Author: JacobHaLevi Surnames: Wisniewski, Trok, Trock Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wisniewski/191.2.1.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My mother is Jewish, and her grandparent's came straight over from eastern Poland and Lithuania, so I have a particular interest in researching Jewish ancestry on my father's side, plus I am only a few classes away from my Master's in Judaic Studies and Hebrew, where I particularly study Ashkenazi Jewry. Two of my father's family names, Uzarski and my surname, Kubasiak, I have done genetic dna testing and found Ashkenazi markers, and on both of the tests it came out showing significant amounts of Ashkenazi Levite markers, even though they too, had "Catholic" records in Prussia. An actually, the Uzarski test matched my mother's brother's test, Reda, as sharing a common grandfather within the last 500-1000 years ago, and I know THAT side was Jewish. I have exchanged emails with Hoffman, and I'm sorry to say, but he's wrong about the Jews coming from the west. When they did multiply amounts of genetic dna testing on the Jews particularly, they found that the vast majority of ! Ashkenazi Jewry emigrated from the east to the west. They came from the land of the Khazars, which was in southern Russia between the Black and Caspian Sea. A guy Arthur Koestler did very research in his book, "The Thirteenth Tribe", which talks all about it. The vast majority of Ashkenazi Jews today share the same haplogroups with the people's today that are indigenous to the Caucasus. Hoffman can give his "cherry tree" definition all he wants to the name Wisniewski, but in reality it most likely originated from an area in Belarus called Vishnevo, close to Minsk, that was close to being 100% Jewish, it was basically a Jewish community, so I can guarantee that if we had a male Wisniewski that would be willing to do the test then there would be a significant amount of Ashkenazi markers that would show up. Here are two websites where you can read about Vishnevo: http://www.eilatgordinlevitan.com/vishnevo/vishnevo.html and http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/vishnevo/vis! hnevo.html So yes, I think it is very possible that your family name Jacek or Jacki is Jewish. I, too, am actually familiar with Gorzyce, since my ggg grandparent's Kubasiak married in Gorzyce in 1867. Kubasiak was one of the tests I had done showing Ashkenazi Levite lineage. The name actually originated more from Slovakia/Galicia, where a massive amount of Jews had lived, and translated, it means, "son of Kuba (or Jacob)." Their names were Michael Kubasiak and Josefa Lewandowski. His parent's names were Simon Kubasiak and Catherine Pawlowicz. Her parent's names were Andrew Lewandowski and Salomea Kruszka, and many other of their children's spouses also had very Jewish names. So you can't get much more Jewish than that! Jews started emigrating into Poland and Germany starting in the 1300's and reaching it's zenith in 1790's when Catherine the so called Great forced all the Jews out of Russia into the Pale of Settlement. Life in the Pale was very hard, and already by the late 1! 700 to early 1800's Jews were emigrating in mass numbers to the west, to Prussia, Germany, and eventually the US to seek a better economic life. The areas of Galicia, Russia Poland, and Lithuania had the highest concentration of Jews than any area of the world. Unfortuneatly, most Jews in the Pale identified themselves more as being Jewish culturally than religiously, much like a Catholic that only attends mass on Easter and Christmas, and so after they had emigrated into the west and the Catholic and Lutheran churches made it very hard on Jews that didn't "register" with them, then that's when most of them began the assimilation process. Afterall, it was much easier to give up one's cultural identification than it would be for a person to give up their religious convictions. And the churches also held Jewish and civil records for the State in Prussia and Germany. So for a little bit of "freedom" and "equality", most Jews registered a marriage and baptism in one of the! local churches. This all began in the early 1700's in Germany by a J ew named Moses Mendelssohn, who began the "Haskala" movement. It called for Jewish assimilation into either the Polish or German culture, and in most cases, conversion. And this movement spread in Germany/Prussia like a wildfire. Between 1800-1810 alone, 10% of all German Jews converted. Here is a couple sites on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haskalah, and http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Judaism/Haskalah.html. I was quite shocked when I discovered all this, and excuse my resentment, but the "lies" the Catholic church has told us all these generations about these Jewish "converts," who weren't really converts, they simply just registered. Yes I do recognize those books. There is also another very good dictionary on German Jewish names that a guy named Lars Menk has researched and you can find him on this website: http://www.avotaynu.com/books/Menk.htm. In his list are found these names: Trittinger . Trockenbrod . Trockenbrodt . Trommler . van der Wall . von der Wall . Wallace . Wallach . Wallau . Wallauer . Brisk . Briske . Brisker . Britenstool . de Brito . Brito . Brittenstool . Brittfeld . de Britto . . Just . Justin . Jütel . Laubheimer . Lauchheimer . Laudenbacher . . Roth . Rothbauer . Rothahn . Rothan . Rothauer . Rothaus . Rothausen . Rothbart . Rothbarth . Rothberg . Rothe . . Wischnewski . Wischniewski . Wischnitz . Wise . Wisebart . Wiseman . Wisloch . Wislocher . Wismuth . Wisniewski . Wisniewsky . Wisnitzer . Wispach . Wissbach . Wissbader . Wissbrun . Wissenau . Wisslar . Wissler . Wissner . Wiszniewski . Wisznitz . I do know that Wirsitz had a significant Jewish community and there's sti! ll a standing synagogue there to this day. Some of the other names listed on that census sheet: Job is definitely Jewish, Britt is a Hebrew word meaning "to cut", and it is a word we used for the term, "covenant." When 8 day old boys recieve circumcision it is called a "Brit Milah," or in Yiddish it's called a "brisk" or "bris." Bobkiewitz I know is Jewish, whether it was Bobkiewitz or Bobkiewicz. Jews used the ending -wicz even more than -ski. Part of "Braseder's" name is the Hebrew word we use, "seder", which is what we call our Passover dinner, and it also comes from the Hebrew word, "siddur", which means, "order." The Siddur is what we call our prayer book. "Order of Service." And Salomea Bobkiewitz, Salomea is just a feminine form of "Solomon", or "Shalom." This was definitely a Jewish neighborhood, even if they were "Catholic Jews." After 4 or 5 generations of going through the Catholic motions the Jewish memories and traditions slowly start to filter out. Sad but true. That's enough for now lol, let me know your thoughts. Shalom, ~Jacob Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: janjer7 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wisniewski/191.2.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Sorry it has taken so long to answer. I lost internet service for almost a week. I haven't heard anything about my ancestors being Jewish. But I will not be surprised if I do because I have read that if a person has Polish ancestry they are very likely to have Jewish ancestry. The earliest records I have accessed are the Catholic church records in the later part of 1700, thanks to the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. I did have the impression that a number of Jews became Christian in the early 1800s but was unaware that there was a movement called the "Haskala". Did they really convert or were they in church records because the government records were collected through the churches? The church records in some parishes even noted if a man had done his military service. That information was requested by the government. I can see where marrying a Christian separated the Jew from his family and unintentionally the new family lost their traditions. I am i! nterested in learning more about Haskala. My cousin was told a direct ancestor in his father's line was believed to be Jewish and took his wife's surname to inherit land. His name was Bartholomew Calczjak (other spellings are possible). His wife was Agnes Jaskowna on one record. They married in the late 1700s in the parish of Gorczye, Znin, Posen. Their surname was recorded Jacek or Jacki. Their son Karl, born in 1802 and lived in Dochanowo, Bydgoszcz, Posen used Jacek. Do you think this could be correct? The 1880 census is difficult to read in that the census takers were absolutely unfamiliar with Polish names. Jacob Trok on the 1880 census, was a son of Adalbert and Franciska Durecki Trok and brother of Antonina Trok Wisniewski. If you note the 1900 census takers they were not Polish-Americans either, so the spellings are very far off. Jacob Trok and his second wife, Anastasia nee Wargin had children, Klemens, Wladislaus(Ladislaus), Heronium (becomes either Jerome or Harry in the U.S.), Louis, Victor, William, Isadore, Edmund, Kasimir and Sylvester -- not in that order. These were all names popular among the Polish immigrants. Anastasia was listed as Anna on the 1920 Census for the family in Chicago. The descendants of Jacob Trok and his brother, Anton Trok use the name Trock. This makes research harder since those families whose name was Trock when they immigrated come from Sweden. Victor and Antonina Trok Wisniewski were using Wisniewski in church records in La Salle and in all records in Washington County, IL. Government records in La Salle looked as if the recorders gave up trying to understand the immigrants' accents. I have frequently seen witz or wicz used intead of ski by record keepers who are familiar with those endings. Washington County did have Russian Poles who used witz and wicz all the time. I am related to almost all of the early Wallochs in La Salle/Peru. I trace them back to Martin & Regina (nee Kleczkowska) Waloch of Tlukom & Czajcze (Wissek Parish) in the mid to late 1700s. Over the years the records throughout the Wisitz area had many variations of the spelling of their surname. The surname became Walloch & Wallock in the U.S. Another Walloch researcher, Daryl Tesar told me the Waloch family came from Pomerania in the early 1700s after being forced out by land disputes. Daryl Tesar has done extensive research on the surname and seems to have identified three unrelated Waloch families in the Wirsitz district. She actually found a Walloch recorded as Wacholz. Bobkiewitz became Bobkiewicz and they immigrated from the Sroda District of Posen and became well known in La Salle. Shirkirka was actually Siekierka and all of the Siekierkas in La Salle County, Illinois immigrated from the Wirsitz district, having descended from Stanislaus Siekierka of Tlukum, who was born in 1789 in Wissek. Some are related to my ancestors. Jacoshinsky was a very bad spelling of Jagodzinski, another family from the Wirsitz district. Shaunesey was among the Irish wave of immigrants, who came to work the mines and build the railroads and canals around La Salle. The Irish immigrants came to La Salle before the Polish immigrants. The German immigrants were already well established