He was born Oct. 6, 1934, in Eland, Wis., son of the late Felix and Claire (Schoenike) Konkol. Following the death of Bob's mother, Claire, his father married Rose Hoppe, and the two families became one. He graduated from Wittenberg High School in 1953. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Bob married Jeanette Ashenbrenner at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wittenberg on August 17, 1957. He was a typeset operator at the Denmark Press and at the Herald-Argus in La Porte, Ind. He owned and operated the Corner Inn in Maribel for 11 years. He retired from the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad after 18 years of service. Bob is a life member of the V.F.W. Post 6705, Denmark; a member of the Lakeshore Concertina Club; former member of the Maribel Sportsman Club; and a past president of the Maribel Lions Club. He was leader of the Seven Sharps Orchestra (Polka Band) and also played concertina for local events. Bob loved being outdoors, and enjoyed hunting and fishing, gardening, playing and coaching baseball. He loved being with his grandchildren: taking them fishing, teaching them baseball, and traveling to all their school and sporting events. Bob is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jeanette; six children, Kim Sargent, Manitowoc; Karla Konkol, Maribel; Jay (Cathy) Konkol, Hilbert; Sue (David) Rukamp, Pine Grove; Kevin (Sherri) Konkol, Denmark; Robert (Corinne) Konkol, Jr., Bellevue; 14 grandchildren, Nichole, Sgt. Isaac, and Dustin Sargent; Joseph and Andrew Ferry, and Ryan, Evan, and Austin Konkol; Alex, Casey, and Lindsey Rukamp; Malorie, Carson, and Hayden Konkol. Robert Jr. and Corinne are expecting their first child in September. Two great-grandchildren, Serenity and Caleb. Also surviving are three brothers, Leo (Verna) Hoppe, Milwaukee; Dennis (Vi) Konkol, Verona; and David (Elaine) Konkol, Cudahy; three sisters, Patricia Swanke, Lady Smith; Marilyn Szutkowski, Eland; Alvina (Robert) Buss, Eland; mother-in-law: Ethel Ashenbrenner; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Gerald (Doris) Ashenbrenner, Ronald (JoAnn) Ashenbrenner, Shirley Marshek, David (Dorothy) Ashenbrenner, Leon (Markay) Ashenbrenner, Julane (El! roy) Matz; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his three parents; an infant daughter, Valarie; father-in-law, Ernest Ashenbrenner; son-in-law, Wayne Sargent; brothers-in-law: James Swanke, Leo Szutkowski, and David A. "Tony" Marshek. Friends may call at Knutson-Cotter Funeral Home, 536 County R, Denmark, on Friday, March 27, 2009, from 3 until 7 p.m. Funeral service at 7 p.m. Interment in Forest Cemetery, Birnamwood, on Saturday, March 28, at 11:30 a.m. Online condolences may be expressed at www.cotterfuneralhome.com.
