Ethelyn M. Van Ornum, New London, age 94, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, May 28, 2005, at the Washington Center. She was born on July 9, 1910, in Eland, Wisconsin, daughter of the late William and Nora (McCalvy) Smerling. She graduated from Little Wolf High School and later from Stevens Point College with a degree in teaching. On July 18, 1966, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Van Ornum. He preceded her in death in 1975. Ethelyn taught in area schools for 46 years, the last 22 of those years in the New London School District. She retired from teaching in 1975. She was a longtime faithful member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, AARP, Wisconsin Retired Teachers Assn., Waupaca County Retired Teachers Assn. She is survived by a nephew, Mike (Carol) Doud, El Cajon, Calif. a niece, Barbara (Earl) Thorpe, El Cajon, Calif. Also surviving are several cousins and many friends. She was preceded in death by a sister, Verna (Matthew) Doud two brothers, William (Helen) Smerling, Wesley Smerling. The Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in New London with the Rev. Luke Bocher officiating. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in the Northport Ostrander Cemetery. Cline & Hanson Funeral Home 209 W.
