Richter FL United States RICHTER, DR. WALTER G. December 17, 1908 - November 12, 2008. Walter G. Richter, 99, was born in New Wells, MO, on Dec. 17, 1908. Walter was baptized, schooled and confirmed into the Christian faith in Immanuel Lutheran Church. He attended a public school near his home for the 7th and 8th grades and two years of high school in Altenburg, MO. In 1927 he entered Concordia Teachers College at River Forest, IL, completing the necessary instruction to enter the teaching profession. In 1931, the year of his graduation, he was placed to teach the middle grades at the Lutheran Mohican Indian Boarding School in Gresham, WI. Here, he also met his wife, Martha Dorothea Naumann, who was serving as a deaconess at the boarding school. In 1932, he taught in the Lutheran school in Shawneetown, MO, grades 1 through 6, and also served as organist at the church. In 1934, he taught all grades from 1 through 8 and served as organist, youth leader and bus driver at Emmanuel of Rolla, MO, a newly ! organized school in the Ozarks. In 1936 he married Martha and served for 7 years as principal, organist, Sunday School superintendent and youth leader to Trinity Lutheran Church and School in Cole Camp, MO. He then moved to St. Peter, IL , and taught in a 2 room school. After 2 years he accepted a position as teacher and later principal of Luther Memorial School in Cleveland, OH where he served for 21 years. In 1966 he accepted a call to Immanuel Lutheran School in Asheville, NC, and after 5 years, retired to Ft. Lauderdale, FL. In the early years of retirement, he began writing and publishing books covering school subjects and church history. After 11 years in South Florida, he and Martha moved to Lutheran Haven in Oviedo, FL, where they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. In July of 1994, Martha entered glory with her Lord. The next 14 years in his retirement were spent writing one book after another, two of which, Saxon Sagas and The One Room School were awarded c! ommendations and awards from the Concordia Historical Institute of St. Louis, MO. Walter authored over 50 books and was also awarded the Alumnus of the Year and honorary Dr. of Letters degree from Concordia University Chicago in 2006. During his retirement in Central Florida he also found time to volunteer in retirement centers and nursing homes sharing his gifts of writing and art with the handicapped. Walter is survived by a daughter, Margaret Landrey of Irving, TX; sons, Kenneth Richter of Portage, MI; Rev. Theodore Richter of Dothan, AL; Richard Richter of River Forest, IL; 11 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.
