I guess I'll also have to put in my two cents. After doing Genealogy for close to six years, and all the sites, queries, obits, bio's, dead ends etc., the Sheboygan site is still above and beyond most everything out there. By the way, this also includes the Sheboygan County Historical Society in Sheboygan Falls. Online sites and local historical societies are only as successful and the people that V O L U N T E E R to spend hours and hours of their time that could be spent doing other things. For the love of family and ancestors, I would assume we are all in this. Yes, maybe all the information is not all there, as we would like to have it. But then, going through Ellis Island (right now a big pain), the LDS site, Ancestor.com etc. do not have all the information at the push of a button. Again, all mostly volunteers that could be doing other things like rolling in the grass with your grandchildren! Deb, you are doing a thankless job very well. Maybe Santa will slip somemore volunteers to help you in the old stocking this Christmas! Sorry but yes, I think you are wrong. I have found this site not only useful but very informative. I think that Deb has every right to feel very proud of what she has accomplished with her website. I also think that those who have contributed should be commended and thanked for a job well done. If you don't like the site, then don't visit it. Kristi, I am afraid you are way out of line on this. If you don't find the site useful, then don't visit it. Debie has worked very hard for a very long time despite the illness and death of her dear mother as well as her family tribulations. Through it all she has plugged away, honestly, I don't know how she does it. Visit the surrounding counties and compare. Sheboygan has 300% more data, at least, than the others. Debie's job is that of a coordinator. She coordinates information from contributors (you) and puts it on line. You can't possibly expect her to do all the work! I have found the site useful as I am sure hundreds of other's have. Additionally, you can count on Debie to help you out if you ever have a question. I am the coordinator of a county site in another state and I tell you, it is very difficult to get people to contribute in my county. I also believe that having a little bit of information on alot of subjects is better than complete info on one. You say that you don't mean to hurt anyone's feelings but if you wanted to come across as constructive criticism, then you could have worded your letter differently. Now you need to put your fingers where your mouth is and transcribe a complete file and send it to Debie so she can put it online. Sorry Debi but I feel that I have to post this to the list. If other people feel as Kristi does then they need to get on the ball as well. Please don't leave your post as I feel you are doing a terrific job! Most sincerely, Karen De Groote-Johnson
Hi Debbie, Are you the one in charge of the marriage project? I noticed that some marriages and some birth records have the parents names listed, but the majority of them don't. Can I ask why they aren't all there or is this perhaps another thing coming? I personally think if you are going to do a project, perhaps you should complete one project before moving onto another. A bunch of little bits of nothing does equal up to one bit nothing for us researchers in the end. I did a bunch of snooping around on your site and found that most everything there is incomplete. You have an anniversary section and that is far from full. I was very excited about the Thomas Heraty diary as my grandmother told me about his diaries, but that is not complete either. The census are only an index and that sure doesn't help much. Please excuse me if I sound like I am in a bad mood tonight, I don't mean to come across as being a snot, but it sure would be much more useful if you complete just one thing before going onto the next. Perhaps then it would be helpful to someone. To the other genealogists out there, am I wrong? Have you found this site to be very useful or do you agree with me? You can e-mail me privately if you would prefer not to expose your thoughts to others, but I am curious. Please Deb, don't take this wrong, I don't mean to hurt anyone's feelings here, only trying to help you to create a useful site, something you can take pride in. Thanks for your time, Kristi ______________________________________________ FREE Personalized Email at Mail.com Sign up at http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup
