Meyer Ted J. Meyer, age 91, of the Town of Wescott, Shawano passed away early Tuesday morning, June 16, 2009 at Shawano Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. Ted was born June 26, 1917 in Pittsburgh, Pa., a son of the late Walter and Olga (Bednarski) Meyer. He attended school in Chicago and later Stevens Point, graduating from Stevens Point High School in 1934. He then attended The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where he earned his teaching degree and met his future wife, Marie Wipperfurth. Following graduation in 1939, he taught at Stevens Point High School. Ted entered the United States Army and served during World War II from 1942 to 1946 in the European theater. Ted attained the rank of captain. On June 19, 1947, he was united in marriage to his sweetheart, Marie Wipperfurth at St Mary's Catholic Church in Tomahawk, Wis. Following their marriage the couple lived in Stevens Point and later, Ted took a position with the Hardware Mutual Insurance Company, he relocated to Grand Rapids, Mich. He finished his career with what is now known as the Sentry Insurance Company, retiring in 1977 after 30 years of service. Ted had served in the U. S. Army reserve for many years, attaining the rank of Lt. Colonel. His wife preceded him in death on Jan. 6, 2005. He is a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano. He was an avid fisherman, deer hunter and gardener. He very much enjoyed the arts, acting in plays at the Meilke Theater, painting and playing the piano. Survivors include his children, Susan (Roger) Walczewski of Grand Rapids, Mich., John (Lynn) Meyer of Stevens Point, Margaret McDuffee of Grand Rapids, Mich., Thomas Meyer of Wausau, William Meyer of Green Bay, Barbara (Robert) Moura of Kingston, Mass., Michael Meyer of Plover and Timothy Meyer of Sarasota, Fla.; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Ted was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 27 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Shawano. Father Len Evers will be the celebrant. Interment will be in Tomahawk, Wis. Relatives and friends may call at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the hour of Mass.
