Ebert Rembert (Ray) A. Ebert, Colonel, USAF (ret.) left this earth on Saturday, March 11, 2006. He was born March 16, 1918 in Boyd, Wisconsin to Charles and Annie Ebert. His early years were spent in Gresham Wisconsin where his family were cheesemakers. On December 12, 1942 Ray married the former Myra Stoehr of Gresham WI, in Santa Ana, CA. He is survived by his wife, Myra and five children: Eve LaTulipe and husband Bill in Austin TX; Kathy Littlefield and husband Richard of New Braunfels, TX; Karl Matthew Ebert and wife Gwynne of Madison, AL; Jill Edwards and husband Jim of New Braunfels, TX; Joseph Ebert, serving in the US Army in Afghanistan, from Pipecreek, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Timothy Vincent Ebert. Grandchildren include Scott LaTulipe, Erica Littlefield, Jessica Edwards, Jay Edwards, Jordan Edwards, Jimmy Ebert, Travis Ebert, Karl Nicolas Ebert and Anton Ebert. In January 1942, Ray enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He was enrol! led in flight training in Santa Ana, CA. After an injury, he was reassigned as a Bombardier at Kirtland Army Air Field, Albuquerque, NM. Dual rating as a Navigator/Bombardier was awarded upon graduation from the AAF Navigation School in San Marcos, TX. In the Pacific Theatre of World War II, Ray was in the first Air Echelon, flying B-29's, assigned to Saipan in October 1944 with the 871st Squadron, 497th Bomb Group, 73rd Bomb Wing (Very Heavy). His crew participated in the initial bombing runs over Tokyo, Japan. This crew was designated "lead crew" in March 1945 and completed their combat tour in June 1945. The crew completed 33 combat missions and 457 combat hours. After the war, assignments included: Kadena AFB Okinawa; Carswell AFB, TX; Matagorda Island Bombing and Gunnery Range, TX; Wurtsmith AFB, MI; Offutt AFB, NE; Albrook AFB Panama Canal Zone; and Lackland AFB, TX. Positions included command and staff positions at the Division and Major Command Level. Ray retired wi! th 30 years of continuous active duty in the United States Air Force o n June 30, 1972. During his career, he was awarded many distinguished combat decorations and meritorious awards. After his military service, Ray spent 20 successful years in the automobile business at North Park Lincoln Mercury in San Antonio, TX and Bluebonnet Motors in New Braunfels, TX. He served 25 years as Director, and recently as Chairman, of the 73rd Bomb Wing Association. He was a member of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre; a faithful parishioner at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and a member of the New Braunfels Kiwanis Club. Favorite pastimes were golf, traveling and celebrations with friends and family. Funeral arrangements have been made with Doeppenschmidt's Funeral Home in New Braunfels, TX. Throughout his life, Ray had a strong sense of self-reliance and honesty. There was a thread of pride in all that Ray accomplished for his family and his beloved country and so little clamor for attention in the milestones of his life. Visitation will begin at 4:00 PM! Tuesday and will continue until 8:00 PM at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home. A rosary will be recited at 9:30 AM Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church with the funeral mass following at 10:00 AM. Interment with full military honors will follow at Saints Peter & Paul Cemetery.
