Born Sept. 14, 1943 and raised in Green Bay, he was the son of the late Lucille (Buss) and Vincent R. Detry. On June 10, 1967 he married Eve Lynne (Donarski) and together they had two children, Michelle and Marcus. An educator for his entire career, he received his Bachelor of Science degree from UW Oshkosh in January of 1967 and began teaching with the Oshkosh Area School District at Merrill Junior High School. In the fall of 1967 he transferred to the district's new junior high school, Tipler, where he taught social studies. In addition he taught driver education the following summer. In the fall of 1968 Dennis began graduate work at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb as part of a government NDEA fellowship program in counselor education. He received his Masters of Science in Education in 1969 and began working on his doctorate while employed by NIU as a residence hall associate director. He received hi! s Ed. D. in Counselor Education from Northern Illinois University in 1975. He then began his career in university financial aid, becoming Associate Director of Financial Aid at Northern Illinois, a position he held until his move to UW Oshkosh in March of 1980. As Associate Director of Financial Aid at UW Oshkosh he was committed to helping young adults pursue their dreams and make a college education possible. Forever loyal to his job, he developed many close relationships with his student workers and the students he assisted. He was a member of the Wisconsin, Midwest, and National Associations of Financial Aid Administrators. In 1989 Dennis required a liver transplant. Undergoing successful transplantation at the Mayo Clinic and returning to a full and productive lifestyle were accomplishments he considered among his greatest achievements. At home Dennis enjoyed attracting birds to his feeders while constantly trying to outwit the squirrels. On weekends and vacations he h! eaded north to the cottage on Legend Lake where he spent many hours on construction projects but took time to fish and enjoy the quiet beauty of the lake. He derived great satisfaction from watching things grow. His land near Bonduel was planted with over 1500 evergreens with the help (coercion?) of many friends and family members. He nurtured the tiny trees which are now 20 ft. tall and was always amazed at how much they grew each year. He carefully cared for over two dozen apple trees, sharing the fruits of his labor with family, neighbors and coworkers. This past fall he felt he had the best crop of apples ever. He also grew hot peppers and tomatoes so he could supply his brother-in-law, Tom with ingredients necessary for his famous salsa. Dennis' goal was to have salsa so hot it "smoked" when the lid was removed. An avid sports fan, Dennis attended Green Bay Packers games since he was four years old. He particularly enjoyed college athletics, attending countless collegiate games and acting as the Financial Aid Office's liaison with the ath! letic department. Dennis is survived by his wife Eve Lynne his daughter Michelle, a doctoral candidate at the University of Texas School of Public Health in Houston, (Special friend Chris Schacherer) and his son Marcus, a December graduate of Clemson University now beginning his career in Baltimore, Maryland. He is further survived by cousins in Tomahawk and Green Bay ten special in-laws 20 nieces and nephews as well as many grand-nieces and nephews. Two dogs, Flip and Astro, were rescued and became family members because of his generosity, and he was preceded in death by his faithful companion Cur-Lee. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Dennis on Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000 at 7 p.m. at St. Raphael Catholic Church, 830 Westhaven Dr., Oshkosh, with the Rev. Daniel Felton officiating. Burial will be in Allouez Catholic Cemetery in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Family and friends may call directly at the church on Thursday from 4 p.m. until the time of Mass. In lieu of floral expressions, a memorial fund is being established in Dennis' name. The Seefeld Family of Funeral Chapels is assisting the family with arrangements. Many thanks to everyone who helped Dennis with numerous projects at his home, lake and land (especially the Strahl family of Sheboygan) and to the Minnesota family who gave the "Gift of Life." God bless all of you. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
