Zappa, Sr., 82 Ernie Lee Zappa, Sr., 82, of Rice Lake and formerly of Hudson, died Saturday, July 5 at Lakeview Medical Center in Rice Lake. He was born June 21, 1921, in Cumberland, the son of Angelo and Margaret (Moulett) Zappa. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. On April 15, 1944, he was married to Shirley Organ, who preceded him in death, March 16, 1978. He remarried on Aug. 2, 1980, Shirley Neely Howell, in Rice Lake. While living in Hudson, he was caretaker for many years of the homes of the Herman G. Erickson family. Surviving are his wife, Shirley Zappa of Rice Lake; a son, Ernest “Lee” (Betty) Zappa, Jr., of Clear Lake; two daughters, Gloria (Dan) Murray of Ladysmith and Susan Zappa of Hudson; a step-daughter, Andrea Howell of Milwaukee; three grandchildren; three brothers, Ralph and Charles Zappa, both of Cumberland and Richard Zappa of Brainerd, Minn., and four sisters, Angie Lauda and Lorraine Lasseigne, both of Riverside, Calif., Irene Haynes of Morton Grove, Ill., and Rose Bolin of Minneapolis. Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 9 at St. Anthony Abbot Catholic Church in Cumberland with Fr. Dennis Mullen officiating. Burial was in the St. Anthony Cemetery where pallbearers were Walt Organ, Jim Donatell, Jerry Organ, David Zappa, Jeff Zappa and Jerry Zappa. Graveside military rites were accorded by the Anderson-Thomson American Legion Post No. 98 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Preceding her in death were her husband Jack Zahler in 2001; a son, Kenneth James Zahler in 1978; a brother Arnold Venta; a sister Thelma Thompson and brothers-in-law Robert Thompson and James Kelly. Surviving are a son Gary Arnold Zahler of Dresser; two granddaughters Amanda and Jillian and their mother Jacqui; a sister, Lorraine Kelly of Robbinsdale, Minn., and a brother, Herbert Venta of Danbury. Swanson, 70 Beverly Jean (Flattum-Lemon) Swanson, 70, of St, Mary’s Point, Minn., died unexpectedly at her home, Saturday, June 28. She was born May 27, 1933, in St. Paul, grew up in Hudson and was raised by her mother, Florence Flattum and her grandparents, Gust and Martha (Gregerson) Flattum. She attended Hudson schools graduating from Hudson High School in the class of 1952. After finishing high school, she enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. On Oct. 29, 1955, she was Married to Edward A. Swanson of Rockford, Ill., at Bethel Lutheran Church in Hudson by the Rev. Oscar C. Thompson. The couple lived Rockford from 1955 until 1969 when they moved to St. Mary’s Point. She was a housewife while her children were growing up, but later she took employment with KP Hydraulics that later became the Toro Company in Hudson. She loved the fellowship of friends and enjoyed watching movies, shopping, taking pictures, and was an avid Vikings football fan (especially when they played the Packers). She also took great pleasure in her vast collection of doll and teddy bears. Most recently she has been caring for her husband Edward who has Alzheimer’s disease. Survivors are her husband Edward of St. Mary’s Point; a daughter Nadine (Stewart) Swanson-McKenna of Oakdale, Minn.; a son, Steven Scott Swanson of Seattle, Wash.; a brother, Richard (Myra) Lemon of Athens, Tenn.; a special cousin, Wanda (Marc) Plourde of Hudson; close friends, Merle Henningson, Frank C. Miller, and Mary (Willie) Thron. Preceding her in death were a son, Scott Edward Swanson (1958); her mother, Florence Lemon Yohn (1980); an aunt, Lucille Marie Miller(1994) and four uncles, Marvin C.(2000),Everett (l989), Herman E. (1944) and Robert Flattum (1956). The funeral service was at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 3, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Hudson with Pastor Joanne Sorenson officiating, At the service organist Layton James accompanied the vocalist Roberta Pominville. Burial was in Willow River Cemetery in Hudson where full military honors were provided by the Hudson Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No. 21l5. Casketbearers were Mike Plourde, Eric Plourde, Ryan Flattum, Taylor Flattum, Paul Johnson and Joe Carufel. Visitation was from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 2 at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson and one hour prior to the service at the church. Surviving are his children, Steven (Jean) Johnson of Hanover, Minn., Sandy (Rick) Pint of Grand Rapids, Minn., Shelly (Donald) Balsimo of Stillwater, Scott Johnson of Houlton and Jesse Johnson of Mountain Grove, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Tanya Rael, Andy Johnson, Heather Hauer, Valerie Bartkey, Travis Johnson, Matt Johnson, Avery Johnson and Amanda Johnson; a sister, Leona (Wilfred) Andrle of River Falls; and a brother, James (Mary Ann) Johnson of North Hudson. Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers, Gerald and Robert Johnson and a nephew Randy Johnson. A celebration of life will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 12, at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home chapel in Hudson with Fr. Peter Szleszinski officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. He died June 28 of bone cancer at the Shawnee Gardens Care Center in Shawnee, Kan. Vince graduated from Hammond High School, then joined the Navy. He served in the Navy from 1945-1949 and again from 1951-1953. After his service in the Navy, Vince went to work for IBM. He became a district manager, and retired in 1972. He was a resident of rural Grimes, Iowa for 22 years before moving to Branson, Mo. in 1994. She was born March 3, 1920, in River Falls, the daughter of Wallace and Lura (Aldrich) Smith, and was a graduate of River Falls High School. As a young woman, she worked at the original Malted Milk Shop in Hudson and as a secretary for Dr. Kenneth L. Brandt. Through her mother, she was a descendant of Dr. Philip Aldrich (1792-1858), one of the first pioneers in what is now Hudson. He arrived here as early as 1847 when Wisconsin was still a territory. He served on the first county board, was Hudson’s first postmaster and the first probate judge of this district of Wisconsin Territory. On May 16, 1941, in Hudson, Alice Smith was married to Gordon F. Evenson and they were divorced in 1960. A resident of Marquette since 1963, she worked for many years as a desk clerk at the former Northland Hotel (Landmark Inn) in Marquette. She was married Aug. 2, 1969, to Frank J. Tonella in Marquette and together they owned Tonella’s Funeral Home, where she assisted her husband until they both retired in 1986. She received much enjoyment from the friends and camaraderie she received at cardiac rehab at Marquette General Hospital, where she volunteered for 10 years. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. Surviving are one son, Frederick (Nancy) Evenson of Holt, Mich.; two daughters, Karen Johnson of Brandon, Fla., and Margaret “Peggy” Finger of Marquette; seven grandchildren, Scott (Jennifer) Johnson, Pam Johnson, Heidi Evenson, Daniel (Cathy) Evenson, Travis Evenson, Erin (Jim) Bowen and Jeff Finger; four great-grandsons, Jacob, Isaac, Matthew and Lukas; and an expected great-granddaughter, Grace; two sisters, Vycella Waxon and Olive (Leo) Crimmins, both of Hudson; and two brothers, Charles (Bev) Smith of Madison and Marlin (Meiko) Smith of Rockledge, Fla. Preceding her in death, besides her parents, were her husband, Frank Tonella, on April 18, 2001, and three sisters, Elwyn Waxon, Leora Mayer and Inez Boney. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, at Messiah Lutheran Church in Marquette with the Rev. Nancy Amacher officiating. Tollefson, 77 Sylvia Oletta Tollefson, 77, of Hudson, formerly of Eleva, died Saturday, June 21, at Regions Hospital in St. Paul. She was born June 21, 1926, in St. James, Minn., the daughter of Alfred and Helga (Olson) Hagen. On Oct. 30, 1948, in Eleva, she was married to William Tollefson. She was employed as a secretary and bookkeeper at Family Farms in Eleva for several years. In September 2001, she moved to Hudson to be closer to some of her children. She is survived by three daughters, Cynthia (Michael) Olson of Green Valley, Ariz., Bonnie (Glenn) Bonnes of Rochester, Minn., and Jean (Michael) Romundstad of Hudson; a son, Douglas (Sandy) Tollefson of Lakeland, Minn.; three sisters, Irene (Ernie) Bernloehr of St. James, Minn., Margaret Ryan of Mankato, Minn., and Addy (Roger) Howard of West St. Paul; seven grandchildren, Bradley Olson, Bryan Olson, Tim Bonnes, Andy Bonnes, Taya Cave, Cory Romundstad and Tessa Romundstad; and one great-grandson, Braeden Cave. Preceding her in death was her husband, William Tollefson, on July 26, 1988. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, at the Eleva Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kermit Solem officiating. Burial was in the Eleva Cemetery.
