She is preceded in death by her husband George and her parents, Joseph (Ed) and Clara Smead, and an infant brother and sister. She is survived by her children, Catherine (Michael) Haugen, Chip (Trish) Norman and Karin (Bob) Schuchman; brother-in-law Mark (Patti) Slaughter; six grandchildren; one-great-grandchild; five nieces; many cousins and fiance Rolly Meier. Pat was born March 30, 1936 in Amery. She attended New Richmond schools and graduated in 1954. Pat married George Norman Sept., 15, 1956. She attended UW-Eau Claire and UW-River Falls, graduating in 1959 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Pat later completed a master’s degree in reading (1976) and administration (1979) through UW-River Falls. She started her 40-year career in education in Ann Arbor, Mich. while George attended law school. When she returned to New Richmond in 1961 her career in education continued and included working as a classroom teacher, Title I teacher, reading specialist and administrator in the New Richmond school system. In 1989 she became a Title I reading consultant for CESA 11 and retired after 10 years. Pat was a member of many professional organizations including the St. Croix Valley Reading Council, Wisconsin State Reading Association, Phi Delta Kappa, the Association of Wisconsin School Administrators, the International Reading Association and served as president of the Northwestern Wisconsin Education Association. Throughout her career she held many offices and served on many committees. In 1994 she was elected to the New Richmond school board and served for five years. Some of Pat’s other community involvements included the United Way of St. Croix County and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. A visitation was held from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 13 at the United Methodist Church in New Richmond. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 14 with a visitation preceding at 12 noon. The service was conducted by Pastor Alan George with organist Jerri Rang, pianist Dennis Alfveby and soloist Bill Leahy. Honorary pallbearers were Norma Fish, Karen Hall, Marlene Marlett, Cindy Meyers, Marie Peirson, and Polly Simpson. Pallbearers were Bud Anderson, Jim Drill, Michael Early, Lowell Gillette, John Helling, Paul Mack, Ray Meier, Chuck Polfus and Jack Reckord. Pat was interred at the New Richmond Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the Healy-Norman Literacy Fund or the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. He retired from Andersen Windows, Bayport, Minn., after 37 years of service. Henry was a craftsman making special gifts for his family and friends. He loved his family, flowers, wintering in Mesa, Ariz. and having coffee daily with his friends. Henry will live on in the hearts and minds of all of us. He was a member of the Bayport American Legion, New Richmond Knights of Columbus, New Richmond V. F. W., and the Andersen Windows Quarter Century Club. He was preceded in death by parents, Henry and Anges; brothers, Lyle and Vincent “Bud”; granddaughter, Lyndzy Mae Martin. Art was one of the foremost authorities on plastic laminate fabrication and enjoyed a long relationship with the Formica Corporation. Art was preceded in death by his wife Jeanette and brother Byron “Duke” Betterley. He is survived by four sisters, Margaret Evans, Audrey Hellam, Gladys Calvin, Jeanette Cox; one step-daughter, Joy (Charles) Class; one step-son, Jon (Connie) Jerdee; four step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She grew up and attended school in Stillwater. It was in Stillwater that she also met Edwin D. Bernstein. Gloria and Ed were united in marriage on June 25, 1960 in Clayton and were blessed with two daughters. After marriage Gloria and Ed lived in Hammond, and in 1968 they moved to Somerset where they lived until moving to Clayton in 2001. While living in Somerset, Gloria taught Sunday school and was active with the ALCW at Christ Lutheran Church. She drove school bus for 26 years. She loved to cook and always was there for her family and friends. She also enjoyed her garden and loved to feed the birds. On Wednesday, May 7 Gloria passed away at the Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater, Minn. at the age of 59. She was preceded in death by her parents Harry and Helen; sisters Violet, Lorraine, Delores, and Betty Lou; and brother Ronnie. She will be deeply missed by her husband Ed; daughters, Deborah (Todd) Nielsen and Barbara Bernstein; brothers, Donald (Marvel), Richard (Barb), and Glendon (Barbara); sisters, Bernice and Gladys, and many other loving relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 10 at Faith Lutheran Church in Clayton with Revs. Loren and Linda Schumacher officiating. Organist