Hi Kristi, I am sorry you haven't found the website to be useful. You are correct, alot of it is not complete, yet. Would you be willing to help? I can use all of the help I can get. I am not trying to make any excuses, but I thought that even just the indexes right now would be better then only one section at a time until all of the parent names, etc. are there. As for alot of the sections being bare, the marriages, anniversary and so on are there for people to share. It is impossible for me to obtain the newspaper articles for all of the marriage, anniversary, obits, etc. and place them on-line. I feel by spending the time and money to copy every newspaper or almost everyone, it would be less helpful to the researcher then the current tidbits. The vital indexes are coming along. Yes, I know some of them have parent names and your right, most of them don't, right now. I felt getting the index on-line was as important as adding the parent names to them. Sheboygan's vital indexes don't list the parent's names like Manitowoc's birth indexes do. Every parent name you see listed there is from going to the Register of Deeds and looking up each record or from my personal research. I wish I had more time, I truly do. I would love to do nothing more then genealogy all day, but I am a home mom and my children come before anything else in my life. I hope the researchers can understand that. I have supplied the address and cost to obtain the vital record and I try to go there as much as possible. You are correct in many ways. Right now when I get to the Register of Deeds, I spend all of my time hand copying the vital indexes to be able to add more information to the website. I only had the indexes copied to June 1907 and as you can see on the contributors page, that was alot of donations to get those. Anyway, I feel by adding more indexes and not parent names right now, I am allowing the researcher a better chance of seeing if an ancestor was born or married here. I will be adding the death indexes next. I have ordered two census microfilms with the extra money left from the donations for the vital indexes. In time they will be added also. Kristi I am sorry if you find my site useless. I do the best I can. I have placed my own genealogy on hold for a long time now so I can help others with there research. I love genealogy and I enjoy helping other people. I can take constructive criticism and I will rethink my way of doing this website, as I said I am doing this to help other people and if it isn't helping others, then I need to change something or maybe even it is time for me to move on and let someone new take over. When I add something to the county, I think to myself if this would be more helpful in my own research and that is how I am going about things. Maybe that is what isn't working. If anyone has anything they would like to say to me about the website, please feel free to -email me in private. I am not trying to hide from any criticism, but I feel the mailing list can be used for better things. On the other hand, perhaps if others sent their ideas to the mailing list, then together we could make this the most useful site on the web. I will try to make things better for everyone, I am truly sorry if you are sitting back patiently waiting for this site to become useful, please forgive me. I do want to say one more thing. I do take great pride in my county pages. I have visited many genweb counties with much less on their sites, on the other hand I have also visited some with much more. I will try to work harder on it everyone, I promise. Debie
Hi, I am not sure who is in charge or who has the A & M marriages, but what are the chances they will get on-line soon? I have been waiting a long time and I thought the M's were coming, but there was only one part and that was it. I know people are busy and there is alot of stuff on-line for Sheboygan county, but the letter M is a massive letter, I thought that would be on-line before Q or U. Thanks in advance, Kristi ______________________________________________ FREE Personalized Email at Mail.com Sign up at http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup
Hi Kristi, The A & M marriages are on their way. I have farmed the M's out and the A's were mailed late this afternoon to someone who has offered to help transcribe to get them on-line. I am truly sorry for the delay in getting these on-line and we are trying to speed this up. The M's will be coming, I promise. Thanks for your patience, Debie
Hi Listers, Who ever just received their e-mail from the Sheboygan county mailing list. I am talking within the last 30 minutes that you have checked your mail, please scan your computer. You have the virus that is sending out the contaminated program. Please don't make me go and remove everyone from single letter mode until I know who it is. Thanks, Debie
Hi Debie, I bought the Holland Twp map from another party on ebay for 7 or 9.00. I can't believe they are trying to make such a killing. I will be happy to share my Holland township with whomever wants a copy. I didn't find my GGGgrandfather so I am sure he was still in Belgium twp, Ozaukee at that time. Wish I could find that one. Anyhow, at least you have Holland Twp covered. The map is very ledgible, blue color, and scannable for anyone who wants. Many, many property owners on this map at least. All the Best, Karen in Iowa
Hi Listers, I was hunting around tonight and discovered someone is auctioning plat maps from 1875 for various townships in Sheboygan county. I discovered this person broke them down into each township and has a total of 23 maps. I would love to get them and put them on the website, but the starting bid for all but three of them is $24.99, there are three with a starting bid of $19.99. Hi Listers, Just a quick note to let all of you know several things have been added on-line this week. I have added the Kr - Kz marriages transcribed by Kay R., this now completes the entire K section. Also added was the Jo - Jz marriages. I will get to the Ja - Jn marriages asap. The last bit I want to let you know about are the Maa - Maq marriages transcribed by Holly. Have a Happy Easter, Debie
