Steffen, 70 Mary L. Steffen, 70, of Osceola died of cancer Wednesday, Aug. 27, at the Osceola Medical Center. She was born Aug. 15, 1933, in Ellsworth, the daughter of Frank and Leone Murphy. In 1955 she received a bachelor of science degree in physical education and biology at River Falls State Teachers College (now University of Wisconsin-River Falls). She taught school in both Sparta and St. Croix Falls. On Aug. 8, 1959, she was married to Philip Steffen and they settled eventually in Osceola to raise their family. She was a constant figure in the Osceola community as a substitue teacher, coach and athletics booster at Osceola High School until retirement last year and touched many lives during her 24 years there. She was active in her church as a lector, was previously an avid bowler and golfer and was a dedicated Twins and Vikings fan. She also enjoyed working in her yard and having coffee with her friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, and a brother, Robert (Connie) Murphy of Lone Rock. Survivors are her husband, Philip of Osceola; three daughters, Jane (Arvid) Maki of Osceola, Catherine (Greg) Brunsell of Madison and Nancy (Jeff) Craft of Ham Lake, Minn.; a son, Daniel P. (Heather) Steffen of Hudson; seven grandchildren, Carl, Derek, Justin, Alec, Mickenzie, Spencer, and Delaney; a brother, James (Joanne) Murphy of Stevensville, Mich.; and a sister, Rita J. Sorensen, 92 Mary A. Sorensen, 92, of North Hudson, and a resident of the Christian Community Home since February, died Thursday, Aug. 28, at Hudson Hospital. She was born Nov. 5, 1910, in Cumberland, the daughter of Joseph and Antonia (Schullo) Zezza, and came as a youngster to North Hudson with her parents. She attended St. Patrick’s Catholic School in Hudson. On Dec. 10, 1936, she was married to Leonard J. Sorensen at St. Patrick’s Catholic Rectory. She and her husband owned and operated Len’s Place in North Hudson from 1952 until his death in 1963. She later cared for her mother until her death in 1970. For many years she was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hudson. She enjoyed gardening and canning. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Leonard, in 1963; five brothers, Daniel, Anthony, Thomas, Lawrence “Skeeks,” and Joseph Jr.,; and two sisters, Lucille Bonnes and Madeline Garavalia. Survivors are a daughter, Ethel (James) Larson of North Hudson; two granddaughters, Nancy (David) Ray of Hudson and Mary Jane (Mark) Wang of Hudson; six great-grandchildren, Danielle (Christopher) Ledesma, Casandra (Cory) Peabody, Stephanie, Stacy, Jake and Nick Wang; one great-great grandson, Dakota Peabody; a brother, Louis (Betty) Zezza of North Hudson; and two sisters, Laura Lee of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Ann “Tina” McCunn of Neenah. Eleanor Petersen Nelson, 86 C. Eleanor Petersen Nelson, 86, of Edina, Minn., and formerly of Hudson, died at her home, Thursday, Aug. 28, after a short illness. She was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Dec. 25, 1916, the daughter of J. Harry and Bertha Estella (Newson) Flett, and attended River Bend School for Girls in Winnipeg. She graduated in 1939 from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, where she was a top athlete and lettered in numerous sports. On Nov. 18, 1939, in Winnipeg, she was married to Wendell Alfred Petersen. As newlyweds they moved to Hudson, her husband’s hometown, where he was an attorney. While in Hudson she was active in many organizations. She was president of the Hudson Women’s Club, president of the Hudson Hospital Auxiliary and served as chairman of the annual SnoBall. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the PEO Sisterhood, Chapter BJ. After the death of her husband, Wendell Petersen, in 1956, she continued to make Hudson her home. In 1961, at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, she was married to A. Herbert Nelson, a former Minnesota insurance commissioner and later president of Lutheran Brotherhood Insurance Co., in Minneapolis. In Minneapolis, she was active in the Minneapolis Woman’s Club for more than 20 years and the American-Swedish Institute. When the King of Sweden, Carl XVI Gustaf, made a two-day stay in Minneapolis, Mrs. Nelson was chairman in charge of decorations for the royal welcome at the Minneapolis Auditorium. She also was a past president of the St. Croix Yacht Club auxiliary. Preceding her in death, besides her