Good timing! Just got an eMail yesterday for records check of a possible relative that served in the New York 5th Volunteer Regiment. The webmaster of their site provided the following address to me for accessing the Union Military Records of the Civil War: www.nara.gov By the way, mine was listed as M.I.A. in March of 1865, a P.O.W. on April 6th of 1865 and released from duty (mustered out) on the 13 of April of 1865, then turned up in Huron County Michigan in the late 1890's. Not sure exactly what is on this site. I think it has links to their various documents that they mail to you, you fill them out as best you can and then snail mail them back. No idea the length of time involved for retrieval of information, if they have any. Don't know how many of you would be interested in this site. It is for German Soldier war deaths of WW1 and WW2: www.volksbund.de I was able to find the oldest brother of my mother, that died in 1915, in Ypres, Belgium from the effects of a mustard gas attack. Gave everything right down to line number, plot number and grave number of where my uncle is buried. You should have some knowledge of the German language or a quick access German-American dictionary close. There is an online page asking you why you are accessing, what relationship the individual is etc. Downside is that I keep getting brochures in the mail (In German), asking for donations so they can continue their research-work in finding more graves. He was from Plymouth, Sheboygan County, WI and I was wondering if there is a separate cemetery in Plymouth or elsewhere in the county where the veterans were buried? I would love to be able to find his gravesite. Would his death/cemetery information be listed anywhere else? Would there be a death certificate filed in Sheboygan County or would this information be listed in his Pension File? This is the first time I have had to research a veteran so any help and direction would be greatly appreciate. > Regards > Linda Wright > > > ============================== > Visit Ancestry.com for a FREE 14-Day Trial and enjoy access to the #1 > Source for Family History Online.
