Thomas J. Lewis, 56 The Rev. Thomas J. Lewis, 56, of Woodbury, Minn., who formerly taught school in Hudson, died at home Saturday, May 17, after a two-year illness of Agent Orange-related lung cancer. Born in Wood Lake, Minn., he attended kindergarten through high school in Granite Falls, Minn., and then joined the U.S. Marines, serving in Vietnam. After leaving the military he attended California Lutheran Bible School, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and Fuller and Dubuque Theological Seminaries. He taught fourth grade in the Hudson Community Schools in 1976-1978 and decided to enter the ministry while working with young people at the First Presbyterian Church in Hudson. On Oct. 18, 1981, he was ordained at the First Presbyterian Church in Hudson by Elder Barbara Morris and the Rev. Mary McMillan for the Presbytery of the Twin City area, assisted by the Rev. Elmer Bates, pastor of the Hudson church. He served congregations in Montana, Wisconsin, South Dakota and Minnesota. Survivors are his wife, Carmen (Vinge) Lewis, and a daughter, Charissa, both of Woodbury; a son, Andrew John (Michelle) Lewis of Minneapolis; three brothers, the Rev. William (Joyce) Lewis of East Troy, Ron (Jean) Lewis of Monticello, Minn., and Jim (Kerry) Lewis of Durango, Colo.; a sister, Betty (Bob) Chadwell of Wausau; and his in-laws, the Rev. Daniel J. and Marie Vinge of Woodbury. His sister-in-law is Carol (Dr. David) Cumming of Hudson. Preceding him in death were his parents, W.B. and Elnora Lewis, and two nephews. A memorial service is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at the First Presbyterian Church, 535 20th Ave. N., South St. Paul, Minn. The family will greet friends two hours before the service at the church. Memorial donations are suggested in lieu of flowers. Anderson, 92 Virginia Anna Anderson, 92, a former resident of Hudson, died Thursday, May 22, in Seguin, Texas. She was born in St. Paul, Sept. 1, 1910, the daughter of Godfried E. and Bada Marie (Bjorkland) Hakonson. On April 4, 1933, in St. Paul, she was married to Arthur W. Anderson. She and her husband farmed and operated a grocery store in Stacy, Minn., until moving to Roseville, Minn., in 1942. Her husband later became a building contractor and they moved to Hudson in 1958. He did remodeling work and cabinetmaking before he retired in 1962. Their home was located on County Trunk UU, across the street from the present-day YMCA. For a number of years she was a part-time employee of the Hudson Flower Shop, then operated by Harriet I. Christianson. In 1992, she moved to Texas to be with her son, Dean. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Arthur Anderson, in 1984; a daughter, Joan Ambli, in 1971; and a daughter-in-law, Barbara (Peterfeso) Anderson, in 1982. Survivors are her son, Dean Ashley Anderson, of Seguin, Texas, two grandchildren, Donald Ambli of Vadnais Heights, Minn., and Judith Wilcox of Minneapolis, and four great-grandchildren. Willard P. Carr is my gg grandfather. Are you related to Willard? I have been trying to find his parents for years. The "Carr Familt Record" by Edson I. Carr, 1894, mentions Willard but I think it is full of mistakes. In the book it mentions that Carrie, his wife, died and he remarried. Willard died in 1899 and Carrie died in 1916.

She was born April 30, 1909, in Fort Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, the daughter of Jasper and Mary (Brandin) Tilton, and received her elementary schooling in Farmington, Minn. On May 22, 1937, she was married to Clinton Albert Lewis, who died in 1962. Later, on Feb. 16, 1963, she was married to Clarence J. Vier. Although a homemaker, she worked outside the home as a cook. Over the years she had been a cook at Minks Restaurant and the Spa, both in Hammond, and at Sam’s Restaurant in North Hudson. As an excellent cook, she made countless pies for family and friends. She also enjoyed playing cards and was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins. She was proud to have received an autographed photograph from Kirby Puckett, one of the great stars of the Twins. Surviving are two daughters, JoAnn Neubarth and Betty Evjen, both of Hudson; a granddaughter, Julie (Alan) Fenner of North Hudson; many grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren, Nathan and Annie Fenner. Preceding her in death was an infant son, Gary; her two husbands, Clinton Lewis, in 1962 and Clarence Vier, in 1978; six stepchildren, Ronald Lewis, James Lewis, Gaylord Lewis, Lorraine Loney, Bonnie Loida and Joyce Peterson; and nine siblings, Lorin Tilton, Joe Tilton, Bruce Tilton, John Tilton, Newton Tilton, Agnes Neuman, Joy Tilton, Mildred Lindenfelsen and Dorothy Tilton. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hudson with Pastor Fred Golke officiating. Visitation was at the church prior to the service. Later she attended McCahill Institute in Winona, Minn., for two years. On Feb. 10, 1931, she was married to Louis Kreye of Wabasha, Minn. The first years of their marriage they lived in Wabasha, but in 1939 they moved to Ellsworth, where they farmed for the next 46 years. In later years they were both employed by the Ellsworth school system. For the last 19 years, after the death of her husband, she has resided in River Falls. Surviving are four sons, Richard (Virgil) Kreye and Robert (Bernidine) Kreye, both of Red Wing, Minn., Donald (Beverly) Kreye of Marco Island, Fla., and Kenneth (Karen) Kreye of Hudson; two daughters, Sharon (Harold) Bischel of Apple Valley, Minn., and Margery (Alvin) Gross of Prescott; 19 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Lydia Berktold of Ellsworth and Leone Kreye of Wabasha. Preceding her in death were her husband, Louis Kreye, on Sept. 8, 1975; three brothers, Harry Berktold of Lake City, Bernard Berktold of Duluth, Minn., and Edward Berktold of Ellsworth; two sisters, Irma Gilson of California and Irene Rahr of Eau Claire; and one grandchild Steven Kreye, the son of Donald and Beverly Kreye. She also worked for U.S. Bedding Company (on the site of the former United Refrigerator Co. in Hudson in what is now Lakefront Park) until the firm moved back to St. Paul. On Nov. 4, 1939, at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in River Falls, she was married to Roy Conrad Johnson. The couple made their home in Hudson. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hudson, its Ladies Guild and the Home and School Association She loved reading and playing cards. Cooking was one of her greatest talents that she did for the family and many friends. Her children and grandchildren especially loved her poppyseed kolackis. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Roy, on May 10, 1966, and her brother, George Joseph Johnson, in 1953. Surviving are two daughters, Donna (Fred) Zimmerman of Hudson and Marlys (Dean) Hasz of Minnetonka, Minn.; two sons, Wayne J. (Rhonda) Johnson and Gerald G. (Jane) Johnson, both of Hudson; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Fr. Peter Szleszinski officiating. Music was provided by the Hope Choir and vocalist Adolphn D. Propps, who were accompanied by organist Elsie Sandquist. She died May 19, 2003. She is survived by her husband Jerry; children, Jason and Heidi; son-in-law Ross Smith; grandchildren, Dillion and Lilly; and other relatives. She was the former owner of Cullen Funeral Home and Furniture store in New Richmond and Here’s Ware Ceramics in Stillwater. Her motto was “Others Before Me” always. Funeral Mass is at 10 a.m. today (Thursday, May 22) at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, New Richmond. Visitation is one hour prior to service at the church.
