On April 21, 1956, he married Jean Amanda Hill in Waukegan. Mr. Sample first worked for Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago in the sample room. He then worked for American Motors in Kenosha, Wis., Massey Ferguson in Algoma and Kaukauna, Wis., and Superior Manufacturing in Mattoon, Wis. In 1980, he became transportation coordinator for Heatilator/Hon Industries in Mount Pleasant. Following retirement, he worked part-time for Goodyear Industries and Pleasant Outlook, both in Mount Pleasant, and also worked for both Weir Funeral Home and Weir & Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant. He was a 1952 graduate of Hughes High School in Cincinnati. He was a veteran, serving a total of 30 years in the Army, Army Reserves and National Guard. He retired at the rank of Lt. Colonel. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant, where he had served as an usher. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Lodge No. 8 AF & AM and a former member of the Masonic Lodge in Waukegan. He was the current commander of AMVETS Post No. 44 in Mount Pleasant, the vice commander of Henry County Veterans Honor Guard and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2561 in Mount Pleasant. Survivors include his wife; four sons, Gary of Indianola, Brian of West Des Moines, Robert of Homestead and Michael "Mickey" of Magnolia, Texas; one daughter, Nancy Edgington of Hamden, Conn.; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Melvin Sample and Jerry Sample, both of Lousiville, Ky., and William Sample of Lake Bluff, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at Weir & Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will be receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Sample will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Edward R. Peterson, senior pastor, officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Full military honors will be conducted at the church by the Henry County Veterans Honor Guard.
