I just read your 23 JUN 2009 message! I knew that conversions were being "encouraged" by the Catholics, but didn't know that much of this just done for registration purposes. I would be interested to know more. My maternal side of the family come from Galicia. My paternal side from the eastern side of Poland. My grandparents (both sides) immigrated here in the early 1900s. I was born in Hamtramck Michigan, and was raised strict Catholic there. I moved to California some 30 years ago for graduate school and ended up staying there. I married a Jewish man. We were married in a "Jewish/Catholic" ceremony, and we are raising our children Jewish but in the Reform tradition in order for them to be defined as Jewish. He came to US (Carrollton Twp, MI) in 1884 with his wife Veronika (married in Poland in 1882) and infant son Josef. His death certificate list his country of birth as Germany (also for his parents, but his nationality was Polish - thus, then German area of now Poland) and father's name as Math. and his mother's name as Catherine Wirtz (as best I can read by the handwriting). Also, the family was Catholic. Am seeking to learn what city/town/village from which they came and whether any relatives (by now probably 3rd cousins) exist. They applied for their license on 12/27/1898. Could this be them? If so, the paperwork will be on file at the county courthouse. I've pulled entries from there before. It's pretty easy. Another good resource for Westmoreland County is the Tribune Review archives online since about 1990. There was a few Wasniewski's listed but not many. http://library.tribweb.com/interconnect/intercon.dll for items from 1990 through 2001 http://www.pittsburghlive.com for stuff from 2001 through the present. BTW, my GGF was Franciszek Jozef Wisniewski, son of Franciszek and Wladyslawy Toronskich Wisniewski, born in 1886 in Tartaku near Warsaw.
