He was born Aug. 17, 1914, in the town of Easton, Marathon County, to the late Louis and Emma (Laffin) Mortenson. He married Irene Trantow on Nov. 10, 1934, in Aniwa. She preceded him in death April 18, 2002. Pete worked at Mortenson Trucking Co., then farmed in the town of Plover until his retirement. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, town of Easton, Marathon County. He had also been a member of the former Nudell Community Club. In his youth, he enjoyed playing baseball for Aniwa. He especially loved watching and listening to baseball and never missed attending his great-grandson's baseball games. Pete also loved the outdoors and enjoyed gun deer hunting. Survivors include one grandson, Tim (Alice) Verpoorten, Yakima, Wash.; three granddaughters, Pam (Jay) Luebbe, Round Rock, Texas, Vicki Greisinger, Antigo, and Amy (Ken) Schmidt, Ringle; one son-in-law, Lawrence Verpoorten, Antigo; and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Jeanne Verpoorten; one granddaughter, Lori Spinn; nine brothers and six sisters. Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 2, 2006, at Bethany Lutheran Church, town of Easton. The Rev. Tabitha Gallatin will officiate. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, town of Harrison, Marathon County, in the spring. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church.