in La Salle and I believe that's what the other names in your list represented. But that doesn't say the names aren't also Jewish in origin. I wish the immigrants did record about their origins but so many were illiterate and what time and energy they had was used for surviving. Since assimilation often meant survival to our ancestors, they did not encourage talking about their past. Also parents often died too young to pass on family history, So much is lost to us. That's why I appreciate the bits and pieces you have added and your questioning of the origins of surnames. Research is showing that if we could go back far enough we are all related. Have you ever seen the the books edited by William F. Hoffman of the Polish Genealogy Society of America. He has done a wonderful job of noting the origins of familiar Polish-American first names and surnames. He claims it is impossible to list all the names since earlier attempts and his sources comprised sets of books numbering in the dozens. He mentioned that the Jews came to the German lands in the Middle Ages and moved east to Poland to escape persecution. Therefore many Polish names are of Jewish origin. One of his notes suggests that Waloch could be a derivitive of Walenty. Among his sources he lists: Alexander Bieder, A Dictionary of Jewish Surnames from the Kingdom of poland; Rabbi Shmuel Gorr, Jewish Personal Name; B. Kaganoff, A Dictionary of Jewish Names and Their History. I do find the origins of names fascinating.Time for me to stop. In order to really find Jewish records (if possible) we would have to find records PRIOR to their emigration to Prussia, probably anywhere from the last 1700's-mid 1800's. There was a Jewish movement in Prussia/Germany called the "Haskala" that called for assimilation, and in most cases, conversion of the Jews to either Catholicism or Lutheranism, and the movement was big. Between 1800-1810 alone 10% of all Jews from Germany converted. Radom, Poland was a huge Jewish center in the east, and it was a place of Jewish learning. They had many many synagogues and yeshiva's, and the city itself in 1900 was about 80-90% Jewish. No coincidence, and I have no doubts there were "church registries" of marriages and baptisms in Glesno, that was typical Haskala. Usually in the east Jews remained Jews, and they knew the sacrifices they would have to make by emigrating west. I was able to look up census records for Trok in I! llinois, and here's what I found: 1880 Federal Census La Salle, La Salle, Illinois Jacob Trock 28 Victor Wiznesky (Jewish spelling btw) 34 Antonia Wiznesky 22 Franziska 2 Thomas 1 Franziska 50 Some of the neighbors that lived around them were: Braseder Bobkiewitz Britt Hoeren Jacoshinsky Job Just Lauch Rothy Shaunesey Sherkirka Walloch The neighborhood looks a lot more Jewish than Polish. 1910 Federal Census Chicago Ward 8, Cook, Illinois Jacob Trock 44 Anestarin 40 Ladis 16 Alz 14 Victor 12 Kiamer 10 Isador 7 Anestarin, Ladis, Alz, and Kiamer look quite Yiddish. Other Trock's and Trok's I found were: Samuel, Herman, Sarah, Amos, Abraham, Chote, Pearl, Max, Hannah, Aaron, David, Ruth, just to name a few, just all in Illinois. What have you heard about the Jewish connection? With all this, and many many other names I found related to Wisniewski's out of Glesno I think it is quite compelling. ~Jacob Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I didn't come across your Michael & Catherine but I also did not find the marriage record of Victor & Antonina. I don't know where Antonina's parents, Adalbert & Francisca (Durecki)Trok were married but have found the records of the baptisms of some of their children in the Glesno Catholic parish with Glesno as the place of residence. A death record for one Trok child in Glesno noted she was born in Debowo abt 1856. So maybe I need to look there for their marriage. (That's northeast of Sadki.) Antonina's godmother was Franciska Niedzewielzlka, virgo of Glesnenses. So apparently there is a connection. I found this immigration record which appears to be Victor & Antonina and Adalbert. All of them went to La Salle County, Illinois, either the city of La Salle or Peru. They immigrated first to La Salle County, Illinois where several relatives of the Troks went. Their son, Anton Trok arrived before 1875. There were several Wisniewskis there also that I couldn't connect them but since those immigrants to La Salle in that time period came from Wirsitz it is likely they are family. I'm aware of the Jewish possibility but haven't found any record to indicate it. The marriage records often noted it but I haven't found the marriage records. I found the baptisms of six children of Adalbert and Franciska Trok in Glesno and the death of a two year old daughter in 1871 in Komorowo in the Krostkowo parish. I couldn't find the children of Victor & Antonina Wisniewski baptised in Poland. They lived in Peru, IL. first and had children baptised at St. Hyacinth in La Salle. They all moved to Radom, Washington, IL. between 1884 & 1887. Francisca Durecki Trok was a sister of my great-great-grandmother Magdalena Durecki Wachowski of Kraczki. I have childhood memories of Nick Wisniewski, a son of Victor & Antonina Durecki Wisniewski. I would be interested to see if there is a connection. She also had 5 siblings: Aurela, Frank, Annette, Richard, and Ewaryst Jr.. Richard is 80 yrs old and living. However, Aurela and Frank were Ewaryst's children with his first wife who died around 1915. Most of the family eventually settled in Detroit. Can anyone confirm the veracity of the information I have for this family? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