parents and two husbands, Wendell Petersen and Herbert Nelson, were a brother, Harry J. Flett and two grandchildren, Scott Ellingson and Deborah (Foulke) Waldbillig. Survivors are two sons, Wendell A. Petersen Jr. of Lake Elmo, Minn., and A. Herbert “Skip” Nelson of Edina, Minn.; a daughter, Catherine (Dale) Feste of Minnetonka, Minn.; two stepdaughters, Patricia (Robert) Foulke of Lake George, N.Y., and Judy (David) Ellingson of Eden Prairie, Minn.; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. Burial will be in Willow River Cemetery in Hudson. Hunter, 87 Harold J. Hunter, 86, a prominent Roberts dairy farmer, died in his sleep at his home, Monday, Sept. 1. He was a lifelong dairy farmer in the town of Kinnickinnic on the farm property purchased in 1853 by his German immigrant grandfather, Christian Bonnes (1827-1900). He was born April 18, 1916, to James and Gertrude (Bonnes) Hunter. After he graduated from Hudson High School in 1932, he began farming with his father. In 1947, in St. Paul, he was married to Vivian Braem. During the 1940s and 1950s, he played saxophone with a popular area dance band called the Harold Hunter Orchestra and later the Blackhawks. He served a total of 27 years on three different school boards, the Oak Valley country school, Roberts and St. Croix Central. He was elected to the St. Croix Central board for 18 years, including the last 10 as president, stepping down in 1986. He also served for several years on the River Falls Creamery Board. The Hunter farm centered on registered Milking Shorthorn cattle. He was president of the Wisconsin Milking Shorthorn Association for eight years and a member of the state and national associations for more than half a century. Additionally, he served for many years on the board of the St. Croix Farm Bureau. He retired from milking cows at the age of 75. He and his wife, Vivian, were recognized this year at the Wisconsin State Fair in West Allis for owning a 150-year old farm. Surviving are his wife, Vivian of Roberts; a son, James C. Hunter of Chico, Calif.; and a daughter, Kathleen Louise “Kathy” Hunter of Hudson; also surviving is his sister, Helen Haugen of St. Paul; and seven nieces and nephews. Services are at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at Ezekiel Lutheran Church in River Falls, with burial in the German Settlement Cemetery in the town of Troy. Zientara, 89 Jan. 25, 1914-Aug. 31, 2003 Anton John Zientara, a resident of the Chicago suburb of Cicero, Ill., died Aug. 31 in Berwyn, Ill. He was born Jan. 25, 1914, the son of Anton J. (senior) and Anna (Lassa) Zientara, and grew up on the North Side of Chicago, graduating from Lane Technical High School in 1932. He and the former Therese Wyka were united in marriage in November of 1947. They purchased a home in the Chicago suburb of Cicero and raised a family of three sons. In 1935, Zientara became employed at Western Electric Co. at its Hawthorn Works plant in Cicero, and he spent a 44-year career there, first as a tool and die worker and, after later training, in machine construction in several of the company’s telephone manufacturing plants. During World War II, he and other skilled machinists at the Hawthorn Works plant built and/or maintained radar equipment for the United States Armed Forces. After the war, Zientara was involved in building and maintaining guidance equipment for the Nike missile system. He left Western Electric in 1979 and spent his retirement enjoying his family, traveling, bowling and golfing. His favorite pastimes included following the Chicago Cubs and Bears, and studying American history, especially the Lewis and Clark expedition. While his sons were growing up, he enjoyed family vacations at Lake Tomahawk, Wis., in Oneida County, and, later, at Lake Wapogasset, near Amery. Survivors include his wife, Therese; sons Robert (Beverly) of New Richmond, Gary (Janet) of Elgin, Ill., and James (Dorothy), also of Elgin; his brother, Stanley, and sister, Louise, both of Chicago; three grandchildren, Benjamin (Minneapolis, Minn.), Sharon (St. Paul, Minn.) and Daniel, New Richmond, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Anna, and a sister, Mildred Hansen. Visitation was Wednesday, Sept. 3, at Sourek Funeral Home in Cicero. William was born Oct. 2, 1924 in Guttenberg, Iowa, the son of Truman and Emily (Bedward) Webster. At the age of four, he moved with his family to the town of Pershing, Taylor County, where