Thomas HERSCHER - Earl E. Thomas, 78, of Herscher died Monday (July 21, 1997) in his residence. His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Herscher, with Pastor Louis Knief and Vicor Penhallegon officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Schreffler Funeral Home Herscher Chapel and one hour before the service Thursday at the church. Burial will be in the Trinity Cemetery, Herscher. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Kankakee Valley or Trinity Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; three sons, Ron (Jan) Thomas, Kankakee; Bob (Tammy) Thomas, Pierceton, Ind.; and Jerry (Kathy) Thomas, Herscher; one sister, Rebecca Brady, Bloomington; two brothers, Cliff Thomas and Gene Thomas, all of Aniwa, Wis.; nine grandsons; one step-granddaughter; and one great-grandson. Also surviving is one sister-in-law, Ann Thomas, Aniwa, Wis. He was preceded in death by one brother, Allen Thomas and one sister, Toby Kiersey, both of Lexington. Mr. Thomas was born Dec. 12, 1918, in Glasgow, Ky., a son of Lee and Muriel Bertram Thomas. He married Dorothy Martins Thomas on Nov. 23, 1942, in Bloomington. He farmed in his early years before retiring from Lutheran Brotherhood Insurance. He was self-employed as a contractor, having built several churches in the Central Illinois area. He enjoyed fishing and sports and was actively involved in community service, including Lutheran Brotherhood branch. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Herscher, and involved in church activities. He also was involved in Meels on Wheels, the Herscher American Legion and Clifton VFW. Mr. Thomas was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from Feb. 21, 1941, to Oct. 3, 1945. He received numerous awards, including the American Defense Ribbon, the European-African-Eastern Theater Ribbon with one Silver Battle Star, three overseas service bars, one service stripe, a Good Conduct Medal and a Bronze Star. His campaigns/battles included: Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, the Rhineland and Central Europe.
