She was born April 15, 1884 in Wittenberg, the daughter of the late William and Hedwig (Marquardt) Hanke. On June 8, 1904 Emma was united in marriage to Charles Hartleben in Wittenberg. He preceded her in death on July 1, 1952. Survivors include five children, Walter Hartleben, Arthur Hartleben, Arnold Hartleben, Clara (Albert) Erickson and Lucille (Ben) Wopshel; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two brothers, William (Lillian) Hanke and Paul (Esther) Hanke; and two sisters, Alma Mickelson and Edna Sickler. In addition to her husband and parents, Emma was preceded in death by one son, Charlie, in infancy, three sisters and one brother. Funeral services were held April 13, 1969 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Wittenberg. The Rev. M.J. Haleen officiated. Interment was in Forest Home Cemetery, Wittenberg.
