Harold MADISON - L. Harold 'Hal ' Hueschen passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at Meriter Hospital while surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 16, 1920, in Sylvan Grove, Kan., to Erich and Ella (Kreft) Hueschen. He spent his early years in Bonduel, where his father was the principal of the Lutheran School. He finished high school at Concordia Prep School in River Forest, Ill. He attended the University of Wisconsin and was called into service in 1942. At Camp Lee, Va., he was accepted to Officers Candidate School and graduated as the outstanding cadet. On Sept. 5, 1943, he was married to Virginia McElwain at Bethel Lutheran Church in Madison. He served in the European Theater until September 1944 and acted as support services to General Patten through the Battle of the Bulge. From there he was sent to Okinawa traveling through the Panama Canal. He experienced the big typhoon in Okinawa and they had to live in a cave for three days. He returned to Madison in January 1946 and was honorably discharged as a captain in 1953. He completed his degree in business at the University of Wisconsin in Madison! . His occupations then included retail clothing in Chicago, retail jewelry in Madison and then he traveled for 26 years representing 'The Bethel Bible Series.' Hal retired in 1994 to homes in both the West and East sides of Madison. Three years ago, he started a new life of retirement at Oakwood East Residential Retirement Community. Hal is survived by his wife, Virginia of Madison; two sons, John (Judy) Hueschen of Madison, and Dr. Richard Hueschen (Dr. Denise Despres) of Cedar Crest, N.M.; two grandchildren, Peter (Jamee) Hueschen of Ixonia, and Kathleen (Kerry) Wang of Waunakee; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Grace (Lloyd) Fiehler of St. Louis, Mo., and Lois (Art) Lange of Aurora, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. Hal was preceded in death by his parents, Erich and Ella Hueschen; and a brother, Robert Hueschen. Funeral services will be held at the OAKWOOD EAST CHAPEL, 5565 Tancho Drive, Madison, on Thursday, June 4, 2009, at 1 p.m. Pastor Laura Sutherland will officiate. A visitation will also be held at the OAKWOOD EAST CHAPEL on Thursday from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will conclude at the Walworth Cemetery in Walworth at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the Bethel Bible Series, 312 Wisconsin Ave., Madison, WI on Hal' s behalf.
