Valatie, N.Y., June 2, 2011 Brother Edward Wisniewski, C.S.C. a resident of St. Joseph Center in Valatie, died this morning at Albany Medical Center after a long illness. Brother Edward was 78 years old and had been a professed member of the Congregation of the Holy Cross for 47 years. Edward Francis Wisniewski was born in Erie, Pa. on June 1, 1933, the third of five children of Theophil and Wanda (Jaglowski) Wisniewski. The Wisniewski family were communicants in Erie's parish of St. Stanislaus. Edward's elementary education was pursued at St. Stanislaus School from which he was graduated in 1950. He spent a year at Erie's Wilson Junior High School before transferring to Erie Technical High School, from which he graduated in 1954. Military service followed his high school education, serving in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956 and receiving an honorable discharge. Before entering religious life, he was employed as a mail carrier by the U.S. Postal Service and as a sheet metal worker by the General Electric Company. Edward entered the Congregation of the Holy Cross at St. Joseph Juniorate, Valatie as a candidate for the Brotherhood on June 23, 1962. He received the habit of a Holy Cross Brother at St. Joseph Novitiate, Valatie on August 22, 1962. He made his profession of temporary vows on January 26, 1964 and his perpetual profession on August 22,1967. During his active ministry, Brother Edward did maintenance work in various apostolates of the Brothers of Holy Cross ! in N.Y., Conn., R.I., and Md. He was especially adept in cabinet making and the results of his skills may be found in the schools in which he worked. Brother Edward retired from active ministry in 1989 and devoted the remainder of his life to volunteering and the Ministry of Prayer. He received commendations for his volunteer work from St. Raphael's Hospital in New Haven, Conn., the West Haven, Conn. Nursing Home, The Association of Retarded Citizens of Monroe County, N.Y., and the Literacy Volunteers of America. He moved to St. Joseph Center in Valatie in 1996. A viewing and wake service will be held in the chapel of St. Joseph Center in Valatie on Monday, June 6 at 7 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the same chapel at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 7. Interment will follow immediately in the Holy Cross Community Cemetery on the grounds of St. Joseph Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Joseph Center Retirement Fund.
