Surnames: wisniewski, opalewski, grohowska Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/UEXBAIB/179.1 Message Board Post: What a coincidence! Our Polish great-great grandparents both have the same surnames. My great-great grandfather was Thomas Opalewski and my great-great grandmother was Flora Wisniewski. They also lived in Detroit. Opalewski is an uncommon name, so it is very possible that your Frank & my Thomas could be brothers or at least cousins. Thomas' parents were John Opalewski and Maria Grohowska. Flora's parents were John Wisniewski and Dorothea___. Do you know where your Wisniewski/Opalewski ancestors lived in Detroit? I looked in the Detroit City directories: in the early 1890s Thomas Opalewski lived at 118 Superior, with a John, Michael, William, and Kunegunda Opalewski. Flora Wisniewska lived at 311 Alexandrine Ave.E. with a John and Michael. It would be interesting to know if your ancestors were neighbors. Does any of this ring a bell?

    1. [WISNIEWSKI] new list admin
    2. Hello, listers, I am the new administrator for this mailing list. My interest in the Wisniewski surname stems from my great-grandmother, Antonina Wisniewski. Antonina was born 13 June 1874 somewhere in Poland. The one and only reference I have found thus far that names her place of birth states Radomnice, Poland. Of course, I cannot locate a Radomnice and suspect it is a misspelling for either Radomice or Radonice. Her parents were Jan Wisniewski and Weronika Ostrowska. I do not know if her parents came to the US or remained in Poland. Antonina married Antoni Kozlowski in Newark, New Jersey, USA on 9 July 1899 at St. Stanislaw RC Church. They had two children: Anthony (my grandfather) and Adolf. The family moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania sometime before 1920. Regards, Marie Dallas

    3. I am looking for a Josephine/Jozefa Wizniewski who was the godmother to several of my great-uncles around 1906-1912 timeframe in the Long Island, NY area. She would have had to be at least 18 & be Roman Catholic at that time. Any chance this is the same family?? I am assuming Jozefa was a close friend/relative of my Aoyciek/Albert Wozniak family, who came from Poland to NYC in 1900.
