Ray was born on September 27, 1918 in Caroline, WI. the son of J. Fred Gruenwald and Tillie Liebman Gruenwald Beyer. Ray married Ruth Gomoll on January 12, 1946, at Grace Lutheran Church in Oshkosh, WI. He attended the Evergreen Country School near Clintonville, WI; the Clintonville Public School and the Caroline Public School. He worked for the Star Bakery Company of Marion and then as a traveling magazine salesman in southern Wisconsin. He enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps in July 1939. He served as the Mess Sergeant at the 2622nd Co. CCC Camp Delta, Drummond, WI. He worked at the Badger Lumber Company, the MacMillans Co. and the Grocery Co. all in Oshkosh. Ray was drafted into the United States Army in 1942. He trained at Fort Riley, KS. He served with the 826 Aviation Engineer Battalion, the 819th AEB, and then the 457th AAA AW Battalion. He was Honorably Discharged in 1945, his discharge papers list the following: battles and campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe; decorations and citations: European African Middle Eastern theater Ribbon with 4 Bronze Stars, 6 Overseas Service Bars, 1 service stripe, good conduct medal, Presidential unit citation and District Unit Badge GO HQ 9th Air Force. Ray was a member of the American Legion Post #0366 and a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10452 both of Princeton. Ray owned and operated Gruenwald Electric Compan! y in Princeton for about 20 years. He joined the Milwaukee Area International Brotherhood of Electric Workers, Local 494. Ray worked as a Construction Electrician in five different states. After he retired, Ray served as Zoning Administrator and Fire Marshall in the Princeton area. He enjoyed visiting grandchildren, watching and filming wildlife in his backyard and tracing the family genealogy. Ray is survived by his wife Ruth of Princeton; 3 sons Jon (Eva) Gruenwald of Salinas, CA; R Jay (Barbara) Gruenwald of Milwaukee, WI; Jac (Robin) Gruenwald of Ripon, WI; 1 daughter Jan (Roy) Manweiler of Princeton, WI; 5 grandchildren Jordan, Joy, Jayson, Jared, Jeremy; 1 sister Grace Ristow of Oshkosh; 2 sisters-in-law Ann (Edwin) Gruenwald of Oshkosh, Helen (William) Fierke of Owatonna, MN; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and 3 sisters. A funeral service will take place on Thursday, April 26, at 1:30 P.M., from the Wachholz and Sons ! Funeral Home in Princeton with Rev. David Busker officiating. Burial w ill follow the service at the Weiser Cemetery in the Town of Princeton. There will be visitation from 11:00 A.M. until the time of the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, Ray requested donations to Agnesian Healthcare Hospice Hope.
