She was born March 7, 1934 in Gresham, Wisconsin to Eldor W. and Sarah H. Heinz Schmidt. She graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor's degree in Home Economics. Her senior year she was named Student of the Year at B.Y.U. She was sealed to E. John McDonald in the Manti Temple on Dec. 19, 1959. Rachel taught home economics for two years at Granger High School and for two years at Provo High School. She taught the next 24 years at both the Grand County Middle and High Schools in Moab. She taught all four of her children including her son, who was the first boy to take Home Economics class in Moab. She loved teaching how to cook and sew, and believed in the principle that "To teach is to touch someone's life, forever." Rachel was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was extremely devoted and faithful serving in various positions. Rachel loved to serve the Lord by serving her fellow man. She is survived by her husband John McDonald, her children, Kimberly (Chris) Knowles, Moab, UT; Chad (Rauni) McDonald and Marlo (Aaron) Salomonson both of Eagle, Idaho; Jill (Scott) Memmott of Chico, CA,; 14 grandchildren Amber, Lindsey, Sarah, Sydney, Brendan, Nicole, Derek, Heather, Emily, Samanth, Mandy, Jamie, Kyle and Jesse. Also surviving are two brothers and two sisters, Howard (Rea) Schmidt, Oaxaco, Mexico; Nathalie (Robert) Williamson, Provo, UT; Nadine (Eddie) Rosenberg, Shawano, Wis.; and Merritt (Janice) Schmidt Gresham, Wis. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 23, 2002 at the LDS Stake Center in Moab. Viewings will be held Monday evening, April 22, 2002 from 7-9 p.m. at Spanish Valley Mortuary Chapel and one hour prior to the services at the church. Services under the direction of Spanish Valley Mortuary.