I would like to exchange e-mail with anyone who has info on Frederick ZURHEIDE and spouse Maria MEIER. They immigrated to Sheboygan, WI in 1847, probably from Lippe-Detmold or Schaumberg-Lippe. In Shebiygan they had the following children: 1. Henry; b:12-25-1849, m: Jennie BERRY where ?; d: 5-7-1919 in Fontanella, IA 2. Louise; b: 3-29-1850; m: 12-15-1870 in Centerville Township, Manitowoc Co to Ernst Henry DEHNE; d:5-5-1913 in Centerville Township. Friedrick died in 1852 and Maria in 1855 leaving the children as orphans. A Henry Rauchschwalbe was appointed the children's guardian. Oral tradition says the Theo STOCK family of Centerville Township later took Louisa into their family as an orphan. Glenn Witte Mission Viejo, CA Wglenne@aol.com
Hi Listers, Sorry, I did forget to mention something very important. You will not get this file from the mailing list itself. If you send a note to the mailing list, then it seems this virus is set up to send itself to the e-mail address of the person sending the letter. Does that make sense? You will not get the virus unless you execute (open) the file. Should you receive a letter with that file name attached, delete the attached file immediately. I want to say this again, you will not get a virus from any of the letters from the mailing list itself, and a virus can only become active if you execute a program that is infected. Opening a letter from the mailing list will not infect your computer in any way. If you have any questions, please e-mail me. Debie Blindauer
Hi Listers, I need for all of you to fire up your virus checkers as one of you has a virus on your computer. Each time the Sheboygan mailing list goes out, Rootsweb gets a letter back with an attached virus. This of course bounces and the letter comes to me. There is no name on these e-mails, so I can't go back to the person and let them know. I know this much, the person is on the single letter mode of the mailing list. I have figured that much out because when I sent the letter the other day about the cemetery, I received an e-mail back with the following attached file: AKIPECAK.EXE Please, everyone, check your computers before someone else gets sucked into this. Please e-mail me privately and let me know you found it and removed it, otherwise I will be forced to remove everyone, one at a time, and test until I find who has the virus. Thanks for your cooperation in this matter, Debie Blindauer
Hello all, I wanted to revise my offer for look ups in my local library. I will still work on the ones already sent to me as of this afternoon, but how about I work on about 5-6 books for every check out period? Example: I have this current set of books out until April 23, 2001. The current set include: Cemertery and Bible records: A publication of the Mississippi Genealogical Society. The following books are indexed. Vol. 2 for 1955 Vol. 4 for 1957 Vol. 5 for 1958 Vol. 6 for 1959 Vol. 7 for 1960 Vol. 10 for 1963 Each book contains about 200+ pages with a lot of the goodies you would expect in a bible or the cemetery. I will keep you updated when the books change and try to include a little discription of what the books include. Please remember to try to give me as much information as dates, places and names as you can. Afterwhile I will go back to all look ups and I will let you know then. Sincerely, Kim Pollard Drew, Ms. -- Original statement I visited my local library and found that it has a large (for the town of 2,500 people) collection of Genealogical reference books that was donated some time ago. Hi All, Below is an exact excerpt from the Eastman's News Letter. I want to Thank all of you. This has been a success for those of us who wrote. Let it never be said us genealogists can't save what we believe is important to us. Thanks to all of you who helped and wrote to them. We helped to stop it, Debie Blindauer Here is what was said: - Follow-up on Milwaukee Cemetery Desecration Last week I wrote about Evelyn Oliveras' efforts to prevent the Milwaukee County (Wisconsin) Board of Supervisors' plan to dig up all the graves at the Milwaukee County Poor Farm cemetery, place all the remains in one box, and then bury those remains someplace else. I relayed Evelyn's request for readers of this newsletter to contact the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors as well as Milwaukee news media. This must have worked. Here is an excerpt from a long e-mail I received from Evelyn Oliveras this week: I cannot thank you enough for your help with the cemetery desecration problem here in Milwaukee. The county was flooded with e-mails. The newspapers wrote about it and one TV station did a very nice interview at the cemetery with some of the ladies from our group. They showed one of the ladies' young son placing flowers on one of the few tombstones as the Reporter spoke about our protest. The interview was short and much was edited but it was nice and it did the job. People responded very well to it. The Milwaukee County at first tried to say they had no immediate plans to move the cemetery and that it would be at least 3 years before action was taken, but this fooled very few. Our lady that attended the open forum had discussions with the man who is pushing