He was born Oct. 15, 1929, in Menomonie, the son of Harold B. and Selma (Schwede) Apel, and graduated from Menomonie High School. On April 15, 1961, in Mason City, Iowa, he was married to Marylyn Marie "Sis" Clymer. He was a retired carpenter and cabinetmaker. His enjoyments included fishing, hunting, woodworking and being with his family. Survivors are his wife, Marylyn; five daughters, Ruth Shattuck of Lindstrom, Minn., Lori Apel (Rod Schmelzer) of Bloomington, Minn., Patti Apel of North Hudson, Sally M. (Daniel) Haggerty of Hammond and Shelly (Timothy) Hollyday of North Hudson; six grandchildren Tom, Robert, Carrie, Muriel, Jessica and Danielle; and a sister, Donna Worrell of Gillette, Wyo. Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, Harold M. Apel, in 1975. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hudson with Pastor Fred Golke officiating. Burial was in Willow River Cemetery, where casketbearers were Timothy Hollyday, Rod Schmelzer, Daniel Haggerty, Robert Haggerty, Jessica Haggerty and Carrie Ann Shattuck. Honorary bearers were Thomas Apel, Muriel Haggerty and Danielle Hollyday. On Feb. 12, 1944, in Stillwater, Minn., she was married to George A. Miller of Fort Madison, Iowa. After the death of her first husband, in 1956, she later married Garold "Goose" Giese. They lived in St. Paul until moving to Poquettes Lake in the town of Dewey, Rusk County. Garold Giese died April 18, 1985, and she moved to Spooner in 1990. Surviving are her daughter, Gloria (Randy) Thue of Spooner; a brother, David A. Cleveland of Lakewood, Colo.; four nieces and five nephews. In addition to her two husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Marjorie Soucy (2001) and Audrey Schwartz (2000), and a brother, Raymond A. Cleveland (1998). In accordance to her wishes, services are private and burial will be in the Spooner Cemetery. She graduated from Memorial High School in Eau Claire, after which she attended the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis. After finishing her business training she took a position with the American National Bank in Eau Claire, first as a teller and then as supervisor of the drive-through department. On Jan. 29, 1966, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Eau Claire, she was married to LaVerne "Vern" Larson. In 1968 the couple moved to Minneapolis when her husband, Vern, an employee of Northern States Power Co., was transferred there to take a new position. They came to Hudson in 1972 to make their home. After their children were grown, she worked as a hostess at the Best Western Hudson House Inn for several years. She loved spending time at their vacation home on Bone Lake, where she enjoyed boating, fishing and entertaining family and friends. She was known for her fun attitude and caring manner. Survivors are her husband, LaVerne of Hudson; two daughters, Amee Elizabeth (Harold Brown) Larson of Eagan, Minn., and Kari Larson of Hudson; a granddaughter, Taylor; her father, Wilton Burr, and sister, Kathlyn (Tim) Berg, both of Eau Claire; and two nephews, Ryan Berg of Eau Claire and Adam Berg of River Falls. Foss, 89 Emily Bridget Foss, 89, of Hudson, a longtime business woman, died at her home Sunday, Oct. 27. She was born March 27, 1913, in St. Paul, Minn., the daughter of Emil and Lillian (Kennedy) Bourdon. The oldest of six children, she was 14 years old when her father became seriously ill and she had to leave school to help support her family. In applying for a job, she said she was older in order to get a job in downtown St. Paul. Later she attended night school to learn bookkeeping. This worked out well for her in later years. On May 12, 1934, in Hastings, Minn., she was married to Wallace "Wally" Henry Foss. In 1951, they bought the Hudson Elevator Company, at 111 Commercial Street, in Hudson. It was then her bookkeeping training came in handy. While her husband was busy at the grain elevator, she did the company's books at home while caring for her family. After her husband died in 1971, she went to the business every day to work alongside her oldest son, Wally Foss Jr., who assumed his father's position. When Wally Foss Jr. died in 1984, she continued from her home to assist her grandson, Richard, in the operation of the business. When she turned 80 years old, in 1994, she sold the Hudson Elevator Company. She enjoyed spending time with her family and was an avid golfer. She was a member of Mount Zion Lutheran Church, a charter member of the Hudson Country Club and had a lifetime membership at the Badlands Golf Course in Roberts. She was a very caring and compassionate person who frequently sent cards with uplifting messages to shut-ins. Survivors are her daughter, Joyce Anne Johnson of Roberts; three sons, David (Susan) Foss of Le Claire, Iowa, Joseph (Ruth) Foss of Hudson and Robert (Laurie) Foss of Stillwater; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; three sisters-in-law, Hazel Foss of Wayzata, Minn., Elanor Bourdon and Donna Bourdon, both of St. Paul; and a brother-in-law, Jerome Evans of Lindstrom, Minn. Preceding her in death, besides her husband, Wallace H. Foss, in 1971, were her son, Wallace H. Foss Jr., in 1984, a son-in-law, Lauren Johnson, two brothers, Emil and Harvey Bourdon, and two sisters, Josephine Scheunck and Lillian Evans. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, at Mount Zion Lutheran Church in Hudson with Pastor Keith Luenberg officiating. At the service organist Betty Fyksen will accompany vocalist Robin Arneson. She was born Sept. 3, 1910, in North Mankato, Minn., the daughter of Carl W. and Josephine (Baarson) Gens. She and her family moved to Great Falls, Mont., in 1916 and she attended local schools, graduating from Great Falls High School in 1928 . Later she attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., the UCLA Riverside School of Librarianship and the University of Minnesota Library School On Dec. 30, 1935, she was married to Stephen Victor Frohlicher in Great Falls, Mont. In 1942 the couple moved to St. Paul and then to Hudson in 1944. She was head librarian of Univac, Division of Speery Rand Corp. in St. Paul, for seven years. While in Hudson she participated in Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Red Cross and was a volunteer at the Hudson Public Library. She and her husband were active in the promotion and building in 1952 of Hudson Memorial Hospital. They moved back to Great Falls in 1965, and she again joined the staff of the Great Falls Public Library, where she was reference librarian until 1973, when she retired. The Frohlichers returned to Hudson in 1987 to be close to their son, Stephen, and became residents of WinterGreen Apartments, where they made many new friends. She was a dedicated, lifelong member of the Order of Eastern Star, where she served as worthy matron. She was a president of her Chapter BJ of the PEO Sisterhood and in 1996 received her 50-year membership pin. She also was a member of the St. Paul Women's City Club, St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Hudson and former member of the Governor's Commission of Children and Youth. Her ongoing hobby was compiling genealogical records of her family, and reading was her primary interest. Surviving are her son, Stephen G. (Diane) Frohlicher of Hudson; and two grandchildren, Keith V. Frohlicher of Milwaukee and Mariette (Mark) Atkinson of Ann Arbor, Mich. Preceding her in death was her husband, Stephen V. Frohlicher, in 1993; a brother, Gordon Gens, in 1965; and a sister, Dorothy (John) Glass, in 2002. An Eastern Star service will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31 (today), at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson, with a visitation one hour prior to the service. He relished winning an argument with honor and was a vital and supportive partner in his wife's ministry. Survivors are his wife, the Rev. Karen L. On Nov. 17, 1927, in Stillwater, he was married to Mary Bentina Jensen, who died in 1959. He started Boy Scout Troop 78 in Downsville in 1946 and was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Menomonie. He also enjoyed his trips to Europe with his son and daughter-in-law, to Trub, Switzerland, to see the family homestead and with his son to Denmark to visit his wife's family. Surviving are a daughter, Beverly (Kenneth) Dahms of Downsville; a son, Karl M. (Virginia) Kunz of Hudson; four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife, five brothers, three sisters and a grandson, Duane Karl Kunz, in 1988. She was born March 28, 1956, in Baldwin, the daughter of Walter and Audrey (Moeller) Pieper, and graduated from St. Croix Central High School in Hammond. After finishing high school she worked as a nurse's aide in Parkview Nursing Home in Woodville. She also worked at Toro Manufacturing in North Hudson, as a waitress at the Coachman Supper Club and as a clerk at the Gregerson Hardware, both in Baldwin. On Feb. 12, 1977, at the Presbyterian Church in Baldwin, she was married to Dean "Barney" Norden. Most recently she was employed as a waitress at LaBon's Truck Stop in Hudson and as a claims service assistant for State Farm Insurance Co. in Woodbury, Minn. She loved bowling, and she and her husband bowled for many years at Bol's Lanes. She also was an avid bird watcher, a talented seamstress and a proud grandmother. Survivors are her husband, Dean, three children, Jason, Kelly and April, all of Baldwin; two grandchildren, Devin and Payton; and five sisters, Joanne Rattei of Scandia, Minn., Darlene (Gary) Kassube of Eagan, Minn., Donna (Ron) Medin of Fridley, Minn., Gerri Lee of Osceola and Lucy (Keith) Doornink of Baldwin. Preceding her in death were her parents and a brother-in-law, Jerome Rattei. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, at the United First Presbyterian Church in Baldwin with Pastor Don Shilts of the Bible Center Church in Maiden Rock officiating. Burial was in the Baldwin Cemetery, where Jeff Doornink, Justin Lee, Jim Medin, Greg Kassube, Tim Sackett and Blair Gunderson were casketbearers. He was born in Hudson June 9, 1922, the son of John N. and Hilma (Antonson) Olson. He attended local schools, graduating from Hudson High School in 1940, and later from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in England, where he was a mechanic for B-17 aircraft. On June 20, 1946, in Hudson, he was married to Marion Arlene Hope, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence "Corky" Hope. For many years he was employed as a principal systems engineer for Honeywell Inc. After his retirement he and his wife moved to Arizona, where he was an active member of the Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Kiwanis International, University of Minnesota Alumni and other organizations. For the past five years he led Bible studies for the Prison Fellowship Ministries. Preceding him in death were his parents. Surviving are his wife, Marion of Sun City West; two daughters, Adrian Schueneman of Monterey, Calif., and Arlayne Eseman of Seattle, Wash.; five grandchildren, Steven, Nora and Nancy Schueneman and Connelly and Jonathan Eseman; a brother, Arthur N. Olson of North Port, Fla.; and a sister, Dorothy Resell of Harlingen, Texas. He was a brother-in-law of John D. "Jack" and Willetta A. She assisted her husband in managing and running Consumer Milk Co. and the Alloy Specialties in St. Paul, which they owned. She also had her own business, the North Star Magazine Agency, which she operated until her retirement. She loved gardening, bird watching, boating, sewing, her painting, writing poetry, singing, cooking and being with her family, especially her grandchildren. Surviving are a son, James (Consoline) Brugler of Hudson; two daughters, Joanne (George) Hixson of Carrollton, Texas, and Carol (David) Enochson of Cottage Grove, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Susanne Brugler of Shoreview, Minn.; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, a son, Edward, five sisters and a brother. Visitation will be Thursday, Nov. 14 (today), from 5 to 8 p.m. at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church in Hudson with Fr. Peter Szleszinski officiating. She was born Oct. 28, 1910, in Knapp, the seventh of the eight children of the late William and Mary (Claire) Covell. In 1912 the family moved to North Hudson, where William Covell worked for the Omaha Railroad, purchased three acres adjacent to the car shops and built the family home. Gwen attended the North Hudson Elementary School, graduated from Hudson High School in 1928 and studied briefly at River Falls State Teachers College (now University of Wisconsin-River Falls). On June 26, 1932, she was married to Fredrick Bunce. They raised their three children at the family home in North Hudson, which she maintained until her retirement in 1977. In 1952 she began a professional career as a proofreader and editorial reviser at West Publishing Company, law book publishers in St. Paul. After her retirement she moved to Victoria, B.C. Her survivors are a son, Dr. Fredrick William Bunce, emeriti faculty from Indiana State University, who lives and conducts research in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; two daughters, Rona Marion (John) Slomke, a retired registered nurse of Victoria, B.C., and Madelyn Claire (Lyle) Burchill, a professor of German at Concordia College (Moorhead, Minn.), who lives in Fargo, N.D. There are eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband, Fred, in 1961. A memorial service is set for 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, at the First Baptist Church in Hudson. The daughter of Iver and Alice (Persells) Severson, she was born Dec. 22, 1913, in Hudson. She graduated from Hudson High School in 1931 and from University of Wisconsin-River Falls with a bachelor of science and a master of science in education. In 1933, she married John Emmet Jensen. Mrs. Jensen taught school in Beldenville and later moved to Carver School in the North St. Paul School District, retiring in 1979. Her family said she loved visiting Europe and making trips to Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and Alaska. She was a member of the Chequamegon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Hudson, Business and Professional Women, Art Club, Rock Club and the National Education Association. Mrs. Jensen was a 4-H leader, enjoyed poetry, reading, rock collecting and painting watercolors. Her family said she was very proud that she never missed voting in an election. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emmet Jensen, in 1985; two brothers, Donald Severson in 1974 and Lloyd Severson in 1947; and two sisters, Hazel and Margaret Severson. She is survived by her five children, John Jensen, Janis Melum and Jules Jensen, all of River Falls, Joanne (Albert) Madsen of Menomonie and Jim Jensen of Rochester, Minn.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Maxine Muckenhirn of Hudson and Charlotte Jensen of River Falls. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, at United Methodist Church in River Falls. A memorial service will follow the next day at 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec.7, also at the church. Surviving are her son, Robert (Judy) Strobush of Amery; three grandchildren, Lori (Geno) Madden of Hudson, Tammi Burris of Ham Lake, Minn., and Scott Strobush of White Bear Lake; three great-grandchildren, Nathan Burris, Cole and Claire Madden; and a sister-in-law, Irene Meier of St. Paul. She had been suffering from peripheral artery disease for about a year and had moved to North Carolina in February. She was born in Pierce County Aug. 21, 1911, the daughter of Wallace and Lura (Aldrich) Smith, and was a descendant of Dr. Philip Aldrich, who was Hudson's first postmaster, from 1849-1851. In 1930 she graduated from River Falls Normal School (now University of Wisconsin-River Falls), where she received her teaching certificate and taught at Oak Ridge School (on County Road F) for seven years. On June 15, 1937, at Trinity Lutheran parsonage in Hudson, she was married to Lyle Alfred Waxon. She was a longtime member of the Nifty Neighbors (formerly You Go I Go), a 53-year member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hudson and a volunteer at Hudson Medical Center. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Lyle Waxon, in 1974; three infant children, Eloise, Lois and Burton; and two sisters, Leora Mayer in 1946 and Inez Boney in 1996. Survivors are her daughter, Janice (Don) Goetz of Davidson; two grandchildren, Christopher Goetz of Lexington, Tenn., and Lindsay Goetz of Butte, Mont.; two brothers, Charles (Beverly) Smith of Madison and Marlin (Meiko) Smith of Rockledge, Fla.; three sisters, Vycella Waxon and Olive (Leo) Crimmins, both of Hudson, and Alice Tonella of Marquette, Mich. The funeral service was Tuesday, Nov. 12, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hudson. Pastor Fred Golke officiated with Nell Black assisting and former Pastor Dan Bruch sharing the obituary and remembrances. Music at the service was provided by vocalist Carol Dahle accompanied by Lori Peper. Visitation was Monday at the Bakken-Young Funeral Home in Hudson. Burial was in Willow River Cemetery. Blaisdell, 80 Donald Burton Blaisdell, 80, a former resident of Hudson, died Thursday, Nov. 14, in the Osceola Hospital. Since leaving Hudson he and his wife have lived in Luck, Siren and Dresser. He was born in Minneapolis Dec. 13, 1921, the son of Elmer and Florence (Collett) Blaisdell. He grew up and attended school in New Auburn. After graduating from high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army Oct. 14, 1940, and served 43 months overseas in the Northern Solomons and the Southern Philippines in South Pacific Theatre of War. He accumulated many service awards including the Distinguished Service Cross, the Good Conduct Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and six Overseas Service Bars. He also was the highest rank in the Legion of Valor for the state of Wisconsin. On April 20, 1956, he was married at St. Patrick's Church rectory in Hudson to Diana Mary Frey, daughter of the late George P. and Bertha (Kroboth) Frey. He and his wife and family lived in Hudson for many years. He held a number of jobs, first as a butcher at John Hooley's Public Provision and then in construction work, masonry and plastering. For 25 years he was employed as a maintenance engineer for Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M) in St. Paul until he retired. He enjoyed playing cribbage, boxing, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. Preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers, Elmer E. Blaisdell Jr. and Edwin J. "Bud" Blaisdell. Surviving are his wife, Diana of New Richmond; two sons, Michael H. (Lori) of New Richmond and Timothy (Diane) of Roberts; a daughter, Julie Ann (David Marshall) Blaisdell of Hudson; a brother, Jack Blaisdell of North Branch, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.
