frequently touring Europe and the United States. In addition, he served as music director for the Guthrie Theater, recorded for Sony Classics, OO Records and New Albion Records, and was the recipient of numerous grants. As a poet, he collaborated with composers and visual artists. His poems have appeared in a variety of publications and are widely distributed in notecard format. Surviving besides his daughter Janet Hoffman are a son, Paul Samarotto of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Timothy and Joshua Hoffman; and his life partner, Patrice Marvin of River Falls. A music scholarship has been established in his name. Contributions may be made to “The UW-River Falls Foundation, Bob Samarotto Music Scholarship,” UW-RF Foundation, 410 S. Third St., River Falls WI 54022. A memorial gathering is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 25. Randolph Vernon Penner was born Feb. 27, 1921, near Hillsboro, Kansas, the son of Albert and Elizabeth (Reisen) Penner. On Dec. 29, 1946, he was married to Luella Tieszen. They first made their home in Newton, Kansas, then in Hudson from 1953 to 1999, when they moved to Freeman to be close to relatives. >From 1942 to 1945, he served in Civilian Public Service camps in La Pine, Ore., and Bowie, Md. He attended Wichita (Kansas) University and Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas, where he received a bachelor of fine arts degree. During his long and creative career as an artist, he worked as an illustrator for printing, calendar and aviation companies, including Brown & Bigelow in St. Paul. He was a commercial artist and then worked entirely in fine art, specializing in watercolors. He opened his own company, Pennerama Studio, in his home on Riverside Drive North in Hudson, overlooking Lake Mallalieu. He was a former president and active member of the Midwest Watercolor Society and American Society of Aviation Artists. His paintings hang in private and corporate collections across the nation. He also painted on location throughout North America as well as in England and Guatemala, and his work has been exhibited nationally as well as at The Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson. His watercolors won awards and high praise in magazines, on calendars, Christmas cards for Courage Center, and in numerous showings and exhibits throughout the country. In 1996, he wrote and illustrated a book, “A Harvest of Memories,” depicting his young years on a Kansas farm, that was distributed nationally. He is survived by his wife, Luella, and other relatives. Memorials may be directed to the H.D. Helen retired from the state of Wisconsin, where for a period of time she was personal secretary to Gov. Tony Earl. Surviving besides Mary Ellner are six other children and 13 grandchildren, including Rachel Ellner. A memorial Mass was at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lone Rock. A visitation was the same day from 11 a.m. to the time of the service. Surviving are two daughters, Sally (Gunter) Schilling of Brooklyn Park, Minn., and Mary Johnson of Apple Valley, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth (Ernest) Unger and Myrtle Johnson of Richfield, Minn.; and a brother-in-law, George Lundquist of Willmar, Minn. A memorial service was Saturday, Jan. 4, at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Hudson with Pastor Keith Lueneburg officiating and Susan Lueneburg accompanying congregational singing. Ward was the owner and publisher of the Hudson Star-Observer, through which she became the driving force for the creation of Hudson Memorial Hospital. Born June 15, 1910, in St. Paul, Minn., to Adele Hennig and Leon Borer, she was raised in the Macalester/Groveland neighborhood of St. Paul during the Great Depression. She taught ballet to fund her education at Ramsey High School. She was married first to Charlie Saunders and started Charlie’s Cafe Exceptionale in Minneapolis. They had one daughter, Charlene. In 1939 she was married to Charles Allen Ward. They had two daughters, Allen “Kiki” and Vida, and a son, Herbert. She was also married for 10 years to James Bryant, who is now deceased. Although a lifelong Democrat, she was sent in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on a goodwill mission to Russia, which she chronicled in a book, “Russia Through A Free Woman’s Eyes.” After the death of Charlie Ward in 1959, Yvette became president of Brown & Bigelow Manufacturing Co. in St. Paul. She lived in Phoenix from 1967 until her death and contributed her time and resources to many charitable organizations including the Barrow’s Neurologic Foundation and the Phoenix Art Museum. An active member of the Phoenix Country Club, she could always be found having lunch with her longtime companion and friend, David Wynne. Surviving are her four children, Charlene Saunders (Jimmy) Nederlander of New York City and Phoenix, Allen “Kiki” Ward Platt of southern France and Ireland, Vida Ward (Dejan) Dordevich of Portland, Ore., and Herbert Bigelow (Lori) Ward of St. Paul; seven grandchildren, Sharon Nederlander, Kristina Gustafson, Ward Platt, Micha and Charlie Ward Dordevich, Charlie and Jazz Yvette Ward; and three great-grandchildren, Gunnar and Krisanna Gustafson and Audrey Platt. There are tentative plans for a May memorial service in Hudson. Cameron, 74 Lyle J. Cameron, 74, of North Hudson died at home of cancer Saturday, Jan. 11. Born Jan. 19, 1928, in North Hudson, the son of William and Katherine (Cunningham) Cameron, he received his elementary education at St. Patrick’s and graduated from Hudson High School in the class of 1947. His education was interrupted by World War II when he enlisted in the Navy on Feb. 7, 1945, serving on the USS Wasp aircraft carrier in the Pacific. In July 1946 he was honorably discharged but served an additional duty with the Army National Guard beginning in 1955. On Sept. 27, 1947, he was married to Mary Rose Francis “Sis” Jesse at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Stillwater. He apprenticed as a blacksmith at the North Hudson car shops, became an electrician and owned Lyle’s Bar, now the Mallalieu Inn, in North Hudson. In December 1964 he entered treatment for alcoholism at the renowned Hazelden Foundation in Center City, Minn. He became a counselor and began a distinguished career in the field of chemical dependency. He worked at Hazelden, was founder and director of Wynot Treatment Center in Weyerhaeuser, director of alcohol and drug treatment services for St. Croix County and most recently was director of the Edgewood Program at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis, Mo., retiring in May 1991. While retired he continued to serve as a role model for others and maintained a network of contacts ready to assist anyone who needed help. In 1991 he received the Community Service Award from the National Council on Alcoholism. In September 2000, he was named one of Hudson High School’s most distinguished alumni with a plaque on the school Wall of Fame recognizing his contributions to the community. His hobbies included fishing, deer hunting, golfing and playing cards with family and friends. He also enjoyed woodworking, especially making doll houses. Preceding him in death were four brothers, Richard, Kenneth, Donald and Robert. Surviving are his wife, Sis; three children, William (fiance Helen Del Rosario) Cameron of Seattle, Wash., Colleen Cameron of St. Louis, Mo., and Mike Cameron of North Hudson; two sisters, Betty (Jerry) Kukuska of Bayport, Minn., and Mary (George) Hoel of Hudson; a brother, John (Mary) Cameron of West Des Moines, Iowa; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Visitation was Tuesday, Jan. 14, 4-8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:45, at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Hudson. Mass of Christian Burial was at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hudson with the Rev. Peter Szleszinski officiating. At the service, music was provided by the Hope Choir. Burial with full military honors provided by the Hudson VFW was in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery.