this and she knows what she heard. <some text deleted for brevity> I want your readers to know that there are two people currently transcribing the records of this cemetery. One lady is transcribing from Microfiche and I am working with photocopies of the original registers. I paid for these myself rather than create any problems. Both of us are going to place them on the Internet so the chances of them being found will be high. The county cannot destroy their names. This seemed to be a priority issue in many of the protests. I am trying to respond to each person who copied me on their messages to the Board but this may take some time, so I wish to give each a "Thank You!" and ask that they may be blessed with successful research. Evelyn closed her message with a great quote: "Show me the manner in which a nation cares for its dead, and I will measure with mathematical exactness the tender mercies of its people, their respect for the laws of the land and their loyalty to high ideals." - William Gladstone You can contact Evelyn Oliveras directly at: MissEv1017@aol.com
Hi Listers, Your help is needed. If you have received the Eastman's Genealogy newsletter, then you may already know about this. The below information is quoted as written in the newsletter. Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, is planning on digging up a potter's cemetery, taking all of the remains and placing them in one box and reburying them someplace else. This is being done for the purpose of a water retention pond. Please make yourself heard, write to the county supervisor and to one or all of the news media listed at the end of this letter and let them know this is not the way to go. Chances are pretty good that I have no relatives in that cemetery, but nonetheless this angers me to no end and I made myself heard. With enough of us taking a couple of minutes to e-mail, we will save this cemetery. Thanks for your time, Debie Blindauer - Milwaukee Cemetery To Be Desecrated This week I received an e-mail from Evelyn Oliveras that expressed concerns about the plans of the Milwaukee County (Wisconsin) Board of Supervisors. They reportedly plan to dig up all the graves at the Milwaukee County Poor Farm cemetery, place all the remains in one box and then bury those remains someplace else. The Milwaukee County Poor Farm began operation in November of 1852 with 24 people housed in a remodeled farmhouse. It remained in operation until the early twentieth century with additional buildings and a hospital constructed as the indigent population grew. You can find more information about the Poor Farm at "Jen's Photo Scrapbook Of the Milwaukee County Poorhouse" at: http://www.poorhousestory.com/WISC_PhotoScrapbook.htm Here is the message from Evelyn Oliveras: I need the help of each one of you who feels as strongly as I do about cemetery desecration. We have a county cemetery called Potter's field or sometimes referred to as Milwaukee County Poor Farm which is about to be desecrated by the county Board of Supervisors. They say they will dig up all the remains, place them in one box and move them to another location. These poor people were already buried on top of each other originally, and the whole thing is very sad to those of us who care. I am in the process of transcribing the burial registers to post on the web, but it is a long difficult process with different handwriting, etc. I have a full time job and family as well, but I devote what time I can to it. The County says that they've had no objections from the public and I say it is because no one really knows about it. I didn't even know about the open forum they had to discuss this and other issues until after it was over. They plan to make their move within a month, so I am beginning to panic. What I do need is for as many of you as will to email or snail mail them and let them know that the eyes of the rest of the world are on them. I have protested this type of behavior in all different countries as well as all over the U.S. and I know those emails counted. A friend in Finland has protested at every opportunity, and it's wonderful to let them know genealogy has united us all in an effort to preserve our heritage, our country and our ancestors. And these people are someone's ancestors. Milwaukee was an important Great Lakes Port and many people entered through here from all over. Many of the names are German, but when you have 7-10 thousand names, you've covered most every nationality. Please help us by letting the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors know how we collectively feel about this. I have faith that our group can move mountains. Please help us push. Mr. Tom Ament is the gentleman who appears to be in charge of this cemetery project and Karen Ordinans is the Director of the Board. You can see her Web page at: http://www.co.milwaukee.wi.us/ordinans.htm. I did a bit of checking on Evelyn's information. At the bottom of the Web page that she mentioned, you will find a link to send e- mail to the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors. The e-mail address is: county@www.co.milwaukee.wi.us If you share Evelyn Oliveras' concerns, please write to Karen Ordinans, Director of the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors at county@www.co.milwaukee.wi.us.
