As printed, 3 grandchildren surviving is what it says. This could be a misprint, or perhaps only 3 were living at that time (although it does seem likely that number is way too low). I am not related to Mrs. Josephine DeMarb, but to her husband Henry DeMarb, who was a half-brother to my great-grandmother, Effie Jane GARVEY HARTMANN. I have some info on Mrs. Demarb's children, but nothing further on grandchildren, etc.

There was also a passenger on that ship named Johan Michael Christman who I believe is my ancestor. The passengers were from Wuerttemberg. I have no idea where in Wuerttemberg Michael Christman was from. From genealogy conferences I have attended, I have learned that I should try to find the place of origin of others on the ship then check those places and the surrounding areas for Michael Christman. Do you know where your Michael Pfrang was from? I would appreciate having any information you have on him. Thank you. Carole Irene Crismon Coook

Hi Listers, I thought I would update you on the recent story of identity theft. I have received several letters both in agreement with the bill and also against it. The couple who were in agreement, only did so by trying to see things from the legislative point of view. Anyway on tonight's 10:00 news in Wisconsin, a story was told on the news of a massive Identity Theft and how it came about. This time it seems to have come from a bank employee who printed out personal information, etc. about people and was selling this information to a "friend" in Chicago. This person used this information to buy such things as very expensive cars, etc. The bank still hadn't told their customers this happened until the News media brought it to light. Then the Bank stated the reason they hadn't told their customers yet was because they didn't believe they were at fault for this happening and then hadn't figured out exactly how they were going to explain this to their customers. Right now they still have no idea how many people's personal information was sold or how many more people could be affected yet. Just another proof that closing off the vital indexes isn't going to stop this as it isn't an avenue the thieves use. Thought it was interesting and wanted to share, Debie Blindauer

Hi Listers, Below is an article that appeared in the Eastman's Genealogy Newsletter. Please read this article because if it doesn't affect you now, it very well may affect all of us researchers someday. If California passes this law, it very well could set a precedent for other states to follow. Please read the article below, if you live in California, please take the time and let them know how you feel about it. Thanks for your time, Debie Blindauer The following article is from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 2002 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. - California Senate Bill 1614 Threatens To Close Genealogy Records California Senate Bill 1614 is a threat to all genealogists. First, it threatens anyone researching California families since this bill, if passed, will reduce access to California records. Secondly, it threatens all genealogists as this could become a precedent, encouraging other states to similarly restrict access to birth and death records. The passage of California Senate Bill 1614 will close the indexes to both birth and death records. These indexes will then be replaced by a "noncomprehensive index" that can only be viewed at the California Department of Health Services and/or in individual county recorders offices. No indexes would be available online, on CD-ROM or in print in any other place. The legislative do-gooders have proposed this obnoxious legislation as a method of preventing identity theft. However, neither the California State Department of Health Services nor any of the county clerks have ever found any incidents where present identity thefts could be linked to either the sale of birth or death certificates or to these indexes. In other words, this piece of legislation is being proposed because someone thinks that there might be a future problem, not because of any recognized past or present issue. The impact to genealogists, however, will be felt immediately if this proposed legislation becomes law. Senate Bill 1614, "Closure of the Birth and Death Records Indexes," passed the California Judiciary Committee on May 7, 2002. It had a rather silly amendment tacked onto it, requiring that people who have already purchased the public domain indexes in the past to now keep the information within the indexes confidential. This retroactive prohibition of previously produced public domain data seems a bit far-fetched to me. Senate Bill 1614 will next be heard in the Appropriations Committee. If it is passed in the Appropriations Committee, it will then go to the Floor of the Senate for a vote. If it passes there, it will go to the State Assembly. Two rules committees in the Assembly must also hear it. Because of the nature of the bill, it should be referred to the Judiciary and then to the Appropriations Committees, in that order. You can follow the developments of this bill on the California State Genealogical Alliance Web site at: http://www.csga.com/legislative_watch.htm. California residents: please contact your state senators and representatives today to tell them your opinion of this bill. You can find the name and e-mail address of your senator at: http://www.senate.ca.gov/~newsen/senators/senators.htp and the name and e-mail of your Assemblyman at: http://www.assembly.ca.gov/acs/defaulttext.asp.
