Coleman, 88 Dr. John Bollinger Coleman, 88, of St. Paul/Minneapolis and St. Croix Cove, south of Hudson, died Monday, Nov. 11. He was born June 14, 1914, in Atchison, Kansas, graduated from the University of Kansas and Northwestern University Medical Schools and studied in Germany in 1939. As a captain in the U.S. Army, he served in the South Pacific on the hospital ship Hope. On April 22, 1944, in New York City, he was married to Myra Hurd of Abilene, Kansas. After fellowships in radiology at the University of Minnesota and residency in Cambridge, Mass., he joined St. Paul Radiology in 1950. He was department chief, head of residency training and chief of staff at the former Charles T. Miller Hospital in St. Paul, radiology chief at Children's Hospital in St. Paul and radiologist and chief of staff of Riverview Memorial Hospital in Minneapolis. At the University of Minnesota, he served as clinical associate professor of radiology. He also was chairman of the Ramsey County Medical Society, president of the Radiological Society, first president of Ramsey County Association of Retired Physicians, founder and first chairman of Physicians Metropolitan Health Force, president and trustee of Minnesota Medical Foundation and president of Minnesota Academy of Medicine. After retiring in 1984, he created Mindstretch Colloquia for retired men, modeling it after Myras New Century Club in St. Paul. For 16 years he invited academics and others to lecture on every topic imaginable for the organization. He also helped to found the Bedford Street Regulars, an informal meeting of politically minded friends. He is survived by his children, Janet, Jonathan and Cynthia, all of Minneapolis; two brothers, Jim of Sydney, Australia, and Jean of Newton, Kansas. His wife, Myra, died in 1998. Memorials are preferred to the Kansas University Endowment Association in Lawrence, Kansas. On Aug. 20, 1954, in Lafayette, Ind., he was married to Linda Barrett. He enjoyed playing golf, was an avid Cleveland Browns and Indians fan and liked spending time with his family. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and was a graduate of Purdue University in Lafayette, Ind., where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. Penman, 84 Gordon White Penman, 84, of Hudson, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a Bronze Star medal recipient and a German prisoner of war, died Thursday, Nov. 14, at the Christian Community of Hudson. Three weeks ago he had a leg amputated at United Hospital in St. Paul and had been recuperating at the Christian Community Home in Hudson until his death. He was born Aug. 31, 1918, in Hudson, the son of James R. and Mayme (Christie) Penman, and attended elementary schools and Hudson High School, where he played football and was a boxer. His many hobbies included collecting Indian arrowheads and rocks, scuba diving, hiking, coin and gun collecting. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Feb. 8, 1940, before America's entrance in World War II and was a national champion marksman. After war was declared, he was sent overseas to Europe, where he participated in the Battles of the Ardennes, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He was originally listed as "missing in action" after the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium on Dec. 18, 1944. Later it was learned he had been captured by the enemy and was a German prisoner of war in Muhlberg, Germany. He was released by American troops in April 1945, returned to the United States and was honorably discharged from the military at Camp McCoy in 1945. His decorations included American Defense Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Eastern Theater Ribbons with three Bronze Stars for Valor. He retired from the National Guard after 30 years of service and was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. In 1989 he was elected commander of the Indianhead Chapter of the Prisoners of War organization. Prior to going into the service, he worked briefly at the North Hudson Omaha Railroad shops and the former United Refrigerator Company in Hudson. After the war he employed at Brown & Bigelow in St. Paul and was a welder at Butler Stainless Steel in Minneapolis until he retired in 1978. On May 6, 1946, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hudson, he was married to Delores Jane Richie, daughter of Dominic and Rose (Dabruzzi) Richie. After his retirement he worked part time for G. Fred Kremer at Dick's Bar as a consultant and in maintenance. In August 1993, he and his wife, Delores, his brother, Robert, and his wife, Charlotte, were grand marshals of the Pepper Fest parade for their many contributions over the years to the annual event. Surviving are eight daughters, Linda (Dennis) Smith of Cedarburg, Julie (Jeff Bentoff) Penman of Milwaukee, Mary (Roman) Tuler of Mukwonago, Cindy Parr of Minneapolis, Heidi (Mike) Jacobson of Spring Valley, Robin Rose, Kim (Chris) Ployhart and Holly (Brian) Marrs, all of Hudson; five sons, Dennis Penman of St. Paul Park, Minn., Gary Penman and Mark Penman, both of Seeley, Terry Penman of Minneapolis and Tim (Jolene) Penman of Hudson. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren, Jeff Penman of Juneau, Alaska, Neal Smith of Cedarburg, Jennie Logan and Austin Jacobson, both of Spring Valley, Robert and Richard Tuler, both of East Troy, Dawn (Brian) Wade, Travis Rose, Cary Lamberta, Brett and Matt Parr, Marissa Cincoski, Heather and Holly Penman, Summer and Savanna Quinn, and Seth Marrs, all of Hudson; three great-grandchildren, Kayla and Nadia Lamberta and Nolan Wade, all of Hudson. Other survivors include six sisters-in-law, Eleanor (Adelbert) Penman, Charlotte (Robert) Penman, both of Hudson, Phyllis Hagen of St. Paul, Peggy Sirianni of Menomonee Falls, Katie Caliguire of Columbia Heights, Minn., and Evelyn (Glenn) Larson of Hudson. Preceding him in death in death were his wife, Delores Jane Penman, in 2001; two sons, Thomas George in 1994 and Jeffrey Kevin in 1963; two brothers, Adelbert Penman in 1988 and Robert Penman in 2000; a sister, Charlotte Ann Penman, in 1987; two sisters-in-law, Louise Reisinger Lubich and Carmelle Richie; and a brother-in-law, George Richie. Mass of Christian Burial was at 10 a.m, Monday, Nov. 18, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hudson with Fr. Peter Szleszinski officiating. Organist Elsie Sandquist accompanied the Hope Choir. Burial was in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Hudson, where his sons were casketbearers. Honoring his dedication to our country, the Hudson Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No. 2115, paid tribute with full military honors. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 in the Pacific Theatre of War. On March 7, 1946, at Peace Lutheran Church in Menomonie, he was married to Dona Marie Rose. He graduated in 1950 from the Wisconsin Institute of Mortuary Science in Milwaukee and then worked in several Wisconsin funeral homes until he returned to Menomonie in 1957. For more than 30 years he was employed as a funeral director with the Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie until he retired in 1990. He also was a representative of the Johnson Monument Company for many years. He was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church, the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1584, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1039 and the American Legion Post No. 32. He was a member and past master of the Masonic Lodge No. 164 F. & A.M., the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite in Eau Claire, the Zor Shrine in Madison and the Mehara Shrine Club. Also, he was a member of the Wisconsin Funeral Directors Association. On June 18, 1937, in Waukon, Iowa, she was married to Arthur Volker, who preceded her in death Nov. 4, 1977. Later, in 1985, she was married to Clieve Frazier. She was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church, a member of Mercy Rebekah Lodge in Hudson and the Women of the Moose Lodge in Hayward. Her family was her main interest, though later she did work outside the home. She assisted at parties given by Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Ward at their estate east of Hudson, worked part time as a clerk at Micklesen Drug Store and at the Hudson Clinic. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting gifts for the family and polka dancing. Survivors are her daughter, Earleta "Skip" (Roger) Peterson of Hudson; three grandchildren, Lynn (Len) Rude of North Hudson, David (Cathy) Peterson of Roberts and Lori (Mark) Zimmerman of Woodbury, Minn.; five great-grandchildren Robert, David and Samantha Zimmerman and Jason and Elizabeth Rude; and two sisters, Marolyn (George) Reynolds of Harvard, Ill., and Rose Mary (Norman) Massoth of Rockford, Ill. On Dec. 1, 1995, he was married in Bloomington, Minn., to Charlene "Char" (Barr) Brousseau, and they resided in Hudson. He was formerly married in 1970 to Virginia Kaye Rothe. Since 1999 he and his wife, Char, have lived in the town of Casey. He was an avid bowler, enjoyed hunting, auto racing and was a Packer fan. Surviving are his wife, Char; three children, Stacy (Les) Mortimer of Amery, Melissa Corcoran and Matthew Corcoran, both of Hudson; a stepson, Jason Brousseau of Eau Claire; two grandchildren, Jeremy and Cody; his father, "Corky" Corcoran of Hudson; a sister, Susan (Craig) Noreen of Hudson; two nieces, a nephew and a grand niece. About 10 years ago he sold Lowry Central. He was inducted into the Minneapolis Bowler's Hall of Fame in 1990 for meritorious service and was an avid golfer. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Audrey, in 1996; a sister, Lotus Avon Dittman, in 1982; and a brother, Duvonne Lorrell Bylander, in 1998. She was born Jan. 5, 1915, in Hudson, the daughter of Eric C. and Ann (Heggen) Petersen, and attended Hudson schools, graduating from Hudson High School in 1932. She attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, where she was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority. She loved music and was an accomplished violinist. She and her sister, Donna Petersen, a talented pianist, played at many special events in the Hudson area. Miriam Petersen went on to become concert mistress of the University of Minnesota orchestra as well as the Minneapolis Symphony. On June 24, 1939, in Hudson, she was married to Chester Oliver Hylland. She and her husband traveled to many exciting places during his tenure with the federal government. They lived in Alaska, Japan and Hawaii before retiring in 1977 in Bothell to be close to their family. Surviving are two sons, Michael (Cheri) Hylland of Everett, Wash., and Richard Hylland of Oklahoma City, Okla.; three grandchildren, Amy (Hylland) Beeman, Jeff Hylland and Emily Hylland; and a sister, Donna W. Petersen of Hudson. Preceding her in death, besides her parents, were her husband, Chester Hylland, in 1992, and a brother, David Kenwood Petersen, in 1988. Graveside services will be at a later date with burial at Williamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore. During the Korean War period he served two years in the U.S. Army in Texas and overseas in Germany. For 30 years he was employed by Buerkle Buick Comapany in Vadnais Heights, Minn. He was married in 1956 to Verlene Amundson. In 1986, he and his wife took over the operation of the Hudson News Agency from Phil and Lucy Gearhart in the distribution of the St. Paul Pioneer Press and Dispatch in the Hudson and North Hudson area. At that time, about 1,500 papers were delivered on a daily basis and 2,400 on Sunday. Surviving are his wife, Verlene; his children, Becky (Leonard) Ruka, Pamela Wagner, David Wagner, all of River Falls, and Cynthia Green of Prescott; four grandchildren, Eric Wagner, Andrew Ruka, Kimberly Ruka and Danielle Green. Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Willard and Desmond; a sister, Marguerite; and a son-in-law, Michael Green. A private funeral service was at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at the Cashman Mortuary in River Falls. He was born in Wright County, Minn., May 30, 1920, the son of James Arthur and Cecelia (Smith) Lewis, and came to Hudson with his parents as a youngster. As a young man in the 1930s, he served in the Wisconsin Civilian Conservation Corps. He entered the U.S. Army Oct. 15, 1940, and served until July 11, 1945. During World War II he had duty as a truck driver in New Guinea, Papua, South Philippines and Luzon in the South Pacific Theater of War. On Oct. 16, 1948, in Mason City, Iowa, he was married to Judith Ann Lewis. After the war he was employed at United Refrigerator Company in Hudson and later worked for Seeger/Whirlpool in St. Paul for more than 28 years, until he retired. He enjoyed yard work, flowers and fishing. For the past seven and a half years he had been a resident at the Lutheran Home in River Falls. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Judith A. Hudson, in 1999; a stillborn son, Jack; two brothers, Walter and William Hudson; and two sisters, Laura Schullo and Catherine Carter. Surviving are his daughter, Linda (Roger C.) Norelius of North Hudson; a granddaughter, Cheryl (David) Belisle of Stillwater; and a great-granddaughter, Ashley Belisle. She was born in Northwood, Iowa, Aug. 28, 1911, the daughter of Ole H. and Anna Marie (Nystuen) Huus, and graduated in 1929 from Northwood High School, where she attended one year of post-graduate study in shorthand and typing. In May 1934, she graduated from Mounds-Midway School of Nursing in St. Paul, where she received her registered nurse designation. On Nov. 14, in her parent's home in Northwood, she was married to Merle Clifford Steele. The lived in St. Paul and Minneapolis from 1936 to 1947, when they moved to Hudson. While in Hudson they operated the Western Auto Supply store at 424 Second St. from January 1948 to June 1975, when they retired and sold the business. After the death of her husband in 1976, she moved to Northwood, Iowa, where she was a member of the First Lutheran Church. In May 1996 she moved to Briarcliff Manor in Mahtomedi to be closer to immediate family. In Mahtomedi she was a member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church. She enjoyed playing bridge and cribbage, doing needlepoint, bird watching and baking. She was a gifted and caring nurse and for 23 years did active duty as a registered nurse at Hudson Memorial Hospital from its initial opening in 1952 until her retirement in 1975. Besides her husband, Merle, and her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest L. Huus, and five sisters, Olga M. Huus, Cora A. Petersen, Palma J. "Polly" Christiansen, Inga Swensrud and Hannah Watkins. Surviving are two sons, Thomas A. (Joanne) Steele of La Crosse and Robert B. Steele of Reading, Pa.; a daughter, Janet (Terrence) Jones of Stillwater; four grandchildren, Dr. Jeff (Julie) Steele of Edina, Minn., Carolyn (Steve) Husten of Stillwater, Paul (Erin) Jones of Annapolis, Md., and Amy Jones of Stillwater; and three great-grandchildren, Collin and Susanna Steele, both of Edina, and Zachary Husten of Stillwater.