was Carol Van Heuklom. The former Margaret Christman was born on April 24, 1933 in Benecia, Calif. to John and Margaret (Murray) Christman. She graduated from Vallejo High School in California. She served in the Civil Air Patrol and was a squad leader during World War II. Her squadron assisted in sinking two Japanese subs. Margaret was then employed in the banking business for 26 years. She converted to faith in Jesus Christ through her work with the Salvation Army. She was a long time member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Daly City, Calif. and also the First Baptist Church in New Richmond. Her life touched many people, who found their needs met in unusual ways. Margaret was an accomplished writer and was published in a number of periodicals. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2003 at the First Baptist Church in New Richmond. Her son Rev. Leonard Allen will preside. She is survived by her husband Paul Allen; one son Leonard (Rebekah) Allen; one daughter Doris (LeRoy) Thaemert; three grandchildren, Amber and Michael Thaemert and Jonathan Allen. She was affectionately known as “Punkin” by her siblings, two sisters Dorothy (Jack) Lawton, Cassie Niswonger and one brother, John (Patricia) Christman. Bachman, 50, of Hudson, a former Twin Cities businesswoman and 16-year partner of Bachman Printing in Minneapolis, died of cancer Monday, Sept. 23, in Camp Verde, Texas. She and her husband, Frank J. Bachman, lived south of Hudson in the town of Troy. She was born in Omaha, Neb., Oct. 4, 1951, the daughter of Merlyn and Dolores Haldeman. Bachman, who traveled between her home in Hudson and a second home in Camp Verde, Texas, had a remarkable career. As a specialist in preparing legal briefs, Bachman spent 16 years in the printing industry. Her business achievements were recognized with many awards and honors, including being the first female recipient of the Bellevue University (Neb.) achievement award and honors from the National Association of Women Business Owners. Bachman was a 1979 graduate of Bellevue University (summa cum laude). She was a member of the board of directors at Bellevue University, an officer for the Minnesota International Center and National Association of Women Business Owners. She was both a speaker and officer of the Minneapolis Convention Bureau and an active member of the Cattle Women's Association and Minneapolis Club. She traveled to more than 75 countries, loved gardening and was an excellent cook. Surviving are her husband, Frank J. Bachman; three sons, Jay Gage of Pflugerville, Texas, Jarod Bachman of Kerrville, Texas, and Joshua Bachman of Pflugerville; two stepdaughters, Rebecca Bachman of New York City and Suzanne Bachman of Lakeland; three grandchildren, Kayla, Jenica and William Charles; her mother, Dolores Barkley of Gretna, Texas; and two sisters, Jill Perry and April Haldeman, both of Gretna. A memorial service was in Kerrville, Texas, at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at the Cowboy Artist Museum. A former resident of Burkhardt, he had lived in Florida for 20 years. He was born in Hudson Sept. 8, 1920, the son of Glenn L. and Lilah (Holden) Batten, of Burkhardt, and attended Hudson High School, graduating with the class of 1937. On Sept. 3, 1949, he was married at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Burkhardt to Marjorie May Westhoff, daughter of William H. and Lydia A. Westhoff. He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1943 and was employed as an engineer working 35 years with Cities Service Oil Company until retiring in 1982. While in Florida, he was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and Buckhorn Springs Golf and Country Club. Survivors are his wife, Marjorie, of Valrico; a daughter, Barbara (Mark) Pearson of Dearborn Heights, Mich.; a son, William G. Batten of Phoenix, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Michelle and Michael Pearson of Dearborn Heights; and a sister, Beatrice Noyes of Milwaukee. She was born March 18, 1919, in Lawrence, Kansas, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Matelko) Hayon. When she was 8 years old, she and her family moved to Sheboygan. On July 8, 1943, she was married in Sheboygan to Julius Oliver Behnke. She was a dedicated homemaker and took great pride in having a close-knit family. She maintained a beautiful garden, was a gifted seamstress and knitter, and enjoyed baking and fishing. She was an active member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Sheboygan. In 1996 she moved to Hudson to be closer to family. Survivors are two daughters, Judy Ann (David) Gabrielse of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Barbara May (Keith) Avise of River Falls; seven grandchildren, Randy, Greg, Kevin, Steve