Her death was the result of complications following a hip fracture, Dec. 8, 2007. She was 86. A resident of Scottsdale since 1971, Jeanne Marie was born in rural Waukechon, Wisconsin, the daughter of Rowland D. and Eva Jane (Devlin) Morris. She was graduated as a registered nurse in 1943 from Bellin Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Green Bay, Wisconsin. While serving during World War II as a U.S. Navy nurse, first in Corpus Christi, Texas, and later at Alameda Naval Air Station in California, she met Arthur E. Hughes, a U.S. Marine Corps fighter pilot who had flown combat missions in the South Pacific. They married in Oakland, California, in 1945, and throughout their 57 years of marriage lived in Missouri, Wisconsin, Michigan and Arizona. Arthur Hughes passed away in 2002. Art and Jeanne were devoted to their three children, Michael, Robert and Mary, who,! in turn, were devoted to their parents. Michael Hughes passed away in 1990. Jeannie, as she was known by nearly all of her friends, dedicated herself to the care of others, both as a hospital nurse and later as a public health nurse in Saginaw, Michigan. She was a nursing supervisor for the Maricopa County Health Department, working from 1971 until her retirement in 1985. Throughout her life she formed and kept close, loving friendships. She was a true listener, a gentle soul with a firm resolve, even-tempered and enthusiastic, a woman of deep and unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. She is survived by her daughter, Mary, of Phoenix; her son Robert (Denise), of Munger, Michigan; her sister Wanda Gustafson, of Appleton, Wisconsin; her 4 grandchildren: Jason Hughes, Matthew (Deborah) Hughes, Alison (Michael) Watt, and Joel Hughes; and her nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 16, 2008, from 6 until 8 p.m., at Messinger Indian School Mortuary, in Scottsdale. ! Funeral service will be Thursday, January 17, 10:00 a.m. at Glass & Ga rden Community Church, 8620 E. McDonald Dr., Scottsdale. The Hughes family is deeply grateful to the physicians, nurses and all others who cared with compassion and love for Jeanne Marie during the final weeks of her life on earth.
