Coyhis Aught L. Coyhis, age 87 of the Town of Bartelme, passed away Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009 in Wausau. Born on March 31, 1922 in the Town of Red Springs, he was the son of the late Joe and Mary (Hill) Coyhis. On Feb. 18, 1943 he entered active duty with the United States Army to serve his country as a medic during World War II. During his years in service, Aught was part of the Normandy Invasion and had received many decorations including 4 Bronze Battle Stars. After his honorable discharge, Aught's passion in life was to help people in sobriety. He was active in AA. In addition, he was a certified counselor and was very proud of his 57 years of sobriety. Throughout his life, Aught helped hundreds of people become sober and stay sober and even held weekly meetings in his home. Aught was also active with the Great Lakes Intertribal and was past tribal chairman. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Wilderness and a member of the Mohican Veterans. In his spare time, Aught enjoyed going for car rides and logging. Aught is survived by: his five children, Don Coyhis of Colorado Springs, Colo., Laura (Philip) Hom of Denver, Colo., Dennis (Kim) Coyhis of Mich., Kristi (Kenneth) Arnold of Gresham, Tim (Donna) Coyhis of Bowler; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ethel Schauske of Bowler. Aught was preceded in death by: his son, Darwin; his parents; and fourteen brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009 at the Lutheran Church of the Wilderness with Melinda Shriner and Dennis Nelson officiating. Burial will be in the Stockbridge Indian Burial Grounds. Family and friends may call at the church on Wednesday after 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