and Dan Gabrielse and Roxanne and Rochelle Avise; and two great-granddaughters, Maria and Cierra. Preceding her in death were her husband, Oliver Behnke; and five brothers, Jim, Fritz, Charles, John and Bill. A visitation will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Sheboygan with an informal memorial service beginning at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Garden Cemetery. Dicke, 91, died Sept. 26, 2002 Dorothy Delores Dicke, 91, of Hudson, widow of the late Pastor Martin Dicke, died Thursday, Sept. 26, at the Christian Community Home in Hudson. She was born Oct. 11, 1910, in Merrill, the daughter of Charles F. and Johanna (Rusch) Hackbart, and attended elementary school at Trinity Lutheran School in Merrill prior to graduating from Merrill High School. She furthered her education when she graduated from Merrill Business College. On June 8, 1932, in Merrill, she was married to Pastor Martin Henry Dicke. She worked as a stenographer for the Merrill Candy Company before dedicating her time to being a homemaker and helpmate to her husband. She and her husband lived in Pinckneyville, Ill., where he served his first charge in the ministry and then later at Butternut. In 1955 the couple came to Hudson to make their home when Pastor Dicke accepted the call as pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, a post he held until his retirement in 1974. She held a strong faith and was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was a full partner to her husband's ministry. Surviving are three sons, Donald M. Dicke of Hartford, David (Carole) Dicke of Green Bay and Peter Dicke of Stillwater, Minn.; four daughters, Katherine (Thomas) Schnidewind of Watertown, Gretchen (Charles) Freehling of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Paula Dicke of Hudson and Julie (Douglas) Mastley of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; three daughters-in-law, Mary Dicke of Hudson, Sandy Dicke of Maplewood, Minn., and Joan Dicke of Milwaukee; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were a son, John Mark Dicke, in 1981 and her husband, Martin, in 1993. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hudson with Pastor Mark Tewes officiating. Gaynor, 79, died Sept. 29, 2002 Dr. Glen D. Gaynor, 79, of Hudson, a longtime civic leader, died of a heart condition Sunday, Sept. 29, at United Hospital in St. Paul. He was born Feb. 10, 1923, in Springbrook, Washburn County, the son of Lloyd and Anna (Neste) Gaynor. He was a graduate of Spooner High School in 1940 and of Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis, Mo., where he received a doctor of chiropractic degree. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy Air Corps in the early stages of World War II and served from 1942 to 1946 as an aviation flight instructor. On June 10, 1948, he was married to Gloria Toftness at Salem Lutheran Church in Shell Lake. In 1950 Dr. Gaynor opened his chiropractic office in downtown Hudson, where he served his patients until his retirement in 1979. His retirement did not stop his involvement in the community. He was a charter member and past president of the Hudson Rotary Club, the Wisconsin Chiropractic Association and the Hudson Chamber of Commerce. He was a founding board member of The Phipps Center for the Arts and a founding member and chairman of the board of the former State Bank of Hudson (now Wells Fargo Bank). Also he was a member of the American Legion in Springbrook and a former member of the Hudson Lodge of Elks, No. 640 (now defunct). He enjoyed playing golf or bridge with friends. He took great pride in the log home that he and his wife built in Springbrook. Whether fishing in the creek, deer hunting or spending time with his family, he cherished time spent at the cabin. Surviving are his wife, Gloria; a daughter, Kathleen (Adrian) Hendrickson of Westby; three sons, Jeffrey Gaynor of Fort Myers, Fla., Steven (Barbara) Gaynor of Fridley, Minn., and Richard (Patricia) Gaynor of Cottage Grove, Minn.; three sisters, Doris (Douglas) Thompson of Spooner, Alice Johnson of Rice Lake and Barbara Gaynor of New Richmond; and 10 grandchildren. Local funeral services were at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Hudson with Fr. John Rasmus officiating. At the service, organist Delores Willi accompanied the singing of Dr. Forest Toftness and Susan Hendrickson and the violin playing of Emily Hendrickson. A special brass ensemble performed comprised of Emily Hendrickson, Susan Hendrickson, Kaitlyn Gaynor, Curtis Gaynor, Megan Gaynor and Richard Gaynor. A second funeral service was at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Springbrook. Burial was in St. Luke's Cemetery, where casketbearers were Darrell Youngberg, Richard Mockler, Dr. Gerald Emholtz, Dr. Merlin Groskopp, Gregory Hendrickson, Curtis Gaynor, Douglas Thompson and David E. Cleveland. Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson. Wieser, 85, died Sept. 26, 2002 Jean Marguerite Wieser, 85, of Hudson died Thursday, Sept. 26, at the American Heritage Care Center in Hammond. She was born in Beloit Aug. 10, 1917, the daughter of Loran and Frances Cain, and graduated from Beloit High School and later attended business college. She was executive secretary for the U.S. Selective Service local draft board No. 62 in Beloit in Rock County. In February 1963 she was promoted and transferred to the local draft board for St. Croix County, at Hudson, located at 108 Walnut St., replacing Isabelle Kronstedt, who moved to California. She held her position until the office was closed some years later. In Hudson and St. Croix County she was familiarly known as "the draft lady." Her main recreation was bowling. She was a member for 45 years of the Wisconsin International Bowling Association and was instrumental in the River Falls Women's Bowing Association changing from the Minnesota affiliation to the Wisconsin group. She also was an avid golfer and a charter member of the Clifton Hollow Golf Club near River Falls. Her other hobbies and interests included sports, gardening, baking, knitting and traveling. While in Beloit she was Elks Lady. She was first married to Glen Corwin Macoy, and they were later divorced. On April 29, 1963, in Lakeland she married Gerald J. Wieser. Surviving is her husband, Gerald Wieser; her daughter, Susan Yvonne Moen of Hudson; three stepchildren, Robert (Diane) Wieser and Patricia Goddard, both of Beloit, and Nancy Wieser of Pennsylvania; and a sister, Arnette Yager of Milwaukee. Preceding her in death were her parents; a half-brother, Merle Cain; and a half-sister, Vera Stordock. A funeral service was at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the Bakken-Young Funeral Home in Hudson with Pastor Dennis Nelson of Bethel Lutheran Church officiating. Music was provided by Rick and Kris Swanson. A visitation was at 4:30-7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, at the Bakken-Young Funeral Home. She was born in Odell, Neb., Nov. 26, 1901, the daughter of the Rev. John and Anne (Soule) Bryant, and moved in 1904 with her family to Appleton, Colo. After graduating from Appleton High School in 1919 she attended Western State College in Gunnison, Colo., for two years and then taught art in Nogales, Ariz., for two years. She then attended Chicago Art Institute, where the received a bachelor's degree in art education. During that time she worked at Marshall Field's department store and ushered at Chicago Symphony Orchestra concerts. In 1927 she taught at Albion (Idaho) State Normal School, but returned to Illinois to teach art at Illinois State Normal University. It was there she met and married Walker DeMarquis Wyman in 1930. In 1932 they moved to River Falls, where Dr. Wyman joined the faculty at River Falls State Teachers College (now UW-River Falls). Helen Wyman later taught art in the River Falls public schools. The Wymans moved to Whitewater when Dr. Wyman became president of Wisconsin State University-Whitewater. In 1967, however, they returned to River Falls. After Dr. Wyman's retirement in 1978, they wintered in Green Valley, Ariz. She was a talented and popular artist and many of her works were commissioned both locally and nationally. She also illustrated a number of her husband's books. She was the last surviving founding member of the River Falls branch of the American Association of University Women, a group she helped organize in 1935. She was greatly interested in the environment, the Kinnickinnic River Land Trust, the Nature Conservancy and the Sierra Club. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Dr. Walker Wyman, in 1999; and three siblings. Surviving are two sons, John (Sandra) Wyman of Madison and Mark (Eva) Wyman of Normal, Ill.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service is planned at a later date at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in River Falls. While attending school, she began her career with 3M Co. in St. Paul. She later transferred from the parent company to the Imation Co., where she was the supervisor overseeing the fleet division's maintenance and records. In 1969, she was married to Krage Vindal in South Dakota and was later divorced. In 1984, she was married to Gerald Byrne in St. Paul, Minn. The couple lived in Oakdale and Woodbury for the majority of their married life. She was an avid arts and crafts hobbyist, enjoyed making quilts, painting, shopping for antiques and refinishing them. She especially enjoyed being with her family. Preceding her in