Monteith Darrel E. Monteith, age 80, of Elgin, passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2001 in Sherman West Court, Elgin. He was born August 25, 1921 in Elgin, the son of Ora and Mary Monteith. He was a graduate of Elgin High School in 1939 and married his high school sweetheart, Bette J. Schmitz in 1943. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corp, attaining the rank of Major. He owned and operated Walter Darrel Kitchens in Arlington Heights, IL and was a book store designer and consultant for Follett Corp. in Chicago and most recently operated DEMA, his own consulting business before retiring. He was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church of Elgin, American Legion Post 57 of Elgin, and also Elgin Elks Lodge 737. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Bette J. Monteith; a daughter, Eva Marie (Mark) Middendorf of Aurora, IL; three sons, Terence (Linda) Monteith of Navarino, WI, Darrel Monteith of Santa Paula, CA and Bruce Monteith of St. Charles, IL; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Douglas Monteith in 2000; a grandson, Michael in 1985 and two brothers, James and Robert Monteith. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:30 A.M. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin to St. Thomas More Catholic Church for Mass at 10:00 A.M. with Rev. Andrew Plesa officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be held Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. in the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Alzheimers Association.
