    3. For those of you who don't know: The Kathleen Gariety killed in Yemin had Mitchell, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin ties. Below is the press release from The Milwaukee Sentinel and a shortened family tree created by Mrs. Lorraine (Gariety) Richtig Associated Press Published Dec. 30, 2002 GAR31 MILWAUKEE - Kathleen Gariety's family had tried to persuade her to stay in Wisconsin this summer, but the Baptist aid worker from suburban Wauwatosa had insisted on returning to Yemen. Gariety, 53, was among three Americans shot and killed Monday by a suspected Muslim extremist at the Yemeni hospital where they worked. ``We tried hard to get her to stay home,'' said her brother, Jerome J. Gariety Jr. of Colgate. ``She wouldn't hear of that.'' His sister's work and her love for the local children she helped there gave her reason to return, he said. Gariety was killed when an attacker entered a room in the hospital where she was meeting with other workers, according to the Southern Baptist International Mission Board. Also killed were hospital director William Koehn, 60, of Arlington, Texas, and Dr. Martha Myers, 57, of Montgomery, Ala. Gariety's sister, Mary Naylor of Oconomowoc, said she always feared something would happen to her sister in Yemen, but she had worried it would take place outside the hospital compound. ``It's just so hard to believe - not unexpected, but hard,'' Naylor said. The family last saw Gariety for six weeks during the summer, when they tried hard to get her to remain in Wisconsin. Gariety, born and raised a Catholic, had once thought of becoming a nun. Instead, she became a Baptist in the 1980s after meeting a minister in Michigan, where she managed a college bookstore, her family said. She joined the Southern Baptist International Mission Board in 1992 and was assigned to the Jibla Baptist Hospital in southern Yemen later that year as a purchasing agent. The family worried for her safety but understood her desire to undertake the aid work. ``She really felt fulfilled in her life,'' Jerome Gariety said. ``This is where the Lord wanted her, and He comes number one.'' Kathleen Gariety graduated from Pius High School in the Milwaukee area in 1967. According to the Pius XI Journal, the school's yearbook, she was involved in Mission Club, Future Teachers of America and the Pep Club, said Chris Schulteis, the school's director of institutional advancement. Gariety earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in art in 1972 from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, said Karla Ashenhurst, a spokeswoman for the college. Gariety did some graduate work at the university over three or four semesters ``here and there'' but did not finish her master's degree, Ashenhurst said.