he grew up and attended area schools. He then entered the U. S. Army and served his country from 1945-1946. Upon returning home, he was united in marriage to Charlotte Nelson on Aug. 3, 1947 in Donald at the Wisconsin Rural Mission Church. They first resided in the Donald area and later moved to the Iron Range in northern Minnesota where he worked as an electrician for Commonwealth Edison. In 1965 they moved to Somerset, where they have resided since. Bill retired in 1987 from the Local 110 electrical workers union. Bill had a great love for his family, fishing, woodworking, cooking maple syrup, deer hunting, gardening and the great outdoors. He was well known for his ability to fix just about anything. He is survived by his wife Charlotte; daughter, Sharon (Pete) Peterson of Scandia, Minn., Nancy (Bill) Klein of Hugo, Minn.; sons, William R. of Medford, Jim (Lori) of Dresser and Philip of Somerset; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy (Billy) Sanders of Cottage Hills, Ill.; and brother-in-law Arild Steen of Gilman; nieces; nephews; many cousins and friends and one uncle, Dick Bedward of Prairie du Chien. He is preceded in death by his parents, Truman and Emily Webster of Gilman, sister E. Faye Steen of Gilman and brother Sonny of Prairie du Chien. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., Friday, Aug. 1, 2003 at the Plombon Funeral Chapel in Gilman. Visitation was from 1-3 p.m. prior to the service. Gary was born on Oct.14, 1956 in Port Washington, Wis., the son of Arthur and Jean (Thierfelder) Sachse. He attended elementary school in Hartford, Wis. prior to graduating from New Richmond High School in the class of 1975. Following this, he furthered his education by receiving a degree in business and finance from the University of Minnesota. On Feb. 23, 1985, he was united in marriage to Tammy Buesing in New Richmond. Gary worked for Paine Webber as a financial advisor. Earlier, he worked in sales for Menomonie Motors. Gary had a great vision in business and applied his knowledge as he served as past president of the St. Croix County GOP. Gary was also active in the community and was instrumental in raising funds for the new Hudson Hospital and other community funds. He served on the Troy Township Zoning Board and Planning Commission and was an active member of the United Methodist Church. He was an avid billiard enthusiast, enjoyed skiing, snorkeling, and carpentry. He was a member of the PG’s Friday lunch group. Gary is survived by his wife Tammy; daughters, Rani and Mari; parents Arthur and Jean Sachse of New Richmond; siblings Sharon Sachse of Minneapolis, Janet (Dick) Gillis of New Richmond, Laura (Ronald) Shiue of Vadnais Heights, Minn., Brian Sachse of Calif., Christopher (Amy) Sachse of Woodbury; fourteen nieces and nephews; father/mother-in-law Robert (Janice) Buesing of Menomonie; sisters-in-law Teri (Dan) Swingle of Burnsville, Minn., Tracey (Tony) Korish of Portage, Wis.; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Funeral service for Gary Sachse was 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29 at the United Methodist Church in Hudson with Pastor Henry Dreistadt officiating. Music was provided by John and Jodell Krause. Interment was private. Active casketbearers are Tom Hoel, Kirk Lindell, Peter Gillis, Tim Peters, Robert Gillis, and Nathaniel Meyer. Honorary casketbearers were George Hoel and Will Savage. Visitation will be Friday from 11 a.m. until the 2 p.m. service time at church. Memorials are preferred to the Hudson Memorial Foundation in lieu of flowers. Potter, 58 Nov. 4, 1944 - Aug. 27, 2003 Daniel G. Potter of Star Prairie died Wednesday, Aug. 27 at home. He was born Nov. 4, 1944 in New Richmond. He graduated from New Richmond High School in 1962 and married Jean Milliron on July 2, 1963. Daniel worked for the Connolly Shoe Company in Stillwater, Minn. and was a line operator at Gould National Battery in St. Paul, Minn. He retired from Andersen Windows, Bayport, Minn., in 1999 after 30 years. He loved fishing, traveling, and playing cards. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lauren and Bernice Potter. Daniel is survived by his wife Jean; daughters, Kim (Joe) Johnson, Michelle (Brad) Tarman, Denice (Wade) Swiggum, Jenifer (Brad) Radinzel, Amy (Rick) Johnson; 14 grandchildren; sister Judy (Karl) Nelson; brother Donald (Penny) Potter; special friend Lenny Erickson; also many nieces and nephews.
