Edmund Czech, O.F.M. a member of the Franciscan Friars of the Assumption B.V.M. Province died peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Oct. 17, 2001 at Queen of Peace Friary in Burlington. He was born on Dec. 23, 1916, in Ringle, to the late Walter and Julia (Wanta) Czech and was baptized Carl at St. Florian Parish in Hatley. He attended Resenberry Elementary School in Reid and graduated from St. Bonaventure High School in Sturtevant in 1935. Carl joined the Assumption B.V.M. Province of the Franciscan Order in 1935 at which time he received the name Edmund. He attended St. Francis College, Burlington, and completed theological studies at Lourdes Seminary, Cedar Lake, Ind., and St. Mary of the Angels Seminary in Green Bay, where he was ordained to the priesthood on June 15, 1944. He pursued post-graduate studies at Marquette University, Loyola University, DePaul University, and Illinois Institute of Technology from which he received his M.S. Degree in Physics. Fr. Edmund served the Franciscan community and the Church in two major ministries. From 1945 to 1972 he spent his time and talent in the classroom of St. Bonaventure High School in Sturtevant. He was a talented and popular teacher who remembered all his students by name. From 1972 to 1995 he was assigned to St. Bernardine Friary in Grand Rapids, Mich., where he ministered and substituted at parishes in the area. He served as local minister and Guardian in Grand Rapids from 1972 to 1984. In 1995, at the age of 79, Fr. Edmund agreed to a much-deserved retirement and moved to Queen of Peace Friary in Burlington. He is survived by his brothers, James (Rose) Czech, Stevens Point Walter Czech, Wausau his sisters, Dorothy (Frank) Hoffman, Aniwa Mattie Mientki, Slinger Sally (Vilas) Sonntag, Schofield Irene (Raymond) Szymanski, Marathon Sylvia (Walter) Benant, Madison. Nephews, nieces, cousins and his Franciscan family also survive him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Julia a brother, Ambrose an infant brother, Adam and a sister, Cordelia. Friends are invited to join the family and the friars after 9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Assumption B.V.M. Church, Pulaski. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church, followed by interment in the Provincial Cemetery. Marnocha Funeral Home, Pulaski, is assisting with arrangements.