death was a grandson, Carter Bradbury. Surviving are her husband, Jerry; her daughter from her first marriage, Jennifer (Jeremy) Bradbury of Andover, Minn.; a grandchild, Hayden Bradbury of Andover; her parents, Gordon and Jean Anderson of Hudson; and three brothers, Ronald (Patty) Anderson of Madison, Jeffrey (Pam) Anderson of Hudson and Bradley (Robin) Anderson of Pella, Iowa. He was born Oct. 30, 1909, in the town of Trimbelle, Pierce County, the son of Peter and Lena (Killian) Frye, and attended St. Francis Seminary in St. Francis through his sophomore year. On Nov. 28, 1935, in Bloomer, he was married to Lillian Siverling. During World War II he entered the U.S. Army in November 1943 and served with the 65th Infantry Division in Germany and was honorably discharged in February 1946. After the war he returned to Chippewa Falls and was employed by the A.C. Mason Co. and General Supply. Starting in 1950 he owned and operated Chippewa Auto Parts until his partial retirement in 1972, after which he worked part time at John's Auto Parts until he fully retired in 1994. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and conservationist and was the first to receive the Wisconsin Bowhunter Association's Life Time Achievement Award. He also was a member of the Chippewa Rod & Gun Club and edited its newsletter for more than 30 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He also was a member of Notre Dame Church. Survivors are four nephews, Howard, Herbert, Elton and Jerome Frye, all of Hudson, and his wife's nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Lillian; two brothers, Edmund and the Rev. Sylvester Frye; and a sister, Sister M. Rosalie. On June 30, 1945, in Indianapolis, Ind., he was married to Anne Tennant. After the war, in 1946, he attended the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and owned the Olson Piano Company in Indianapolis, Ind. He was a member of the Piano Tuners Guild and upon retiring was presented with an honorary lifetime membership in the organization. He also belonged to the Sons of Norway, Norwegian Society of Texas (Viking Chapter), Bethel Lutheran Church of Hudson, Reformed Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis and New Life Bible Fellowship in Dallas. He had been a resident of Dallas for 20 years and prior to that had lived in Indianapolis for 40 years. For 20 years, in Dallas, he volunteered at the Wycliffe Linguistic Center, keyboarding the Estonian Bible for printing. His hobbies included genealogical research, stamp collecting and music. Preceding him in death were his parents; his brother, Norman O. Olson, in 1996; and his first wife, Anne Tennant Olson. Survivors are his second wife, Ardella Olson of Dallas; a sister, Conni (Mary Ellen Olson) Winter of Indianapolis, three stepchildren, nine step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren. Wentlandt, 84, died Oct. 3, 2002 Quentin Wayne Wentlandt, 84, of North Hudson died unexpectedly, Thursday, Oct. 3, at Hudson Hospital after an apparent heart attack. He was born in Spring Valley, Pierce County, May 8, 1918, the son of Emil and Elva (Coon) Wentlandt, and attended school in Elmwood. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945 and had duty in the South Pacific, where he served with an amphibious tractor battalion on Luzon, Philippine Islands, and in New Guinea. After the war he returned to Hudson and resumed his position as a mechanic/salesman for Cuddebach Hardware Store in Hudson. Later he took a position as a master craftsman at the Port of Sunnyside Marine in Stillwater for 25 years and later at Trollen's Marine at Hudson and the Afton Marine. On April 2, 1942, in Riverside, Calif., he was married to Lorraine A. Swanson of Hudson, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Irving Swanson. He was a talented artisan and designer in both wood and metal. If a necessary marine item was not available commercially, he was able through his ingenuity to manufacture it himself. In his spare time he built a 28-foot, wood-hull cabin cruiser and a 32-foot, steel-hull cabin cruiser in his back yard, and launched them in the nearby St. Croix River. He also enjoyed hunting small boar and target shooting. Surviving are his wife, Lorraine; two daughters, Donna Mae (Gary) Shaffer of Lakewood, Colo., and Susan Ann (Melvin) Solsvig of Hudson; a special nephew, David (Hilda) Swanson of Hudson; three grandchildren, Tania, Monte and Cary; a great-granddaughter Ashley; two sisters, Ramona (Orv) Johnson of Hudson and Alicia (Ralph) Hoerth of Seattle, Wash.; and three brothers, Herbert of Milwaukee, Marshall and Sanford, both of Seattle. Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson with Pastor Joanne Sorenson officiating. Music was provided by Cheryl Forester.
