Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 3, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Strasburg, with the Rev. Leonard Eckroth officiating. Private family burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. There will be a prayer service held at 7 p.m. today at Myers Funeral Home, Linton. Eugene was born Jan. 24, 1928, on a farm near Hague, the son of John and Barbara (Welder) Welk. He attended country school. Eugene served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1951. Eugene married Eugenia Schatz on Feb. 25, 1952, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Zeeland. Following their marriage, they lived and farmed on his parents' farm until 1985. Eugene also drove school bus for the Odessa School District. They moved into Strasburg where they have since resided. While living in Strasburg, he drove school bus and the VFW bus for Memorial Day. Eugene liked to help area farmers and also helped Mal Wynveen at Mal's Ag and Auto. He enjoyed farming and spending time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great-granddaughter. Eugene was a member of the Odessa School Board, St. Aloysius Church Council, Strasburg Lions Club and Hague Snowmobile Club. He is survived by his wife, Eugenia; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Allen Welk and Duane and Cindy Welk, all of Bismarck, and Timothy Welk, Edwards Air Force Base, Lancaster, Calif.; one daughter, Linda Welk Smestad, Bismarck; six grandchildren, Janelle Welk and her fiance, Craig Keller, Jessica Welk and her fiance, John Lincoln, Adam Welk, Matthew Welk, Kyle Bertsch and Kayla Bertsch; one great-granddaughter, Ashley Ann Keller; five brothers and nine sisters-in-law, Aloys and Monica Welk, Rapid City, S.D., Leo and Kay Welk, Fargo, Donnie and Toni Welk, Milwaukee, Francis and Ellen Welk, Milwaukee, Herman and Lorraine Welk, Morgan Hill, Calif., Rose Welk, Wishek, Liz Welk, Milwaukee, Jan Welk Green Bay, Wis., and Florence Welk, Gresham, Wis.; and two sisters, Sally Ibach, Linton, and Ann Fitzsimmons, Tampa Bay, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Carleen; four brothers, Clarence, Freddie, Joe and John; and two brothers-in-law, Bill Fitzsimmons and Aloys Ibach.
