Powell June 7, 1925 - Dec. 24, 2003 FLAG Martin A. Powell of Waukesha died in an automobile accident Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, in Fond du Lac County at age 78. Martin was born June 7, 1925, in Kaukauna, a son of Myron and Mary (nee Robinson) Powell. He attended Chilton High School and entered the U.S. Navy at age 17 in Milwaukee. He first enlisted as an apprentice seaman Dec. 30, 1942. On Dec. 30, 1949, he married Lorraine Jacobson in Norwich, Conn. He worked his way from bottom up through the ranks and qualified for special duties such as instructor and chief torpedo man's mate (submarine service). His highest achievement was chief petty officer and he received medals and ribbons of the American Area Campaign, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Asian-Pacific Area Campaign. He retired from active duty in April 1965. He then enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve until his retirement in 1972. He proudly made a career of serving his country. His work ethic took him to several jobs. He most recently worked for KL Trust, which was Senator Kohl's Jefferson Building in Milwaukee. His title was building maintenance supervisor. Martin was a lifetime member of the Elk's Club, the Fleet Reserve and the U.S. Submarine Veterans. He also was an on-call blood donor for the American Red Cross. He loved woodworking, hunting, fishing, travel and had many skills. He was an engineer at heart. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Lucille Balza, Agnes Martzahl, Ila Brehmer and Anna Ahrens; and two brothers, Robert and William Powell. Martin will be sadly missed by his children, Linda (the Rev. James) Lewis of Arcadia, Ind., Kristi (Peter) Powell-Grenfell of New York and Wendy (Gregory) Galbraith of Aniwa, and six grandchildren, Evan, Jessica, Nora Lorraine, Kerry, Sara and David Powell. He is also survived by his brothers, Herbert (Marie) Powell and Eugene (Muriel) Powell, both of Kaukauna, and his sisters-in-law, Doris Powell of Menomonee Falls and Viola Powell of Kaukauna. He is further survived by his brother-in-law, Leroy Balza of Kaukauna. The combined funeral service for Lorraine and Martin will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, at St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 424 Hyde Park Ave., Waukesha. The Rev. James Wilch will be the officiant. Burial will be in the Norway Lutheran Church Cemetery in the town of Norway. Friends may call from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at Cesarz, Charapata & Zinnecker Funeral Home, 237 Moreland Blvd., Waukesha, and from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service Saturday at St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Martin's name may be directed to the American Red Cross or to Ducks Unlimited. Memorials in Lorraine's name may be directed to St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church or to the American Cancer Society.
