STANLEY SCHMELLING A memorial service for the Rev. Stanley J. Schmelling of Milwaukie will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Oak Grove United Methodist Church. He died of a stroke Monday in a Milwaukie care center at the age of 81. Born Dec. 27, 1910, in Kenosha, Wis., he was raised in Wisconsin, where he married Dorothy Dieck on June 30, 1937. After earning his bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Iowa, he worked as a schoolteacher in Wisconsin for a number of years before receiving his master's degree from the Garrett Seminary in Evanston, Ill. The Rev. Schmelling served the congregations of a number of churches in Wisconsin before moving to Oregon in 1965. He then was pastor for United Methodist churches in Fossil, Canby and Harrisburg until his retirement in 1976. He lived in Salem before moving to the Portland area five years ago. The Rev. Schmelling attended Oak Grove United Methodist Church. Survivors besides his wife include his sons, Jay of Federal Way, Wash., and Paul of Newberg; daughters, Nan Olson of Oregon City and Mary Christy of Canby; brothers, Wilbert of Sacramento, Alvin of Suring, Wis., and Perry of Newald, Wis.; sisters, Gladys Schoenberger of Gresham, Wis., and Esther Gillis of Bend; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Disposition was by cremation. The family suggests remembrances be contributions to the United Methodist Contributions for Overseas Relief program in care of Oak Grove United Methodist Church or to a favorite charity.
